I just did some searching and was surprised I couldn't find a STi versus Evo thread. I've been driving early versions of both cars in GT4 (basically '94 Evo and a '94 STi sedans, as well as a version II '95 Sti and a '95 Evo II).
My impressions are:
The early Evos understeer horribly on pavement till you extensively modify them with a VCD unit and clever suspension settings.
But Evos are easier to drive off-road with very little tuning (no VCD, suspension settings can vary more). These '94 early Evos can be thrown sideways into corners of all kind off-road, but will pull out of them reliably with a bit of throttle.
The early STis on the other hand, are more oversteery. On pavement, this is absolutely great. You can go into a corner, braking hard. Release those brakes, and the rear-end starts to skate sideways slightly. Hit the gas, and the car balances (or understeers just slightly) but exits with much less understeer than an Evo from this time-period.
Off-roading isn't so great. I've noticed the STi oversteers too much. You can't just enter a corner in a full slide as you can with an Evo, chances are the car might just spin. With the STi, I also noticed (in GT4) that I had to equip a 2-way differential to get rid of some of this oversteer off-road. But the car still wants to get too sideways...to tame this, throttle must be applied slightly throughout the corner. You have to be a lot more careful with an STi off-road.
So my question: what are your impressions of these cars in GT2? I'm talking about the early cars (no later than a Version III STi or an Evo III). My memory of these cars in GT2 isn't so sharp.
