Gas prices, dominicks, and the economy

So theres this Dominicks gas station by my house. Prior to this big hike in gas prices, they were probably 5 to 10 cents cheaper than anywhere else. But now after the hike they are the most expensive gas in town, their regular is almost as much as premium anywhere else. So wtf is all this about?

There was a hurricane named Katrina. It hit Louisiana a few days ago. It forced almost all the refineries down there to shut down and brought oil production to a 90% standstill in the Gulf of Mexico. It also crippled pipelines to the midwest and to the east.

Long story short, you don't put oil in your gas tank; you do, however, put gas into it. Gas is refined oil. With no operable refineries to refine the oil and no pipelines to carry the oil once it has been refined, there is a shortage. When there is a shortage, prices increase. By alot.

We've been getting price hikes for the last 3 - 4 years!

For comparison's sake - a litre of Premium is now NZ$1.56. After some quick maths, that's about US$4.34 a gallon!

It's about 3.10 around here. Went up 50 or so cents yesterday. Haha.

2.99 here. I filled up the day Katrina hit at a monthly low of 2.41 a gallon. The very next day it was up to 2.99 and stayed there pretty steadily.

It's $1.28/litre here in Canada. Ridiculous. I remember when it was like 65 cents, and even then people were all bltching and complaining about the prices.

I don't understand why my local gas station (in New Jersey) has raised prices. They payed the "normal" fee to have their tanks filled before this hurricane. Now, the price suddenly raises a crazy ammout, but they haven't recieved any new gas (which would probably cost much more) So why raise the prices untill its actiually costing them more to buy it? Bastards. 👎

If anyone so much as sneezes in the oil companies, gas will go up. So now there's a hurricane. Time for something substantial.
Our gas has gone up more than $.25/liter since the end of July. Prices as of today are $1.20/liter. The stupid part is our goddamn government is being greedy. Of our gas prices, almost half of the cost is gov't taxes. And they tax the taxes, too. Now gee, I wonder why there's suddenly a gov't surplus? When gas was around 50-60 cents/liter, they were making the right amount off taxes, but now they've got money out the wazoo.

The only thing worse than this is that Canada produces lots of oil! Sure, not much compared to the Middle East, but I'm sure that if we kept all the oil we produced that we could be self sufficient. Which raises the questions of where does all our oil go, and why are our prices affected so much by Katrina? Especially since we do produce oil.

One thing to remember, however, is that our gas is crappier.

There are places in Georgia where regular unleaded ( 89 octane ) is selling for over 6.50/gallon. Our premium unleaded is only 93 octane and that is selling for around 9.00/gallon there.

The oil companies have known for a long time roughly how much oil there is left in the ground and how it is going to cost a lot to get it out because it is no longer the EasyStuff. Then think of demand , it is set to SOAR ; You could'nt call China depopulated but the amount of cars on the road there is set to increase by a factor of ten in five years time. Hugely greater demand and more difficult means of production of a finite resource in the hands of companies means any opportunity to explain what will be absurd price hikes in petroleum products is gonna be leapt at . They are the industry , they know the score ; oil prices will not decrease & they will be prohibitive, nay , insane in upcoming years . So get the message in early :"Oil was a staple like food , tommorrow it will be a precious mineral or substance like Diamonds."

I drive the Subie now. Speaking of the truck though, my mom drove it today, and I think she hit a pole or something – there's a dent on the side and lots of white paint. She told my dad about it, but I didn't catch that part of the conversation. That would be the second time she's hit a pole on the right side of that truck.

When you were driving it, did you actually trust the gauge? Ford gas gauges are notoriously inaccurate.

I dunno – as a rule, I just put $20 in the tank when it dips below the halfway mark. Works for every vehicle, regardless of accuracy. I might have to up that default to $25 with these rising gas prices though.

I'll sell you my Corolla: It has a 10 gallon tank, whcih means at $3/gal x 5 gallons = 15 credits.

You can save the other 5 credits for Photo Mode or something.

Have you been to the tar-sands? Crazy development out there. Urban sprawl. Especially in Fort McMurray.

I guess some gas stations in Oregon has raised prices due to the gas shortage caused by Katrina. According to the Attorney General, those gas stations are price gouging, and there is no gas shortage in Oregon. She said that if those stations(in Oregon) tell you that their high price is do to Katrina, they are lying. 👎

I haven't been to the tarsands, but I lived in just south of Edmonton for 14 years. Crazy money nowadays floating around McMurray.

Our Petrol (sorry, 'gas' then), is sky high over here in good 'ol Great Britain. The garage down the road from me is:

98.9p a litre for Diesel
and
96.9p a litre for Unleaded Standard Petrol (or gas) (*i don't know these prices in dollars)

We've sent all our fuel reserves to yous lot affected by this frigging Hurricane Katrina, so fuel prices have rocketed over here. Plus, we have an overly greedy Government who want to push the fuel price up to £1 a litre by the end of this month. And due to the involvement in Iraq by us and the US, we've put fuel prices up because of the fact that the Oil Pipelines were getting burnt by the Iraqis, and because the Americans tried to steal all the Oil.

The oil in the middle east is easy oil i.e stick a straw-in-the-sand-and-suck oil . The tar sands of Alberta , deep ocean oil and russian arctic oil are more difficult to get at and by the time the companies are forced to rely on these reserves , $3 will be laughable , just remember companies know things that they don't want you to know , especially ones whose only super lucrative product is set to deplete.

Because the d*mn oil companies are using the downed refineries to their advantage. Its all gouching and its all bunch of bull crap.

$2.99 (whoops, I meant $2.98 ) is the lowest here with the most at $3.29.

I feel sorry for those people paying $6/gallon.
No more Hummers there, apparently.
