Actually the world is a flat, rotating disk carried on the backs of four huge elephants who in turn are standing on a giant turtle swimming through space.

I have a number of books backing me up on that claim.

I suppose the only way of proving the spherical nature of the earth to these people would be to show them footage from a camera mounted on a space shuttle taking off. They'd probably still insist it was an illusion.

Imagine if the earth was actually a flat disk, interesting seasonal changes! It would probably be similar to Uranus, which spins on it's back. 6 months of daylight, followed by six months of darkness!

The Flatists would take that remark and quote the North and South Poles back at you.

I would actually love to see footage like that, not because of proof, but because it would be cool.

They think that sustained flight is impossible, so there are supposedly no satellites...
So gentlemen, the earth as we know it is in fact... a giant frisbee. :D

I love the way that their 'evidence' is non-existent, and all scientific evidence seems to back up a spherical earth...

Just a quick note - this is why non-scientists see the word "theory" (particularly after "evolutionary" or "gravitational") and dismiss it as conjecture.

Suppositions of a flat Earth are not theory. They're hypotheses - easily testable and disproveable hypotheses at that.

Everyone knows it's turtles all the way down. Honestly though, wouldn't a plane trip from NY to Japan (By way of crossing over the arctic) convince them otherwise? Or do they believe that anyone who flies to Japan via that route disappears forever?

They'll probably say there's something like a wormhole across the Pacific Ocean.

Well the whole earth is flat thing was plausible with gravity it just means we are on one side and for some reason it's pulling stuff down. We don't actually know why gravity pulls down to the center of the earth now as it is. However the whole earth is flat thing isn't even a discussion anymore since we have been to space and have seen that its a ball.
Gravity is basically like a trampoline, imagine that the trampoline is space and time, you're the sun, and there's little marbles at your feet that represent planets. When you stand on the trampoline, you bend space and time, and the bending causes the marbles to roll towards you. Make sense now?

This is why Model Dependent Realism is accepted and used by a lot of scientists. We observe a round world using the equipment we have today. Back then they didn't have this equipment, and there was nothing disproving the Flat-Earth Theory

Wait, you guys actually believe the Earth is round? Haha. Wow.
. . . .
There will always be doubters, 9/11 conspiracy theorists anyone?

That would make for an interesting thread

Sometimes I really question 9/11. But I remember watching it all unfold. I don't think the government would kill off that many people like that...although there is a high population...same with H1N1 (I had it, SUCKED), I wonder if the government release it to partially kill off part of the population...

9/11 and moon landing doubters are ridiculous, seems that they want to question everything for the lolz. 9/11 was carried out by terrorists, not Bush.
Then Homer Simpson would eat it.

It seems rediculous but it really makes you wonder what if...

The Flat Earth Theory , I thought this belief died out a long time ago .

Hard to imagine how people around the globe can function in society with such a narrow and fixed misunderstanding of the planet these days.

I wonder what other misconceptions they cling to ? Do they have other bizarre beliefs on top of this one?

There is a series about many conspiracies at HowStuffWorks called 'Stuff they don't want you to know'. Although the one I displayed was very far-fetched, there are some very plausible and interesting conspiracy vids in the series. I would recommend people checking out the Fluoride conspiracy.
All the videos are available on YouTube.

Agreed. I mean, they probably refuse to use any transport more advanced than a bicycle, and if they're stupid enough to think the earth is flat, how the hell did they manage to get a website running?
