G25 Clutch video

Track IR support would be great, I hope GT5 supports something like that.

Linked from https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=101028, but as some has requested seeing more clutch in game footage, this shows a 2 lap race using the clutch.

I quickly filmed this race to show the Online Event Window to give an idea to those that haven't seen how it works yet.

Basically, the Online Event lists 8 events to choose from. Some are race events where the others are time trials. The race events allow for multiplayer online play. I've played with up to 16 players, 8 players, and as small as 4 players.

In this video, I raced around Suzuka Circuit with the Nissan R34 GT-R using in car view with using the clutch feature on the Logitech G25.

There are some rough races, where drivers are driving everywhere on the course and hitting each other. The penalties help to allow some smooth play. Those that break the rules get penalized by not allowing to accelerate for a short amount of time. Not quite sure how it calculates it, but I think it depends on how serious the penalty was. Those cars will turn into ghost cars and you can drive through them preventing them from interfering with your race.

In this race, I was lucky not to run into much of that besides one bump that threw me of course some.

Thats a nice job there Breaker. I'm glad to see that the hell-toe technique works will with the game.

I sent you a PM....can you let me know whats up with your setup..Thanks!

I have a G25, and when i put the gear box in manual mode, the game recognizes it fine.. but the clutch wont work.. am i missing something? is there a setting somewhere that i have forgotten to change?

You have to press triangle everytime you start a race to enable it.

since everyone already asked my questions ill just throw up some new ones that haven't been asked yet.

can you grind the gears?

does the clutch/flywheel wear and tear during long races?

how does the reverse function work with the shifter?

is there different resistant patterns with the shifter with different cars? ex. zo6 shifter compared to a integra type-R

so it drops to 0 RPM?

You can't grind gears in the game, but if you miss shift you can break your shifter unit. Not in the same sense as grinding your gears, but the unit allows for two settings.

1. Sequential shifting. Up and down. (to enable...Push down on the shifter and turn the knob over to sequential mode)
2. 6 gated - H pattern shifting with Reverse gear. (to enable...Push down on the shifter and turn the knob over to gated mode)

If you are playing in 6 gated H pattern and you are not carefull when you shift you can end up being locked out of the gated gears. If you push down on the shifter while shifting, it locks the shifter into 3rd and 4th gear to support sequential shifting. Make sure you tell that to your friends that play. They may think it's all smooth until they push down on the shifter and try to shift to 2nd gear or 5th gear and find that it's been locked out due to pushing down on the shifter.

There's no damage to flywheel in this game.

Reverse works by pushing down and shifting to where 6th gear is.

one of the things im going to be comparing this to is the old Sega F355 challange game. remember anyone...

This setup was one of the first to have a gated H shift 6 speed.

It was very advanced for the time (1999) and even though the graphics wern't all that, you couldn't complain with the Ferrari F355 as the car and the real race circuits round the world which were included.

One of my favorite features about the game was the 3 screen layout: front, left side, right side views!

The party piece was the transmission though.

1. Easy to miss shift just like in real life
2. Can "Clutch kick" to break the rear
3. Can flat foot shift and feel somewhat accurate
4. Shifter felt real with the ball grip and required a real throw to shift.
5. The heal-toe downshifting is incredibly accurate.... i really think you become a better driver with this set up.

There were faults though!

1. It would let you shift without the clutch at times or default to neutral
2. The braking feel was horrible
3. With graphics back then, you didnt know how long till the corner.
4. Steering feel left alot to be desired as you can "turn with 1 finger" .

Overall the game is not easy and if you could beat a level by taking first place you are pretty good driver.

This is the benchmark for GT5 + G25 so i hope they hold a candle to this.

The steering and graphics are already there so its time for the rest. I think the biggest issue for me so far is that ive tried the g25 and the shift knob feels so flimsy which is very inaccurate of real manual transmission. But oh well... GT really needs to get into the manual + steering wheel revoltion and absolutly get rid of the six axis cause you dont drive a real car with that.

can anyone make more videos with clutch shown? and miss shift some gears ;)
and is it possible to do a burnout now? brake. and gass that kinda of thing..

That arcade rig was sweet. I've put in lots of practice on it and it helped to make the choice for getting the G25 easier.

Didn't you already buy this wheel?

