Nice. Good job, KMag.

What a shame it's a sprint though, he will be out of the top 10 for race proper on Sunday. Granted he'd still go backwards in that as well, but starting a proper race from P1 is always better.

Well, the sprint will be fun at least, since all the action will happen there and the grid will nicely reset itself for the race proper.

Is this at the same level as the Stroll pole at Turkey or an even bigger shock?

Seeing Kevin on top of his car in the garage celebrating with the team put a huge smile on my face, too bad it’s a sprint weekend.

Meanwhile P20 for Mick, oof.

I would say Stroll was in a more competitive car back then than the Haas is now
Stroll got the pole fair and square, K-Mag is only there because of Russells red flag and the changing circuit conditions while beeing red flagged.

I forget every time - is Sprint pole actually counted as pole pole, or is it only race pole?

If the former, Haas now has as many pole positions in 2022 as Mercedes.

It counts as a legit pole. Kevin got the pole position award.

I imagine this is to avoid confusion, plus with sprint changing things so much, it would be a bit unfair towards statistics as well.

Last year Pole was whoever started the GP at the front. (So even though Bottas won the Italy Sprint race, he started last and Max was credited with Pole Position)
This year, the winner of Qualifying is credited as Pole Position. So even if he DNfs in the Sprint tomorrow, Magnussen has Pole Position for Sao Paulo 2022.

The red flag and rain obviously helped tremendously but there was no luck in the actual lap. MAG went out on track only a few seconds before everyone else in Q3 and simply did the best lap. VER made a mistake, LEC got Ferrari'd, others were too cautious. MAG just nailed it so fair play to him.

Stroll got the pole in conditions that were basically ice, in a Mercedes clone, yes conditions were the same for everyone but thay car was a top3/4 car at most circuits. Remember Hulkenberg put that car P3 at Silverstone after just a weekend of driving it. As @Samus said, Magnusson did his lap on the same tyre as everyone else (bar Leclerc) in a significantly worse car than those around him.

The Haas seems very good under braking from that animation.
Great traction coming out of the last proper corner as well, really pulled away.

Be interesting to see how agressive he goes at the start. He's not exactly known for being cautious, something VER is also probably well aware of. Although with the RB traction off the line it could be academic by T1.

Leclerc witnessed Ferrari cut the balls off Vettel and fire him for trying to take some control of strategy, now he's too afraid to do anything. This is the saddest thing in motorsport today. Ferrari ruining yet another generational talent's career.

edit

Also the lack of experience. The "question" radio calls came too late. Sainz seems to have a better handle with these clowns than Charles. sigh

Three cars noted for start procedure infringement. :/

****** move from Stroll on his teammate, pushing Vettel into the grass.

Excellent racing from George and Max! George pulling away with a 2-second lead.

10-Second Penalty for Stroll, Max gets a warning about track limits.
