General Model Kit Building Thread

Saw that model in a shop around here and thought about getting it. Hurry up and complete it so I can see how well built it is and maybe I'll put it on my list.

Finished this a few weeks ago:

Had a lot of fun building it, and it had quite a good outcome being my 2nd model ever built and 3rd body shell ever painted

That looks fantastic motortrend! Very clean! Is that a Fujimi or a Tamiya? Or something else?

Thanks. It is a Tamiya model, and the half roll cage was made by me. I can post some pictures of the build process if you want

Thats a stellar job for being the 3rd body you've painted. Way back when, I still had paint running on the 5th lol :dopey:

I wouldn't mind seeing the cage you built, it would be interesting to kit bash a race spec Porsche from that kit.

After checking this page I wanted to built something myself! I've never done it, but I ordered Tamiya Nissan 2000 GTR and Tom's Supra! It'll take a week or 2 to arrive since it's overseas, can't wait..

Give me some tips, how to start, what paint to buy, and what not... I really haven't done anything like this!

And that 911 looks awesome! Would have painted the heart of the wheels black though..

If I were you I would start with something not that sticker heavy since those can break easily and are not very easy to put on the first time. The best advice I can give you is to be very patient with everything and wait for everything to dry before going on to doing something else. The paint I use is tamiya rattle can spray paint, and the I go over it with a clear gloss coat, which is not always necessary. Also, it is a good idea to sand down the body prior to painting and if there are any imperfections also sand them down after the paint has dried itself and then continue to paint. I really thought about painting the center black but it would be very hard to mask it and have no paint running, so I left it like that. I also contemplated painting the whole wheel matte white to give it sort of a racing look but I just left it like that.

Got them today!! (The Tom's Supra and Skyline 2000GTR). Going to the shop tomorow to buy me some paint and other stuff, after I did motortrend's tip, sanding down the body.. Any advice on what I should get?

Also, I could use some ideas on the 2000GTR.. I'm going to start with this car since it's less detailed and it's my first time.. The Supra is so heavily detailed, it's insane! I was thinking of to do a stripped down version of the 2000GTR, so loose the interior, but then I need me some bucketseats and rollcage and other stuff but I can't really find 'm on eBay.. Where do you guys buy these?

I really really like this one:
KPGC10-003.jpg

So as you can see, I need some wider wheels, bucket seats and a rollcage (or built a rollcage, but with what materials? Straws?) Also need some advice on lowering the car, cut the springs?

Edit 1:
Sorry, alot of questions.. But.. I found this:

@ Carlos.

If you havn't already, read from hear on for a few pages. Lots of good tips here.

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29704&page=270

Just a couple of basic tips.

1 Always dry fit the parts before gluing to make sure of a good fit prior to gluing. Saves alot of mess and heartbreak.

2 When painting gloss paints remember any imperfections that you see prior to painting will look many times worse once painted.

If you have any specific questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer them. Good luck. :)

Cheers Shaun.

I think the other thread kind of got turned into both for a little while, but if its 1/24 or 1/25 models that you build, I'd keep it in this thread since you'll get more specific answers to any questions.

Jay! How your doin? The car still running rich? haha.

Yeah guess so, I'll post my progress here.. If I don't get replys I'll post it in the other thread..

Nope, after more mods, its now running lean!

You should get a reply in this thread. I might not post much, but check for it everyday. I should really get some pics of my models and post them...finished a few, and started a couple more, plus have a bunch still in boxes that I want to start.

Carlos, there are a few bucket seats on Ebay, like these:

As for the cage, The best thing is to make your own with 1/16 rods or maybe a bit thicker ones if you want something more race-like, just keep in mind that they are thicker than they look by themselves and that they get a bit thicker with the paint. I used 1/16 ones on the Porsche.
This video helpeded me quite a bit with the cage:

I have a question for you skilled assemblers. I am currently working on a Tamiya Calsonic Skyline model and was wondering about painting the body. The body came molded in blue. I just fine sanded it but couldnt find any primer at my hobby store. Would spraying it with flat white as a primer then the blue work just as good? Or should I just spray the blue without a primer?

I used matt white (ts-27) to paint mine and it came out looking good, even though I don't think the primer was completely necessary. So yes, you can use flat white as a primer. Post pics of it when you're done, even if it has some mistakes

hey I just got this from hobbytown U.S.A
picture133t.jpg

for the body, I'm thinking about blue
any suggestions for any paint colors

So I went to a model kit competition. I didn't enter, but there were some kits being sold.

First BMW car ever made!

And my most expensive kit yet I believe (I'm cheap like that).

Oh dear... what have I done?

What year did Revell make that kit? I don't think I've ever seen it and it looks like an interesting build.

The kit is probably not expensive compared to the stuff to build it. You can't build a half-assed aston, the paint has to look good :sly:
Seriously though, the aston looks hard to build, good luck. Oh how I wish there were more interest in car model building here where I live.
EDIT: Just looked at the list price for the aston... Expesnive indeed, I would never pay more than $40-$50 for a model kit
