In development at France-based Asobo Studios, FUEL is set in an "alternate present" where the earth has been decimated by the effects of climate change. With oil sparse and expensive, people take to the wastelands and use their "grungy home-tuned vehicles" in competitions to win fuel.

Codemasters promises "the largest environment ever created in race gaming", a seamless "no-boundaries playfield" covering over 5,000 square miles. You'll be able to traverse this gameworld, made up of various mountain, forest and desert environments, using a variety of two- and four-wheel vehicles.

Interview/Trailer.

As someone who failed to comprehend why everyone and their mother seems to think GRID is apparently one of the worst games ever, I'm sure this will be quite polarizing. I think it could be a good game if they do it more TDU style then Burnout: Paradise style, though I think the Mad Max retread crap is total BS unless it comes packaged with a game that allows you to mount machine guns to your car.

Sounds interesting, and at least the crappy physics engine will be more suited to a random, free-roaming style game. Actually sounds like it could be really good fun, the environments look good in that trailer, the concept is an interesting one, could be a really good bash-about.

And this coming from someone who dislikes GRID.

Same here.

I do hope there will be customizing options for the cars/trucks.
And also curious about the unpredictability of the weather system.
If you would restart a race and a tornado passes at the exact same spot as the last time, it wouldn't be really exciting.

Looks like a free roaming take on Motorstorm. Imagine if they made a Twisted Metal game like this .

The premise is good, we'll have to wait and see on the execution though. the area is huge, I worked it out as almost 120km in each direction, at 120km and hour average speed it woud take an hour to cross the map. It's roughly 79 miles across in each direction, that's a wee bit bigger than Test Drive's island I think.

lol, oil crisis
sounds like something in the near future... :P
hope they will have a demo up
the grid demo saved me 60 bucks (friend told me to try it saying it was a great sim, tried it, stood up, yelled in fury, threw controller at the wall, and proceeded to uninstall the demo)

Wow that looks fun. i really like the fact of the big weather changes, and unlimited area of driving.
I'm expected 100+ Players in a multiplayer game, where u can create checkpoint races ala TDU with up to 16players.

Looking forward

Chris

As DustDriver mentioned earlier there needs to be complete customisation of the vehicles - I expect there will be but the fun and variability of the game hinges on stuff like this.

Hmm.. yeah, FUEL > Motorstorm

Anyway, I have to be more calm this time after GRiD kinda failed after all. :dunce:

This isn't so much my kinda game, but it does look way more interesting than Motorstorm in terms of WANTING to play it and HAVE FUN while playing it.

Hopefully this game will be compatible with a wheel. MotorStorm2 isn't, FlatOut2 isn't which are also racing games.

In the trailer, they said that you can go anywhere you want at any time and that is hasn't been done in any game before. This is not true!

They probably never heard of 1nsane developed by Invictus, published in 2001 by codemasters. The game field probably isn't as big as FUEL but 1nsane is also a free-roaming game without any invisible walls and you can drive everywhere you want, everytime. There is even a "free roam" game mode in 1nsane.

FUEL seems like a game to look out for. I'm very interested in games like 1nsane, MotorStorm and I'm very interested in FUEL. Graphics are great, it's available for the PS3, now let's hope it's compatible with a wheel.

1NSANE is a excellent game I loved it, one of my favourite games for me to ever purchase from the bargain bin. I hope this game can follow on from that in stunning style!

I remember this was the game where the devs said the 360 version is going to be graphically dumbed down to fit it all on one DVD and operate without a given HDD. A bonus for PS3 then with blu ray, hopefully if it doesnt suck.... makes you wonder how much more they could have done if it wasnt multiplatform.

Just a little more official info, from Codemasters' site:

Codemasters
Set to revolutionise multi-terrain racing with the largest environment ever created in race gaming, FUEL will present players with an astonishing no-boundaries playfield that's over 5,000 square miles (14,000+ km²) in size. Creating the ultimate competitive go-anywhere racing experience, FUEL will have players competing across wildly different terrain and executing spectacular death-defying stunts as they race dozens of varied two and four-wheeled rides and explore this epic world on an unprecedented scale.

FUEL is set in an alternate present in which whole swathes of the globe have been ravaged by the effects of climate change brought on by decades of environmental abuse. Here oil prices have rocketed and yet a new breed of racing junkie takes to the wastelands, pitting their grungy home-tuned vehicles against each other in an all-new extreme sport as they compete to win fuel supplies. To triumph means travelling the wastelands to challenge the best; from the tsunami-wrecked pacific coast through the Nevada wastelands, including the Grand Canyon, up treacherous snow-capped mountains, thick forests, arid deserts, abandoned lakeside resorts and much more.

Bringing this vast, open ended landscape to life is a dynamic weather system with full day and night transitions, brilliant sunshine, torrential rain and everything in between, plus destructive tornados, sandstorms, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and blizzards requiring mid-race strategy changes. Complete with the ability to go online to explore this massive world and compete in hundreds of multiplayer challenges, FUEL is coming in 2009 for the PLAYSTATION®3 system, Xbox 360 and Games For Windows.

Looks like fun. I want it now. After they screwed up GRID, I think they might have actually gotten this one right.
I don't know who you mean by "they" but don't forget, GRID is developed by Codemasters and FUEL will only be published by Codemasters.

Asobo studios are the developers.

Release date: december 31 2009.

They probably know this also, but not everyone knows this, especially teenagers who only started playing games a couple of years ago.
These are pure commercial statements.

And I also hope they implement steering wheel support.
But hopefully not completely the same as grid.

What I do hope is that you can upgrade (internal/external) and paint the vehicles.

Expanding on this, would be great if you could do it virtually piece by piece - pick from hundreds of possible chassis, choose different wheels and tyres, dozens of different engines, exhausts, suspension etc, paint them all different colours, give them logos and so on. We want full customisation!

Open world version of MotorStorm... Fuel could turn out to be a lot of fun! 👍

GameTrailers has a nice collection of videos for it, most of which are available in HD as well.

As said, I really do hope Fuel supports steering wheels (particularly G25), can anyone confirm this, I don't expect a sim like use (it is still an Arcade type racer afterall) but no wheel means no no purchase for me??

Both the Motorstorms were good, but I traded them in becuase they didn't support the wheel, and too much emphasis was put on boosting, and I hear that there is no boosting Fuel which is a good thing.

So this game comes out in 7 days? Anyone else excited. Pretty cool to know that this game is in the Guinness Book of Records for biggest playable area in a game!
