You mean the Lancer Super Rally Car?

Is it really worth 1,350,000? I've been curious...

from the eighth evolution, yes. Buy it, it makes mincemeat of the '03 subes even, loads of low end torque, exactly what you need in start/stop like yosemite 'n the canyon.đź’ˇ

1. - I think PD should stick to the pavement. I like rallying but not in this game, it's poorly done.
2. - Car damage would be better than penalties. Imagine knocking the wheel alignment off and having the DFP pull to the side for the rest of the race, losing downforce as you ruin your bumper, lowering the rev limiter to prevent overheating if you damage the radiator ....
3. - I'm going to cheat my way thru it using the Dodge.

I agree - there's no point in putting rallying in the game if you can't get it right. For a start, the cars don't get dirty or damaged, and the physics are quite terrible to be honest.

...yes I now hate the five second penalties with passion. I had a flawless lap up until the slight left hand curve on the 'Ring's long straight, hit the grass and lost it, slid into second got a five second penalty...finished Mission 34 0:00.198 behind...stupid penalties...

Just imagine what they could have down with the space freed up by axeing the rally...

More cars per race?

More shiny per car?

...better AI? Nah.

After numerous car changes and modifications as experiments I finally got the HARD GrandCanyon!!! It tested my nerves for sure but I made it without destroying my controller. I am now trying to finish all my missions and having difficulty with most of the ones you guys did also. I am reading posts and watching some of the vids for hints. The 5 second penalty's are really a pain, and sometimes not relevant to your impact.

Axing the rallying doesn't make the PS2 more powerful which they'd have needed to to do all of thoes things, barring the AI, I do believe they could have done a better job with the AI. but more car's per race would need either lower detail overall or more powerful hardware. All you'd do by removing the rallying is free up disk space of which there was plenty left anyway.

The space is already there, hint hint. To add more content to GT4 ie more car's or tracks wouldn't have needed ANYTHING to be taken out the game, GT4 used roughly 70% of the disk, I can't remember the exact figures but when checked it took up I think 6.something GB out of 9GB. The reason no more car's or tracks were added was time.

its worthless......lets hope its not in GT5. i think when a computer car hits you and puts you in the dirt or wall i think thats enough of a penalty! kills your speed!

Well I beat most of the rallys the proper way, but after losing GC Hard Reverse (I'd won forwards) a few times, I decided to try the wallriding method. Took all the stress right out! I went and got my Escudo, set the tranny to Automatic, and took off, running along the outside edge of every corner I could find. Some tracks it didn't help much (El Capitan), and some it helped immensely (Chamonix, and especially Tahiti...I won by half a lap). Yes, it's cheap, but I really don't care one tiny little bit, because I don't have perfect throttle control like the AI and can't accelerate just the right amount on every corner. So, screw it, I'll cheat. Besides, after beating M34 by more than 2 seconds, I feel I don't need to prove anything with the rallys :)

I never was crazy for the Rally race events, but I always finished them, and I always got gold for the Rally license tests. But, GT4 has made up my mind that I hope not another GT title features this type of racing. It sucks, and blows. I don't think I'm going to finish all the Rally races, which means no 100% finish for me for the first time in GT game title. Trust me, I'm no happy about it, but with such a horrible feature, there's nothing in me that wants to do something about it.

I really hate it when you drive and keep a straight line, the stupid AI bumps you, but you get the penalty. It's hard enough to beat the bastard as it is. Did PD really have to go and make it this hard, and ridiculous for us? This truly was a stupid mistake on their part.

Eh, thing is as long as it's not impossible, it'll exist. I agree the Hard ones are ridiculously hard...but keep at it and you'll do it, I did (and I'm probably one of the lower level skill GT4 players out there)

It deends how you hit the walls, if you slide into them arse first, you won't get the penalty.

I actually enjoy the rallies in GT4. Sure, at first I could not believe how hard it was, but once I got the hang of it, it got fun!

Just remember 3 things:
1. Fishtail corners if you can't slow down, so you hit the walls with your car's unpenalizable ass.
2. Wall-riding. It's usually faster than trying to slow down enough to avoid touching the walls, and can't get you a penalty easily.
3. Escort Rally car. I forget what rally you win it in, but it will clean the floor with everything, even the mighty Evo VII Rally, when tuned. Plus it's free, and thus saves you $1.35mil (That's too expensive for any rally car IMO) The Toyata RSC Rally Raid is also a good choice.

But, why is it, that to follow the CPU's driving line, you can't seem to go nearly as fast as he can without going way out to the walls?

I think you're just applying too much throttle, and initates wheelspin.

For those frustrated with rallys (dirt and ice) you really need a Driving Force Pro wheel. You will get much more control and enjoyment than you ever will from a DS2 controller.

The special stages part of the game is no longer fun. (Hard) ice tracks just make me want to throw my PS2 out the window. Not only having to do a very hard race, but avoid touching the corse or rival car with your front end is enough for me. Its TOTALY ruined the whole game for me, and pretty much means i wont be buying another GT game. I played GT 1, 2 and 3 to death, and played GT3 untill my playstation blew up. GT4 isnt anyware near that, more annoying than fun.

