General Model Kit Building Thread

The kit is probably not expensive compared to the stuff to build it. You can't build a half-assed aston, the paint has to look good :sly:
Seriously though, the aston looks hard to build, good luck. Oh how I wish there were more interest in car model building here where I live.
EDIT: Just looked at the list price for the aston... Expesnive indeed, I would never pay more than $40-$50 for a model kit

It's true that tools are expensive. For paint you can get away with spray cans, but I have an airbrush now so it's not a problem.

And I'm sure I've built cheaper kits that are harder to build. It's a pain when none of the parts fit or things look weird. This is why I actually bought the Aston. I want to try out an expensive one, since Tamiya is one of the best out there.

Seriously. I hate it when parts don't fit.

Never buy the kit for the 80's Dodge Daytona than. The parts are so far off from fitting properly that I questioned if they were made for the same kit. Horrible, horrible model to build and left me feeling like I was doing some kit bashing. 👎

I know the feeling. At times like that when you're sick of a kit you should leave it alone for a while. I make the most mistakes when I'm agitated.

I finished a kit today though. It's an old one (was made in 1980), but I was quite surprised at how easy it was to build.

"Big Red" Chevy pickup.

It was supposed to have some confederate flags and stars and such, but the decals turned yellow, so I decided to not use them.
The front bumper and the fences were made from wood because I wasn't very convinced the plastic ones would look like wood at all.
There's some mistakes here and there, but overall I'm glad with how it came out.

Nice work! The color is great, and the real wood is a great touch. Whats up with the clear brake lights though? Was that on purpose?

Thanks!
I didn't want to paint it because paint doesn't stick to chrome at all. I could try and get the chrome off there, but I would risk damaging it. And you don't get any clear plastic to put over the chrome, so I couldn't paint that even if I wanted to.

I always give the area a light sanding, or use a wire brush on my dremel, just to scuff up/remove the chrome, and then paint them if lenses aren't provided.

What kind of wood did you use? You just gave me a pretty good idea for my El Camino project I'm still working on.

I'll be sure to post some, but at the rate its going it won't be done for another year or two.

My color choice keeps flipping between a Chevy red and old school greenish/brown.

okay, I finally started working on the 360 modena spider I got, and it's coming along pretty well.

I'm done with step three and now working on the interior. I ended up getting a silver chrome enamel paint from Hobbytown, and it's working out well
I'll update back when the interior is finished

Don't forget to paint both sides of the wheel wells. You don't know how many times I've thought the body would cover something up, only to find out I have to mask off a bunch of stuff and do some more painting.

For the spots that would be hard to paint when the car's fully built, wouldn't it be a better idea to paint those first before assembling the car?

Especially the suspension. I can't see getting the entire spring too easily with it already glued in place.

Working on the prepainted Aoshima S13.

Also got a RN30 Hilux. This Hilux isn't mine, but it will be painted the same color, and will be sitting on the Fujimi 345 series Watanabes.

I think my next model will be the R32 Skyline. I have a soft spot for late 80's Nissans it seems.

Keep us up to date with the F1 car mate. Pics would be good.👍
F1 cars are my model of choice here's a couple of mine.

I think I've got about 7 unstarted Tamiya kits, I tend to buy them when I see them for a good price. Sadly I don't get enough spare time.

Cheers Shaun.

Will update you guys. Unfortunately my damn camera is broken so I can't take any pics.

Yeah I checked out your ones. They are really good man! I love them.

Alright. When Im done with the Silvia S13 I'll do the Hilux and an R32 GTR. I already have the paint and wheels for the Hilux. Can't decide if I want to use the tires it came with or go STRETCH.

Go with the Watanabes, the ones that come with the truck are a little too bling for my taste.

I see what you did there, lol...my vote goes to the stretched looking ones on the right, especially if you're going to stance it out.

If you're going to throw a 2JZ under the hood and make a sleeper/sport truck, toss the ones on the left on the truck.

I agree completely, that's gonna look nice.
I need to get into another model, anyone got any suggestions? Also, it can't be one of those super expensive models, something more along the lines of 30 dollars, maybe more, maybe less

I thought about putting a 2JZ in there, but the plastic on the truck is THICK. It's probably a good 3mm thick.

I actually thought about making a street truck, and throwing a tool box, and some fenders or trunk in the bed.

I think I migt buy another set of these watanabes. They look sick on my 77 Celica.

I think the problem is they look sick on just about everything.

Motortrend - Head down to your local hobby store and see what kind of selection they have. Or if you want to order online, start thinking of some cars/trucks/whatever you would like to build, and then find out what model companies make them. That would probably be your best start if you're looking to get back into it.

Do you want an easy kit just to get back into it? How about a Snap Kit? From what I've heard, they are incredibly easy.

Nah I got some free time since I am on vacation so I could get mildly challenging kit, I was thinking along the lines of a 964 or 993 Porsche RS but I don't seem to find any so a GT-R R32 could be a nice secondary choice or an NSX but I haven't seen any NSX models. I would go to my local hobby shop but usually what they have there is only some revell muscle car kits which I'm not too interested in, though I could go check since they have some interesting Fujimi kits once in a while.

After watching this video:
I became interested in that model, so it may be that one, but since I already have a Porsche I'm leaning towards a GT-R or maybe a Ferrari 550 or 575 could look nice with the Porsche. Then again, I do have one which is the body for a Mini-Z but an actual model in the same color with all the detail and a body would look very good. Here is a picture of the 930 with the Ferrari Mini-Z body:

That's a great looking 911 model!

If you're talking about the one I built then thanks. I think I'm swaying towards getting the Porsche just like the video one since I don't really like the Ferrari kit and I'm not very sure about all of the R32 kits out there
