Just a quick explanation here. After the first hour of testing/wrecking, I decided to give this test a different approach. I found that going full boar did more harm than good, so it got me thinking...how would I go about racing people on this track? There's not too many passing opportunities and one wheel in the grass can spell big trouble. Answer is simple, being smooth, consistent, and steady. These times listed aren't going to set any track records, I'll admit, but I think they represent a good pace. And if anyone disagrees with my philosophy, "Bite Me" I'm sorry, that's not me, that's Death Mountain talking!:D But in all seriousness, great job to all of the tuners and thank you, all of you guys are both amazing and mental at the same time.

Car was pretty good, snug then loose on exit. The only major issue I had was that it seemed to actually launch itself off of the hill and was a handful when it landed. It might think it's an airplane!

Having the spoiler gave it excellent braking, and the little snug through center. But this car was wrecking loose to me. I had a very hard time controlling the rear end almost everywhere....backing out early and focusing on the rear slowed my time. One nice advantage to the spoiler was it didn't fly out of control on hill, and a steady landing.

This setup with the spoiler gave the same characteristics (great brakes/snug in the center) but the rear end was kept in check a little better. I didn't have to worry about it sliding on me so much. A shame that some power had to be sacrificed.

The rear can get away from you a little bit, but with some steady tapping of the throttle, I was quicker. The only reason I can think of for the slower time is the gearbox/High Turbo doesn't work for my nintendo setup, but going just that little bit slower gave me that extra time to set myself up for the next corner. (Not a good time/but a smooth ride)

This car can get you into trouble. It's a sleeper...you are cruising along so smoothly that you don't realize you took the last turn 3-4mph faster than usual and end up missing your mark on the next bend. A very comfortable car with the gearbox and Turbo that work well.

AHHHH! This car was so frustrating for me! The rear end had grip; it could tear your face off, it was ridiculous. Not sure how he does it! But to me the rear had so much grip and had the ability to save you if you started fishtailing, but the front was left to play catch up. Tight from apex to exit and I couldn't trust my turn in points because the nose would slide on me. I know this car can go faster (look at the time, it's not bad!!!)....it's me as a driver who is the limit and let the car down.

This is my favorite car(for this round), and for those who might be thinking I'm just saying it to be nice to our host, I'd say drive it! This car is great for cruising at a steady pace, or you can light it up and push it more and more with every lap if you have to. Only 2 small issues. I couldn't jump hard on the brakes (sometimes they felt non-existent) and was wondering about the top speed. Could probably do with another 3-4mph, it maxed out on me heading down the hill.

This car felt quick, like it was shot from a cannon. The rear would slide out on you, sometimes putting you into a 4 wheel drift, which on this track can lead to chaos. I want to take this tune to a different, more tolerable track, because I think this would be a great setup. Nice job!

Now that this is done, I've cleaned up my mess,(I couldn't find all the signs though) and I'm getting off this friggin' rock and will gladly kiss the flater grounds @ Silverstone.

thanks for driving my car as had already said when I posted my setup was a difference of + - 27 HP because of (flat floors), so it was not fair to take once the others had not, to benefit me, would have review the entire suspension, even so my congratulations, thank you.

same value compression and extension. around 4/4 or 5/5... Just to let the car moving freely over the springs to check how it react by himself. Toe also 0/0 .

Never thought of doing that with the springs, thank you for the tip on that.
 
After testing many tunes in depth over a few years it has become obvious to me the methodology some tuners follow. It becomes very clear whether someone tunes the springs or LSD first. If they adjust one part to perfection before moving on to another part. It has become blatantly clear (to me) that tuning for one effect is a dead end. Adjusting the part that is the most out of tune, then moving on to the next most out of tune part, and so on works best. Sure I'll have to revisit the spring rates three times and the LSD six or more times because adjusting one part effects others. But when someone takes one part and makes it 'perfect' while ignoring other out of tune adjustments it is like painting yourself into a corner.

Don't let a 'perfect' setting overcompensate for another settings deficiency. You'll only have two out of wack settings. I think of every setting having a bell curve, as I bring one setting closer to its peak 'ideal' number it will shine a light on other disparities. If I take that part too far, past 'ideal' into 'perfect' (overcompensating) then I'm missing out and will never know what I did wrong.

Springs are usually the first place I would start, bouncing between springs and LSD a few times till I get them fairly under control before I adjust anything else. Don't make the mistake of "first solution = best solution." If your car is oversteering, and you think its the springs, what if its really the toe? If you adjusted the springs and the oversteer disappears did you adjust the right thing? Nope. Chances are you took the springs too far and overcompensated for the bad toe. Just because one change works well doesn't mean another setting wouldn't work better. Experiment!

