It's 100% complete and total urban legend. Not that it's not funny, because it is, but it's definitely not true. Every US aircraft carrier since the Langley has had a little thing you might have heard of called radar, which is really quite handy for telling whether that light you see flashing is mounted on a little boat or on a large land mass that would cause you no end of trouble with your superiors if you ran into it.
