Red Bull to Michael Masi: Can we have that bit of our wing back?

So Bottas fastest in Hamilton's chassis? It is the car...
Is that how they did it in 2020 maybe? Bottas would top the timing sheets FP1 through to Q2, then Q3 Hamilton would come in and just demolish him. So they did a chassis swap between Q2 and Q3 then maybe?

It's first and foremost a test track, and whilst it has held competitive races since that conversion, it's primary function remains testing. So the corners are all surrounded by the same bright blue and red painted tarmac which means no punishment for drivers running wide, an eyesore on TV and harder to judge which corner you're looking at.

People might forgive that if racing there was good, but it isn't. The pretty much exclusive medium and high speed corners don't lend to close racing with modern aerodynamic cars and so both the 2018 and 2019 races were incredibly dull affairs. 2019 in particular is noted as having next to no action, sans the last couple of laps when Lando had a car issue which led to a few passes.

Decades ago it was way different, the Signes bend at the end of Mistral (no chicane) was one of the scariest turns on Earth. Now it's turn 10 and the whole 🤬 has become a swanky ophthalmic test track.

FP2 results:

Currently in FP3, the only cars into the 1'32s are the Mercedes, Verstappen... and Ricciardo.

Edit: Now both Mercedes, both Red Bulls, both McLarens and Sainz.

Edit: Now Verstappen into 1'31, and 1'31.3 at that!

And FP3 results:

Yuki and Antonio letting the double numbers down.
And Yuki letting more than that down in Q1. I think he's well on his way to having a "Has Yuki Spun Yet" website.

Quick reminder that Igor Fraga trounced him in the same car in the same team in the Toyota Racing Series in January/February 2020.

Man I don't think Yuki will end the season in his seat.
Only reason I think he'll stay, is that they don't have many alternatives (maybe bringing Albon back?)

But pretty sure he won't drive in 2022

He's got Lawson and Vips staring over his shoulder.

Which of course means the seat will probably go to Daruvala.

Stroll’s engineer always sounds annoyed on the radio.
Stroll always sounds like a toddler, so that probably does it.

Schumacher crashing and preventing anyone who'll likely beat his time from going quicker. Where have we heard that before?

First 2021 Q2 for a Haas?

That "percentage of car performance" graphic is more AWS absurdity. I liked how sceptical Martin sounded without actually saying it.

That's one hell of a lap time from Max. So much for the Red Bulls being at a disadvantage on proper race tracks.

Red Bull’s new power units came with some reliability upgrades iirc. They will be able to use more power in the races now.

So Lewis out-qualified Bottas in a chassis that Bottas couldn't make work and was supposedly not competitive in.....this doesn't look good at all for Bottas. To the comments that it's always the car and not Lewis, I'd like to know what the feedback is now lol

That aside, amazing lap from Max....I'm hoping this one will be a good race tomorrow. I'm good with either Max or Lewis winning I just hope this goes on until the last race of the season.

I don't recall anyone from Mercedes actually suggesting it was down to the chassis that Bottas struggled, it was the setup. As with everything in F1, people are making more out of this swap than necessary, now it's been confirmed they've already switched between them last season and start of this season. If the chassis was potentially problematic they certainly wouldn't have given it to Hamilton.

No point trying to reason with the "all because of the car" people anyway, they clearly don't know the sport.

Also someone dragged up a tweet from 2018 proving this has always been something they did.

I'd suppose most people accrediting much of Lewis's success to a superior car don't believe it to be chassis specific, but rather thanks to the design of the overall package.
