Styling of the Focus is in the eye of the beholder. It doesn't do much for me, but that's not the issue I have with the car. Ford America has had tons of safety recalls, and the Focus is no exception. From Car Connection:
Ford is recalling the compact Focus lineup yet again - and this time the number of vehicles involved in the service action exceeds 570,000 cars. The 2000-2001 Focus is being recalled for the possibility of engine fires and for a loose bolt that could cause front suspension problems, in the process tallying the eleventh recall for the award-winning compacts. The engine fires are traced to a potential battery-cable issue in Focuses with Zetec engines; the front-suspension problem stems from a loose bolt in a ball joint.
My Neon has had ONE recall - to replace a coupler in the steering column. So I've got your 'poor build quality' right here, Alexy...

The American versionof the Focus is relatively heavy, and the handling is not up to par. I'm also not crazy about the interior; it's kind of cheezy IMHO, and the car seems a lot bigger outside than it does inside. The one I drove seemed very loose inside, and made a lot of rubbing noises, indicating that the chassis was not terribly stiff.

Grassroots Motorsports tested a Sean Whatsisname-tuned Focus, and they were underwhelmed, to say the least. Their comments were pretty much along the lines of "Well, for the price, there are a lot of better cars. The $6,000 spent on tuning and parts turned a mediocre car into a good one, rather than a good car into a great one."

I have a 95 Contour, since about 2 years ago. At least 5 recalls have been brought upon my car.

I really dont like Fords, but thats not the only reason. I do however like a few...and the Focus RS is one of them. The GT40 and GT90 are nice too!!! :D

Why don't British Fords get this problem?

Because Americans just don't get Fahrvegnugen. They want big, cushy couches on wheels. They want big engines that feel powerful, but aren't tuned well and don't get their pseudo-sports car going very fast. The British actually give a damn how their car performs on the road, and Ford, knowing this, builds the Focus sold there to slightly different (read: better) specs. In the US, it's all about image; elsewhere, substance matters.

This is, of course, all generalities.... ;)

Ohhhhhh, don't get me started.

How many Jags have you seen like this: when you turn the lights on, both taillights glow as normal. Apply the brakes - one gets double bright; the other goes out completely.

They don't call John Lucas the Prince of Darkness for nothing... I wouldn't give a farthing for British electrical systems. Or carburetors, for that matter!

Yes I'd like to think us British like a car :car: that can actually take a corner :curvyrd: unlike the :chevy: for example. As Jeremy Clarkson has said many times a :USA: car goes fast on US roads, throw it into a :uk: Hairpin found on those twisty country roads and it's got no chance

mmm don't know what your going on about with the :jaguar: thing?

Reliability is good UK Supercars , though :tvr:'s for example ae fab cars but I will have, 'niggly' problems, perhaps also found on :jaguar:? Also old convertibles will have leaking roofs :rain:

However neon duke don't diss Jaguar Electrics, as I think you'll find that :ford: are the parent company?

I'm talking about Jags made before Ford bought the nameplate. Many many of them have electrical problems.

Also, my friend has an older Triumph, for which he owns 3 carburetors: one that's on the car, a rebuilt one waiting to go on the car, and one on the bench waiting to be rebuilt. He rotates them when he changes the oil... because they need it.

Triumphs are quite sucky, ive never liked em. TVR`s used to be very unreliable when the had the Rover V8`s in them. But british engineering has improved a certain extent. Althoughj I still wouldnt buy an MG if you payed me.

Shame about the Focus over in the US, it passed somne strict german reliability test over here.

Also ive heard that the Focus RS has allot of Torque steer (?) where it becomes very twitchy on small bumpy surfaces.
