error downloading codec??

Well, a codec is something used by the program to play movies, music, etc. To play DivX movies, you need the DivX codec. Windows Media Player is trying to download a video codec it needs to play movies but is having trouble. Try disabling any antivirus software as they can sometimes interfere with downloads. The same goes for download managers like Get Right and DAP.

I've gotten that same exact message when I'm trying to watch a video too.

I'm still trying to figure out how to solve the issue, (cus I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers.) but what I've learned so far is that Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required codec is not available for download from Microsoft.

Evidently a MPEG2 Decoder is necessary for certain file types. I've found where you can DL one, but there is a fee attached to it.

You can find it here.

I beleive that the Power DVD SE for Windows XP is what is needed, but I'm not exactly sure as I haven't tried it yet.

I'm trying to see if there is a free one out there anywhere.

It will solve all your problems.

It will solve some of your problems but not all. I have the Divx codec installed and it will allow you to view .DivX , .avi coded videos, but I still can't view some other types of files.

The latest file type that I've had an issue with was:

SVCD-X.streem.mpg

Boom.

Where can I download Power DVD? I had it but when I got my Windows reinstalled it was not there anymore.
