I think it's safe to say racing esports are on the up-and-up! The GT streams were hovering around 10k concurrent viewers on YouTube at times over the two days, and the Forza RC stuff right now is sitting at 16k. With the FIA NA and World events still to come, I expect even higher viewership for those. That's bigger than what the genre was managing last year — and I haven't even kept track of what sort of numbers F1 is probably pulling in.

What a great time to be into racing games. :D

Wow, Ferrari boss singling out GT as a competitor to F1.

Maurizio Arrivabene: F1 must fight for attention in 'PlayStation' era

Great job by everyone involved, can see it only getting bigger and better. 👍

This should have been known a decade ago when GT helped the popularity of certain cars overseas. Kids love videogames, not so much motorsport. However they can grow to like/learn motorsport from playing motorsport racing games. Makes these exclusive licenses even more silly.

I've received confirmation that the Manufacturers World Finals will indeed be a 1 day event, a bit disappointing honestly but hopefully we still get a good 4 or 5 hours on stream, looking forward to it nevertheless, we know we won't get stuck in N class cars at least

The World Finals invites already went out to the Asian Manufacturer finalists ;)

Edit: deleted (because I read falsly that both cups are in 1 day, but its only Manu :))

I have lots of criticisms related to the game itself (Tire model, BoP balance, penalty system, dailies, small game design decisions, etc) but I have also to recognize how amazing it is for PD, Kaz and Sony to make these events for all of us. I know they're not the firsts doing it, but if this is how they start, I look forward to what we'll see next year and in the future.

Everyone and everything involved in the live events seem to be doing an amazing work (even with some complains about stewards' decisions and car selection methods) and as someone who's been playing GT since 1998 and into cars since I can remember liking something, I have to agree with @SlipZtrEm. What a great time to be into racing games in general, and GT in particular.

Looking forward to Las Vegas and World's.

Maybe I'll try to compete in next year's FIA seasons. I could have been there this year... Unfortunately got a tendinitis and a wrist injury in January and that put me off the wheel until this Summer.

Just sat and watched this and great show once again.

I get the console is limited to what we can watch at one time but there's not enough cameras to capture all of the action. We hear from the commentators when something happens on track but nearly always miss it.

There's only 10 people on track so they could possibly split screen for a short time to show us other battles/incidents etc. No idea if that's possible with a live show though...

...or maybe share the replay? Give us an unadulterated view of the races.

Only been able to watch the replay of Saturday's stream, the repechage races were so good. I think by now we've all realised Gr. B races should be treated like rallycross races where contact is inevitable and allowed. It really did look like a GRC race just without the dirt.

I've seen bits and pieces related to Sunday. The only positive thing to come out of the whole picking balls situation is they were picking pairs of cars for the first two races. I tend to agree when we all say that at least there isn't really that much on the line as the world final spots are already confirmed. However they are still playing for trophies and a smartwatch which is something. Congratulations to @TRL LIGHTNING for the sweep on Sunday and everyone that made it to the world's.

Shame @Tom won't be commentating any more GT events this year, but I met Chris at the Tokyo event and he's probably the most likely to fill Tom's shoes and will do an awesome job if he gets it.

Edit: I also wish we had heart rate monitors at Tokyo. I had my fitbit under my racing gloves and peaked at 148 BPM. In comparison, I did a half marathon the following weekend and was in the 160s, peaking at 173 so competitive sim racing is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Kinda huge, could be its own thread!

I thought the "playstation era" comment was his generic comment about videogame racing, playstation was the first video game thing that came to his mind, but calling out Gran Turismo definetly makes it look like he knows what he's talking about...

Arrivabene has always been cool with the kids. I remember him dropping Game of Thrones references a couple of years back.

And he had a point. I didn't watch the F1 this weekend, but I watched the full coverage of this. I'm a bit surprised at the numbers watching the live stream - 7000 sounds like so few for such a lavish production. I hope it continues to grow and gets the budget it needs to put on such a great show in future.

Congratulations to TRL Lightning, he looked like the Schumacher of sim racing.

For those of you wondering about if the BoP system has been changed for the Gr3 race at Dragon trail seaside 2. When we were having our driverbriefing there i was asking him if they changed the BoP system for each class and the one doing the driver briefing with us, Toyo san, said that they only changed the BoP system for the N500 and for the GrB race. So as for the Gr3 race the BoP system was the same as we would be playing it at home.

Great show and some outstanding racing. Some aggressive driving, but still far better from what I've seen in the FORZA show, well meaning the parts the stupid FORZA cameras allowed me to see. Congrats to Lightning and other podium guys, you really showed your class, well deserved.

Really thought Zoky should have been in the Final and would have loved to see Tidgney up front with less punting him.

The big thing right now is marketing,The Nurburgring event for example, had videos promoting on Playstation's youtube channel and the whole event has 70k viewers on youtube, not a bad start but every event after that had no marketing backed up by Sony it's always only on Gran Turismo channels and a retweet here and there from playstation, they need to step their game up because the events are already amazing.

