I've got no problem with people questioning facts, in an effort to improve their understanding.. but how mental must you be to be able to disregard the massive weight of scientific evidence against flat earth theories?!??! ...

Edit: I've got two words for them... explain, and.. gravity.

Well the whole earth is flat thing was plausible with gravity it just means we are on one side and for some reason it's pulling stuff down. We don't actually know why gravity pulls down to the center of the earth now as it is. However the whole earth is flat thing isn't even a discussion anymore since we have been to space and have seen that its a ball.

Not even just space... Anyone who has been on a plane, or seen a ship disappear at the horizon, or been to a salt flat, knows the Earth is round.

The fact there are people that think that photos of Earth from space are conspiracy hoaxes is completely ludicrous when you think about it.

Objects with a mass are attracted to each other, the greater the mass, the greater the attraction, this can be proven in the real world, not just by the use of theory and maths. If flat earth existed then everything would be attracted to the middle of it as that is where the mean maximum mass would be.

Edit: Anyone remember the film 'Dark City' from Alex Proyas, the director of 'the Crow'... this thread made me think of that.

Edit 2: I do recall reading a compelling argument as to why many 'earthrise' pictures may be fake, mostly related to the size of the earth, considering it's distance from the moon, and the shadow/position/orientation of the earth, but most of the images in question did not originate from NASA, most were Athena posters...

I think it is ridiculous too, but I would encourage people to use the links, particularly the YouTube video if they haven't already.
The theory goes against pretty much everything we have learnt in school, and the world around us, but just for fun try to have an open mind. :D

Nope, if someone tells me that 2+2=9 then, with an open mind, I'll say they are wrong. I believe that which can be proven, or not dis-proven. If there was anything to support flat-earthers claims then I would consider it... but there isn't, it's just "don't believe the government" type bull crap that is offensive to anybody with at least half a brain. Entertaining notions such as this does nothing but set back human knowledge.

I was surprised to learn today that there are thousands of educated people that still believe the earth is flat! Groups meet up with similar beliefs in numerous countries although they are mainly found in the USA and UK.
Thoughts?

Dear TankAss, great post.👍

I put this into the category of "'Consensual Delusions'; Benign Variety".

Similar to this are medievalists, New-Agers, Bigfoot hunters, and other well-behaved 'cults' (for want of a better term) which reject, in whole or in part, uncomfortable aspects of modernity. In some primal way, they are all deeply conservative.

Respectfully submitted,
Steve

Very interesting. This is the first time I heard such a theory, and the first that is the most oddest to me. I never knew such a simple problem can become such an epidemic and arise to conspiracies. But, alas, it is true. Earth itself has too many variations, and is scientifically impossible to close this case. So most people will resort to NASA, then flat-earthers was born.

Thanks for sharing this TankAss.

There is actually a flat earth society on the Internet. :P
I know I can't post a link to their forums because of suspect advertisement but you can search in Google (flat earth society).
I know how this seems so ridiculous, but I find it fascinating.
Its quite amazing how many different ideas there actually are out there. Another one is a hollow earth theory. It seems a bit more believable.

I bet they have trolls that show round earth theory.

Yeah it is quite an active community. I presume most don't actually 'believe' but there are some people who seem to be fairly intelligent who do.
I presumed most 'believers' were religious, but that was not the case. After some searching around most claim to be atheist or agnostic.
Don't worry folks, I'm not a member there. I'm staying with GTP (unlucky for you).

The modern age of the Flat Earth Society dates back to the early 1800s, when it was founded by Samuel Birley Rowbotham, an English inventor. Samuel Rowbotham's Flat Earth views were based largely on literal interpretation of Bible passages. His system, called Zetetic Astronomy, held that the earth is a flat disk centered at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth. After Rowbotham's death in 1884, followers of his Zetetic Astronomy founded the Universal Zetetic Society.

Flat Earth theory spread to the United States, largely in the town of Zion, Illinois where Christian Catholic Apostolic Church founder John Alexander Dowie and later Wilbur Glenn Voliva promoted Flat Earth theory. Voliva died in 1942 and the church quickly disintegrated. Flat Earthism remained in Zion, gradually becoming less popular into the 1950s.

The International Flat Earth Society was formally founded in 1956 by Samuel Shenton, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Geographic Society. Shenton died in 1971 and Charles K. Johnson became president of the International Flat Earth Society. Johnson actively and charistmatically promoted the Society and, over time, its membership increased to over 3,000. His wife Marjory took an active role in the Society as well, often contributing articles to the Flat Earth Society Newsletter.

In 1995, a fire destroyed the Johnson's home as well as all of the Flat Earth Society's library, archives and membership lists. Following a long period of poor health, Charles K. Johnson's wife Marjory Johnson passed away in 1996. He vowed to rebuild the society. Sadly, Charles K. Johnson passed away in 2001 at the age of 76, leaving the Society's future uncertain.

After several years of inactivity, the Flat Earth Society was resurrected in 2004 and remains active today at theflatearthsociety.org. The Society officially reopened to new members on 30th October 2009.

Having an open mind doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up your right to use it.

I live near a pretty nice mountain with a good wide view, and I've been up flying. Having actually seen the shape of the Earth myself, it'd be hard for me to disregard all empirical, observational data to believe in a fallacy.

Of course the Earth is hollow. It's just that the hollow part is filled with lots of gooey, hot magma. :D

Ya I was going to mention about how places like the prairies you can actually see the earth curve since its so flat and open. That one is sort of hard to dismiss.

And in the middle of all that is the hot glowing sphere of evil called the "core".

Illusion!

Only evidence I found of a flat earth is this.

That video is hilarious. First off all, it says space travel is a hoax, then it says only astronauts have seen the orbit. If space travel never happened then how do astronauts exist?
Also if there such literal bible followers than why do they believe in aliens?

When I was little and thought the earth was flat, I wondered to myself: "Wouldn't that mean that the water in ocean will just run off the side ultimately draining out all our water resources? If that was the case we would have lost all out water way before I was born." And like that, I knew the world couldn't have been flat. No joke.

Wouldn't be hard to do... you just have to construct the Earth as a hyper-plane, finite but unbounded. so that at the edges, it wraps around without having to be an actual sphere, so the water doesn't fall off the edge.

But to get the land to map right, you'd have to construct it something like this...

Dymaxion_map_unfolded.png

Then you'd have to warp space at all those edges to make them stick together. Should be a lot easier than making a hypersphere, which is what we'd need to be living inside a hollow Earth.

Of course, once you warp space enough to make that flat map work without distortion, your hyperplane starts to look a lot like what we extra-dimensional visitors from the 3rd dimension call a "sphere".

Then again... it's possible cartographers have been in on the "Round Earth" hoax for thousands of years. In which case, we'll have to map out the Earth ourselves...

Damnit... why are the levels and elevations on this surveying equipment constantly going off?!?

When you fly in transcontinental flights you can actually see the Earth's curvature over the ocean, not sure if relevant but is still significant.

I think the fact that you can see THE CURVATURE OF THE EARTH from certain places is a big giveaway.
