I just did some searching and was surprised I couldn't find a STi versus Evo thread. I've been driving early versions of both cars in GT4 (basically '94 Evo and a '94 STi sedans, as well as a version II '95 Sti and a '95 Evo II).

My impressions are:

The early Evos understeer horribly on pavement till you extensively modify them with a VCD unit and clever suspension settings.

But Evos are easier to drive off-road with very little tuning (no VCD, suspension settings can vary more). These '94 early Evos can be thrown sideways into corners of all kind off-road, but will pull out of them reliably with a bit of throttle.

The early STis on the other hand, are more oversteery. On pavement, this is absolutely great. You can go into a corner, braking hard. Release those brakes, and the rear-end starts to skate sideways slightly. Hit the gas, and the car balances (or understeers just slightly) but exits with much less understeer than an Evo from this time-period.

Off-roading isn't so great. I've noticed the STi oversteers too much. You can't just enter a corner in a full slide as you can with an Evo, chances are the car might just spin. With the STi, I also noticed (in GT4) that I had to equip a 2-way differential to get rid of some of this oversteer off-road. But the car still wants to get too sideways...to tame this, throttle must be applied slightly throughout the corner. You have to be a lot more careful with an STi off-road.

So my question: what are your impressions of these cars in GT2? I'm talking about the early cars (no later than a Version III STi or an Evo III). My memory of these cars in GT2 isn't so sharp. :guilty:

I loved the Impreza in GT2. Its the only car on the game that sounds EXACTLY like it does in real life, even when fully tuned.

The evo's were good but there was actually a surprising amount of understeer and it is one huge killjoy when you get that on 70% of the corners on each track. Having said that, you cant possibly drive the EVO the same way as you drive the Impreza, with the Subaru its literally a fingertip car, you get the feeling you could drive it with 3 fingers, whereas with the evo, youve got to reach down there and grab it by the wedding vegetables!!! Show the EVO who's in charge and you get a much more positive response, after all, its a much closer dissident of its rallying counterpart than the Impreza is.

ha! Wedding vegetables! funny.

But what about dirt versus pavement? Do you prefer one car over the other? that's what I'm really after here. I'll be driving both cars in GT2 in a few hours so I can vote in my own poll for each car!

EDIT: I'm surprised. Both cars feel similar enough in GT2 so that I wound up voting they're both the same. I mean, the Evo understeers slightly more than the Sti on pavement. And the STi has the ability to get slightly more sideways (oversteer), but both cars haven't got enough variation between one another for me to vote heavily in favor of each one for on and off-road

On-Road:Impreza STi.
The ver.III is my main gun in Pacific GP & other special events.
Very-very fast on the right hand,PLUS i'm too lazy to wait for 22B.
Off-Road:Lancer EVO.
Once i use my favourite, the EVO IV to face EVO V WRC & EVO VI WRC & win less than quarter second & full of fun.
Easy to control on dirt without much tuning, mind you.

So to answer properly, id prefer the Impreza on road, but the EVO off road.

I remember the first time i drove the 22B, i gave it 500 bhp and distinctly remebered being amazed as to how well it handled on the road, especially in the musclecar championship in seattle.

Reverse here; Evo on the road, STi off road. Funny that all of you said Evos understeer more on pavement than STis. With Evos I could drift them whenever I liked without much effort. The STi, on the other hand, requires a lot of effort just to turn its nose.

Off road though, the Evo feels bulky and less manuverable, especially around twisties like the Tahiti Maze. It also oversteers a bit for my liking. The Subie just feels more planted, although the understeer is still there.

Of course, this is all just my experience from driving both of these cars in fully-tuned form and their rally cars. I rarely drive in their stock forms and things might be different when they're stock so take what I said with a pinch of salt.

BTW, is there an Evo I? I only ever recalled seeing an Evo II as the oldest Evo.

There's no Evolution "I" in GT2; there is one in GT4's used lot.

I prefer most of the Imprezas on-road and off-road in GT2, compared to the Evolutions. I also prefer building up the road cars over using the "Special" Rally Cars, since you seem to get a little more handling flexibility out of them, for some reason. Sometimes you get a powerful and lighter car out of it, too.

I will make an singular exception for the '99 Evolution VI Rally Car, since it works well in both Rally and Road courses; I've had no trouble winning the GT All-Stars and GT World Championship with that car.

Trouble is, it's a lonely stepchild of a car to win; everyone wants the Cerbera LM instead.

Hey,nice to see you again Pupik.Where have you been?

if you want to know more about the difference between Lancer & Impreza, try run it stock just like the people from TopGear.
Results may vary.

One more plus side to the Evo is that it got a Yaw Controller. Although I admit it doesn't really help much it's still a pretty nifty feature 👍.

@ blazing escudo: Yup, I know the best comparison between cars should be done when they're stock, it's just that I don't have the time nowadays to test out cars. When I play it's only for online competitions, and I certainly don't drive stock cars when I'm competing for best times.

I have driven stock Imprezas & Evos a lot in GT1 though, but since the physics of the 2 games are so different my comparison would be useless. In GT1 the Impreza wins easily over the Evo, it handles like its on rails.

Actually, I came to the conclusion that in GT2, there isn't nearly as much difference between Evo and Sti, so I voted "they drive the same" or whatever. I can take either car on or off-road.

In GT4, there is a huge difference, tho! At least in the early cars.

YES you're right, Pupik, there is no Evo 1 in GT2....my bad. :nervous: Hey, when are you gonna make a GT4 spot? Your site is so much quicker and easier to use than gamefaqs.