I’ll probably sound like a downer, but with millions of games sold, 33 thousand current YouTube views for the Europe championship is kind of pathetic for the amount of time and energy spent on these events. I would expect the viewership to be 10 times that.

As far as the North America event, when was it announced? I’m on these message boards daily, check the PD website frequently and heard about this last week. I was just in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and could have easily scheduled my plans around visiting this event. Oh well

These things won't go viral over one day,Forza is doing their E-sports championship since 2016 and they still don't get much views, they are growing slowly, harder to make people interested in racing events than other E-Sports titles.

Take League of Legends.

"The most recent figures show that League of Legends has an active player base of over 80 million monthly players. Or over 27 million players every single day."

Last year, roughly 80 million watched their semi finals.

So, the proportions of views/monthly users are roughly the same (I'm only taking into account GT players who play sport mode, not those who play actively on lobbies or do other stuff in the game because people who play Sport Mode are more likely to be interested in the live events, I guess). You get as many views as you have monthly users.

And we're comparing one of, if not the biggest eSports event / game, which has been holding these championships for several years to GTSport, a 1 year game on its first eSports event and...wait for it... No sponsorships, no TV adds, no professional teams and no prizes involved.

It looks pretty good from my POV.

Keeping in mind that FORZA has primarily "market" the FRC World Finals for viewing on twitch, mixer and their FRC channel, I would say the views on You Tube aint too bad. Same applies for the Moto GP esports finals in 2017 who had close to 140k views at that time just on You Tube. BUT they're in e-sports for some time now. For GTS entering a new world of e-sports, they did good. Better marketing and perhaps [better] prizes will most certainly bring the racing genre forward. And don't underestimate the role that the top guys can play in this [marketing].

Tom and Jimmy in the commentary booth.

If the French, Spaniards, Italians and Germans can go nuts for their own boys couldn't you manage even a very slight hint of bias towards ours? :D

The events and the presentation of them continues to improve, they are genuinely compelling viewing.

Congrats to all the finalists, the 10 who made worlds and the 3 podium places.

I do hope the world's will be all single car races.

Congrats TRL_Lighting for the overall win and congrats to all 10 going to worlds!

Good show, but repecharge race 1 took the cake, wild race.

I have a few complaints about the production, as usual. This production seemed rushed or lazy or something. Is it just me or did they not show any replays at all during the race? I mean we had several incidents that took out competitors and served penalties to others and we didn't see them.

And then of course something I always feared would happen happened. In the Alsace race we had a group of 4 or so racers all in the mix to grab P2 going into the final 2 turns, "oh let's cut camera to watch Lightning cross the finish line, he's only been leading by 8 seconds the whole race." I know Broadbent said something and they cut back right away but the damage was done, it jumped back in as they were going through the final turn, by the time your brain scans things over and evaluates the current situation it's all over. Grady spinning out didn't help either, my brain nearly exploded trying to figure out what was going on! This again brings me back to the lazy production point. I mean that was a wild finish and we missed it, when we did get a replay it was the same thing we saw live. Call me crazy but I remember in other broadcasts of seeing different angles and even some slow mo. Maybe my memories are fuzzy about previous broadcasts but something seemed off about this one.

Just a few criticisms, I don't mean to sound ungrateful or a salty fan and I certainly am not. I thoroughly enjoy the broadcasts overall and am extremely happy they do them. I make criticism in hopes the right people see them and can make changes to make a good thing even better! I can only guess here but my thoughts is that there was a lack of communication between the production team and the broadcasters. If it's possible, to squeeze more replays in maybe they can do PiP replays so we can watch basically every minor incident while still keeping a eye on the live action. They already have a lot of PiP and frankly I'm more interested in seeing more of the racing action and less of the actual driver grinding his teeth staring at the screen with his "gamer face".

Congratulations to everybody that participate on the regional finals, especially to the ones going to the Worlds and even especially to @TRL_LIGHTNING (what a performance... from beggining to the end... untouchable...)

I just have to suggestions for the next few events:
- Better BOP or One make races (especialy on those lower classes, ou even GR4 that we haven't seen in any of those events)
- Longer races (20 laps seems to me the ideal number of laps (of course depending on the circuit) but if you think of a circuit of 1'30'' lap time, we would get like a 30mins race, which would help everything, in my opinion.

Can't wait for next week to watch the America's final......

Cheers.

That was hilarious,Jimmy went crazy and started shouting to go back to the other cars lol,but yeah it's kinda pointless to show Lightning in these races he's always so far ahead, sorry @TRL_LIGHTNING you're just to good for the broadcasts.

Sorry if this has been Asked before...

Does anyone know, If they are Allowed to Tune the cars ( of course BOP is set ) , or do they Drive them in Stock fashion with BOP set?

What driving Aids are allowed if Any?
ABS?

In some of the video, It looked Like some cars were locking up the brakes, so I wondered if ABS was not Allowed?

We were only allowed to use Abs on default as everything else had to set to off. As for the setups we were running with stock settings