Above all keep notes. A lot of notes. Half my time tuning is spent either writing or re-reading my notes. I've saved many many more hours making the notes than I would have rehashing the same settings over and over. I learned more from my notes than any tuning guide on GTP (shock, gasp, the horror! Unfortunately, true.)

Drive the car, isolate the problem, make a prediction, adjust a part, test the car again, make notes on the changes the adjustment made. How does that differ from your prediction? Repeat.

If a tuner has a distinctive driving style then that style tends to distort any tunes that tuner makes. The more talented the tuner is at driving the less he'll tune to compensate for his incompetence at driving. The more problems a tuner has with a particular area of driving (braking, throttle control) the more his tunes will reflect that. But a driver can't reach his potential without understanding tuning, and a tuner can't reach his potential without understanding driving.

How many groups have you tested?
I think the testers got the short end of the stick in this contest, its a great turn out tuner wise, but that's a hell of a lot of cars to test no matter how you look at it lol
 
I'm only doing Apricot Hill. Some tracks get on my nerves and there's no way I can put a lot of laps on them. Monza, silverstone, brands hatch. Its like nails down a chalkboard. I'm glad my Aspergers is fairly mild or I'd be yelling like the old bartender on Boondocks Saints as I drive most tracks. :)
 
Thanks to all the testers.

I got my cars posted before the deadline but I never got around to tuning them beyond my initial settings. I spent too much time racing online putting off tuning for another day. I re-ran my Apricot Hill entry and found I posted the wrong spring rates also. Its my own fault but I made the decision not to withdraw my entries and posted them anyway. In hindsight I wish I had not posted these incomplete cars.:banghead:
 
I am a bit behind at linking some of the results. Sorry for that. I caught a cold and it has taken me down for the past four days. I should be able to link tonight and start my test driving.
 
Well, I guess my absence from GT occurred at the wrong time. I've gone and missed out on the great Mazda MX-5 shootout!:dunce:

It looks as though it was a great turnout. There are so many entries that the testers are doing an amazing amount of driving to fit such a large field of cars. I can't wait to see the large amount of data collected from testing. Great job Hami, tunas, and testers!:gtpflag: I'll try to be more active on the forum so that I'll be able to participate in the next FITT event!👍

Each car was initially given 8 clean laps. I thought I had adjusted to the track before testing and was comfortable with how to approach it, but after testing all the tunes there was a noticeable decrease in lap times as I drove the track more. I went back and gave every tune 5 more clean laps and there was an improvement on pretty much every tune and a very noticeable improvement on the first few tunes as far as lap time. So every car got 13 laps. This is my first time testing so I'm still learning.

***Special note: I drove automatic and with a handful of the tunes this had a significant effect on 1st sector times because I was not in the correct gear for the uphill. I don't fault the tuner and it didn't effect the DC score I gave. I pointed this out specifically with 2 of the tunes because It was an issue that occurred nearly every lap and led to lower lap times overall.

Comments that apply to all the tunes: I was really impressed with the stability and control on such a demanding track. I felt comfortable pushing all the cars and was really impressed with the control I had getting airborne and then landing for the blind left that led to the hard downhill braking part. Especially with my second round of testing the number or red laps, flips, and spinouts was very low. Really a great group of tunes all around.

Comments:Excellent grip to track and stable. Again, could stay full throttle and in control for some sections that required lift off on other tunes. Would slide on me and over rotate on the tight corners. Felt flat floor held this tune back. (had the issue of driving automatic and losing time because I wasn't in the gear I should have been in on the first uphill)

Comments:Solid tune. Stable and balanced. Slight understeer entering corner but great rotation mid and exiting corner. 6th gear could be a smidge longer, reached point where it stops accelerating a couple times.

Comments:Good stability overall and on the edges of the track. Felt quick but didn't translate to lap times. Oversteer and having to countersteer slowed me down at times. 6th gear needs to be longer, reached the point where it stops accelerating every lap.

Thanks. I definitely learned a lot. I know that it was probably an easier process when you could share cares in GT5, but I felt having to put in all the values for each tune and then driving it helped me learn more. It surprised me how different the setups could be and then how similar they felt, at least on this particular track.

One question for you all. I went to look how many miles I logged on the cars I used and it don't think it registered any of the miles I did for testing. I swear I drove these cars to death. I did the testing the way MCH said to. It just seems weird. Anyone have this?
 
Nice laps time you got there and surprised that you managed to get the quickest using my setup. I wasnt finished tuning with it but it looks like it might not need much more doing to it. Thanks @backnfourth

I noticed this when I tested for the American Classics Shootout, sometimes it logged the miles, sometimes it didn't.

I only ran across it once so far and it was because I didn't back out enough to the main screen to initiate the automatic save. I was switching set ups but never went further back than the track select screen.
 
With having this update coming tonight, how should we go about it with testers? Should they be allowed to update to it? I don't know and it is just a thought that came to my head.
