I stumbled across this program called f.lux. I find if quite fascinating. Now what is f.lux? Well, let me explain.

It makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again. Tell f.lux what kind of lighting you have, and where you live. Then forget about it. f.lux will do the rest, automatically.

How much blue light does f.lux remove?

My thought:
I installed this yesterday to try it out, since i stumbled on it, eventually my eyes got used to the contrast. When i disabled flux.. "Holy Cow this is bright, i was really surprised at the difference of color". I felt like my eyes had less strain when the night went on, i went to bed around 3:30am. Usually i toss and turn for a couple hours. But for some reason i fell asleep super quickly. Which is surprising since i don't fall asleep quickly. As-well as im running 9.3 Beta on my IOS Device and it has Night Shift, basically same thing as f.lux, but apple version.

You should try it. :)

Looks interesting. There is an open source spinoff called redshift for those who, like myself, are leery of installing arbitrary code on our machines without access to the source code. I might give that a spin.

EDIT: Actually there are a number of alternatives.

I've been using F.lux on my iPad air and I think it's very useful, it makes late night use easier with less bright lights in your face. I see apple are adding "Night Shift" for ios 9.3 which I'm guessing is essentially the same... I wonder why the idea came from?

Just started using it earlier today, thanks to this thread. My first hour of using it can only be described with

But now, I actually quite the coloring it produces. I think I might use it regularly, it really does strain your eyes less. I hope it helps me to fall asleep faster, too - many studies have shown that exposure to blue light can "bar" you from falling asleep.

Is there a way to get this on iPad without jailbreak? I don't need it as much on my computer because I rarely use it at night, but the iPad is wayyyy to bright even at minimum brightness.

You can update to IOS9.3 beta :). Night Shift is implemented. Basically F.lux but Apple Version.

Ah sweet 👍 I think I'll wait for the full release though. My past experience with beta softwares haven't really been great

Actually I'm running 9.3Beta 4 currently, and it feels a lot less sluggish then 9.2 imo.

Thing is, I use my iPad regularly for work, so I'd rather not take chances bricking it if it doesn't have any problems in the first place. I can wait a few more weeks for Night Shift :)

Whats your update on using f.lux?

It's fantastic. 👍 Not only is it easier for me to look at the screen, but falling asleep has also been way easier for me in the past few days, which is a huge bonus for me. I'll definitely stick to using it. I also love that the screen perfectly fits to the time of day - trying the 24h preview out at noon (for example) does make the nighttime setting look less appealing than it actually is.

For anyone not wanting to root their Android device there are other free options in the google play store. I've started using Twilight myself about 3 days ago, because of this post.
While to soon to give a final thought, it does appear to work. I have a tendency to binge on YouTube videos before bed. That has a tendency to make it harder to fall asleep. But I've not struggled with it these past few nights. I don't feel quite as stir crazy after putting the phone down. At first the red hue kinda threw me off, but very quickly I stopped noticing it. Neat app idea for those that use their devices just before bed.

While I can see it's uses for some, those of us that have gone to the trouble of calibrating your monitor I don't see any benefit.

I tend to edit photos in the evening because it's easier to control the ambient light and the last thing I would want is a program interfering with any monitor settings, especially white balance.

Is it easy to disable at any time?

Yes! Very easy! I think the shortcut key is ALT+DEL, even so its on the task bar, and you can right click and disable it :)

Ah, very good.
Thanks guys I'll check it out then especially if it can be automatically disabled for certain programs. 👍

This would be great for my partner who uses her phone late into the night.

I'll wait for beta 9.3 and night shift though.

I just installed this a couple days ago after being a stubborn non-believer all these years. My eyes have been getting really insanely bloodshot recently. I never felt like I had eye strain but my eyes were always burning. Anyway, this seems to have significantly helped. I can sit in front of my screen at night for a few hours and my eyes are nowhere near as red when I go check in the bathroom, etc. Guess I'll keep it installed.

I use Pangolin Screen Brightness on my desktop.
I have a tendency to stay upto 2am and staring at a monitor all the time is not making it any better, making my monitor dimmer at night will help me fall a sleep sooner.
Running at 20% ATM

I am trying out f.lux and I hate how my eyes are perceiving the mouse pointer has a very cool white(maybe about 7000K) when F.lux is running at 3000K at night.

But I am currently running it in "Darkroom Mode" and what thing that is confusing the hell out of me is why is it that every time I blink I see the screen in grayscale.
