Funny/Strange News Stories

2. Except for an omg moment generating views, what value is there to the story?
It reflects on Gran Turismo's value as a driving simulator, for one thing. It can be tied back to the fact that GT Sport was marketed with the tagline "Driving is for everyone" (possibly as an extension or proof of the concept, like the elderly drivers we heard about. In addition, I've never heard of a PD using a racing simulator to benefit their drivers in emergency situations.

In addition, I've never heard of a PD using a racing simulator to benefit their drivers in emergency situations.

That's exactly what they've done in this case - they've proposed (and paid for) a test of the simulation with its performance measured against on-track training. Why wouldn't a police force give that a try for free?

Personally I think that this represents the future but that the police are far more likely to collectively purchase simulator facilities (at Hendon, for example) that simulate road hazards. I suspect that if track time was shown to have a benefit in making progress at speed in traffic situations then we'd see already track training as part of the Advanced curriculum. This test unfortunately doesn't tell us anything about how track skills translate to such activities. Bear in mind that Traffic Officers tend to be highly trained as it is, a far cry from those who drive vans'n'pandas.

UK Banks Exposed to Money Laundering. Absolutely nothing funny about the story (even Peter Hain's tan) but the thumbnail on the BBC homepage made me think it must all be them Muslims' fault.

....Umm, what the hell?!

Robert Mugabe named as a goodwill ambassador for WHO, BBC.

Really?! I... am utterly befuddled.

Don know why, he's a really nice guy. Him and Kim throw excellent murder mystery parties.

And with that, the UN lost the last bit of credibility it had left.
Saudi Arabia is on the UN Human Rights Council, and the women's rights commission for the UNHRC.

A country whose laws call for stoning to death, beheading, crucifixion and mutilation for "criminals" (these sentences are often conveyed on adulterers, homosexuals and apostates) without jury trials gets to sit in judgment on others for human rights.

A country whose laws prevent adult women from working, travelling or medical care without permission from a male guardian, where women cannot divorce while men can do so without reason (and where men can be polygamous), where a woman's testimony is considered half as worthwhile as a man's in court, where female literacy is 20% less than male literacy, where women must cover their head at all times, where woman couldn't vote until 2015, where women are segregated from men, and which is ranked as the fourth worst place on the entire planet to be female (at least they're not routinely carrying out FGM, killing female babies, or marrying girls off as soon as they have their first menstruation, eh?) gets to sit in judgment on others for women's rights.

Appointing Mugabe as a Goodwill Ambassador is nothing by comparison - and a Goodwill Ambassador is a nothing role.

Unsurprisingly he's been un-named.

a Goodwill Ambassador is a nothing role.

True, but the word "Goodwill" and its default association with the UN/WHO carries some meaning regardless of whether or not he carries any active portfolio. The reaction to Mugabe being named "goodwill" anything by anybody (other than himself) is incredible enough, for the UN/WHO to do so seems very ill-judged given their roles.

And yet it's still not the most offensive or ill-judged thing that the UN has done this year, and by several orders of magnitude...

How did I know the scene and quote without even clicking on the link.
Oh thats right, I have memorized pretty much most simpsons quotes.

You missed the perfect opportunity to use the "I'm no super-genius, or are I?" line, I am disappointed.
