For those of you with freezing and crashing issues, do you have and older fat PS3 or a slim?

I would bet 99% of the time this is caused by an overheating issue and not a software problem.

The fat PS3's YLOD(yellow light of death) a good percentage of the time due to the breaking down of the thermal paste between the heat sink and processor which cause the processor to overheat and then, ultimately the solder on the processor weakens. This is why re-flowing the solder on the fatty's can sometimes bring a YLOD back from death.

A PS3 is just a computer and, like any computer, an overheated processor can cause freezing and crashing.

That could be, I do have the fatter PS3. But mine never locked up before the v1.06 update and it seems to be fine immediately after I exit the game and re-start it (the game, not the PS3). So the PS3 is not having a chance to cool down. To clarify, it's just GT5 that freezes, not my entire PS3. If I exit the game I can still do other things with the PS3. My PS3 is fine when playing other games, blu-ray discs, dvd's etc... So far, it's only happened when playing GT5. The first occurrence was a minute or two after starting my PS3 (it had been off for a while and was cool). I was upgrading the tires on a car in the tuning shop and it locked up solid. I would venture a guess that in that situation, it had not had time to heat up yet.

I've got a launch PS3 and only once encountered a game hang, it was my fault as I pressing buttons way to quickly. My brother has a slim and he's has his whole system lock up on a few occasions.

PS3's won't ever die if you keep them well ventilated and free from dust.

My original fatty was clean and well ventilated yet still succumbed to YLOD, but it did make it 5yrs. The worst one can do is turn it off and on too frequently which can cause expansion and contraction of the solider and possibly an early YLOD. I've had my new slim on for two months straight at on point since GT5 was released!