Anyone else lose hair over this stupid "5 second penalty"? Just when all is good, you clip a wall .... 5 second penalty, car hits YOU .... 5 second penalty. UGH!

I completely agree, i have one left to do in the special conditions section and it is chamonix Hard, and i really dont' want to do it. Why is it that when the other car hits YOU, they never get the penalty and have to slow down, also they always seem to take the perfect line and never slide too wide nomatter how fast they are going. I also have to agree and say that if it appears in GT5, i will have second thoughts about the game, irrespective how realistic it is.

No you won't. :sly:

Since GT5 will be on-line, you'll be second in line to buy it, right behind me.
Racing on-line will be where it's at and no-one here will want to miss THAT party!

Why is there a penalty in rallies when you hit a car or wall?
Why not in road races aswell, I find it pretty stupid anyway.
In real rallying the cars go one-by-one.
In GT5 it should be that you have to beat a specific time set by another car to win.

The only thing that annoys me about the penalties is that sometimes you can make a genuine mistake, say brake too late, leave the road into the sand and hit a wall. You think you've been punished enough by losing several seconds and having to make your way back onto the track, but you get a penalty for your trouble as well, making it twice as costly.

I agree with penalties for hitting cars though, accidental or otherwise. In a real race, if you hit a car from behind, even by accident, you'll probably damage at least one of the cars so there should be some consequence. I'd like to see it fixed so the AI gets penalties and you won't be penalised for them hitting you however.

The 5 sec. penalties are a pain in; more-so in situations such as Ice Arena reverse at hard difficulty. It is VERY difficult to make a pass, let alone a clean pass. But for that I just swung the ass of my Evo rally car around to nail the Impreza in it's front end, that way I don't get the penalty and the AI car is blocked. But you have to make sure you can keep up with him for the first 2 right-handers. Then you could try what I suggested above in the first left or the next right after that. But there's a tip for anyone to use; this is how I did it.

Generally speaking though, 5 second penalties are pretty easily avoided. You just have to know where the good spots for passing are, so you don't overshoot at the wrong spot and bump the AI with your front-end. For the Umbria rally, you have to know where the walls stick out, so you can avoid hitting them. But the bottomline is to practice until you're near perfect, depending on how many A-spec pts. you're looking for.

I hate the penalties. However there are a couple of places were you can benifit from raming the AI in a slow corner, take the 5 second penalty, and leave the AI in a ditch. If you do it in a slow corner you usually do not waste to much time. If you do it in the braking zone and keep hitting the AI you do not waste time and do not have additional penalties added while your original penalty counts down.
What I hate the most is the AI hits you in the side, while I maintain my line, and I cop the penalty. Also you can be stationary facing the wrong way and the AI takes no action to avoid you, it then hits you and you get the penalty.
Try following the AI car on the reverse narrow street track and watch it take a uphill corner full speed, hit the house about 6 feet up, land and then take off at full speed. Just stupid.
And I am still yet to win Grand Canyon hard with the Ram.

Yeah I know what you mean there. That's just plain stupid, but heck, I guess the AI has to have some kind of advantage over you by staying at full-throttle longer than you. But I think there is a certain way to do it in which you won't get the penalty. I do remember doing this once.

The 5 second penalty in GT4 is VERY annoying and those races are very hard to beat. I used a much faster car (well obviously). I would just hug the walls, this helped me a lot on the dirt tracks. And if your going to hit a wall, hit it with the rear/back of your car, you wont get penalized.
The only race I havent beat yet is the Grand Canyon. I think this race should be added on the racing missions, because its really a tough race to beat

:grumpy: The Grand Canyon is a really neat track once you learn it well enough. Just practice on it, normal and reverse.

But there's one piece of advice I'll give: if you're on Grand Canyon reverse, make sure that just before lift-off of the last hill on the longest straight, that you BRAKE and turn the car right. If you don't do this, you'll be screwed, and you'll dive nose-first into the barrier. I had to do this everytime on Grand Canyon Hard, since my car was faster than on the previous difficulties, and I think once I got a penalty for it, due to the fact that the tail of my car was all that touched the barricade and it swung the front end back around - just as the AI car was approaching.:grumpy:

I think I used the Toyota Rally Raid, the one that's won by doing the second special conditions race. I struggled on a couple of the races, however, so maybe there are better choices.

But those special conditions are some of easiest racing in the entire game. With the right vehicle and ice wall-riding (a definite dirty and underhanded driving method), you get so far ahead that you never see your opponent even in the rear mirror.

For the most part I didn't have to wall-ride, but just to get past an opponent it is a fine method.

A high, loosely sprung car with tires at high camber rates practically bites into the ice or dirt and gives decent traction for straights and turns.

Or whenever I just wanted to rush through to completion, I would just glide around the track hugging the wall with my eyes half-closed. You just need to decide your course of action. Hard way? Easy way?

Let your conscience be your guide.