F355 Challenge wasn't one of the first to incorporate a clutch & gated shifter (maybe just the 6 speed aspect?). I myself learned how to drive stick on a game called Hard Drivin' (1988 - Wiki 1 & Wiki 2 and this additional One specifically for Race Drivin') though I migrated to Race Drivin' (1990) the successor of HD as it was more fun. Now I can't confirm this to be the first game with a clutch but it pre-dates F355 by nearly 11 years. Just a bit of misc. info, when I first started to play it in about 1990 it was $1 back then!

bro, cant tell you how amazed i am someone still remembers that game! I must have blown $10000 in coins on that game! I still remember how realistic the physics were (to a 16 year old) and the way you had to shift properly otherwise there would be a gearbox grinding noise and it would just neutral (making you depress the clutch again to fix it) .Also had a metal gated shifter that made a nice niose when power/flat shifting. Please make the next G25 like this Logitec:tup:

Yes, why not. I was waiting for how long you are going to update your drift tutorial thread for so damn long. Like the video link always expired and all, or that you don't actually have any description on how to drift. But it would be great if there was a tutorial. I still find it hard to drift with my G25. I can drift some corners but its almost impossible for me to do link ups or chain drifts. But by the looks of things in that video, you seem rather a lot smoother than your GT4 drifts. Well thats a good sign of there is no longer the "dreaded snap understeer" from GT4.....

and try not to post so many times, just use the
multiquote_off.gif
to multi quote :sly:

I am still thinking out how I would create a tutorial. Maybe follow along the lines of how the Drift Bible was done. Hmm... maybe. :)

Descriptions are out there on the techniques to drift, but in the end it comes down to practice and getting the timing down and a feel for it. Watching videos of others doing it and try to see if you can mimic the same lines. The steering and throttle inputs to control a drift and such will come instinctively through seat time.
This is a sample of some G25 Drifting that I create today.

Drift Day practice session.

After finishing GT5 Prologue I decided to start on drifting again. For a while I put drifting aside as I focused on completing the missions and trying out some of the online racing.

Now that much of that has passed, it's back to enjoying some drifting. I called this video Drift Day to set the setting for the video. Imagine it as a day at the tracks to practice drifting using the car you brought. All the clips are from this one session on Fuji Speedway using the BMW M3. (less)

Sick video, Breaker. What's the title of the first song? By the way, I'll get my ps3 within 2 months then we'll drift together again. Good to see you still running up.

Hopefully by the time you get your PS3 there is a way to host private rooms or if the game supports LAN we can go back to XLink Kai and set up a network session.

don't know if there is an existing thread (direct me there if there is) - i don't care about the lack of real clutch progression, but the steering has me concerned. Is there, or will there be, feedback similar to the realfeel plugin for rfactor? I know when i disable hardware plugins in rfactor, the steering feels disconnected and similar to old wheels with no feedback at all...

Great Job BreakerOhio!:D:tup: That's how true drifting is done. I must say, the whole setup that you have, I LOVE IT...it's SO AWESOME...I mean the race wheel with its full 900 degree turning capability, the shifter position, & the fact that the pedals include a functional clutch, BRILLIANT!!!

BMW 135i GT5 Prologue Drift Session.

Drifts were done using the car's natural motions by applying the weight transfers to break traction. Using Feint motion, braking, and lift off techniques.

Braking Tech:
The key for the braking drift technique is to get the correct timing of releasing the clutch. You need to shift down smoothly (with heel-toe), rather than locking the gears as you do with the shift lock technique.

Feint Tech:
Sometimes called the inertia drift. Rally drivers refer to it as the Scandinavian Flick.

Lift Off Tech:
Combined with Feint Motion on linking or going through high speed drifts. After the tunnel section. Also called Kansei Drifting.

am i noticing that the g25 spins freely in your hands when you let go on drifts....just like in real life????? Is this true?????? I have a DFP which never did this! Please someone, tell me it's true, so I don't have to pinch myself!

I haven't tried it in GT5:P yet but it sure does in several PC based games such as Racer, Live for Speed, rFactor and so on. Can't wait to get ahold of a PS3 with GT5:P (or the final game for that matter) and do some racing. I'll be sure to look you up Breaker :)

As far as drifting and realism goes, you can't 'churp' 2nd gear(or 3rd like u would on some high hp cars) its especially ridiculous with the econo tires. When you clutch kick you have to have the weight already transfered more dramatically than in real life to break the rears lose... same goes for shift lock technique.

Btw BreakerOhio, me and my buddy have the same exact setup...do you know Bob Earl?

It appears to me that the clutch has a slipping period even after dumping the clutch, the reason the tyres can't hook up instantly. Much like in real life that has a modified high hp engine or extra grippy tyres but a weak clutch.

I think in full GT5 it will probably be the same with standard cars, although buying clutch upgrades will fix the biting/hooking up time of the clutches ( I hope). In some cases this is realistic but in most it is not as standard clutches usually can handle everything a standard car and give (to an extent).

okay i was basing that off of a bone stock 350z which i own and drift in real life...its my daily driver...unfortunately gt5p is not even close :/

my dedicated drift car is s13 240.

Are you saying that it's not possible to shift even into neutral in the game without the clutch?
I need to get rid of my real life habit of changing gears without clutching.. :D
All it takes is just some delicate accelerator control
