General Model Kit Building Thread

have been absent from modeling for about 15 years and decided to take it up again. I used to build WW1 and WW2 fighters but now my interest is in 1/20 scale Formula 1 cars from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s. Over the last few months I have purchased hobby supplies including my first airbrush. I now have the following Tamiya 1/20 scale kiys:

McLaren Honda MP4/5B

Williams Renault FW 13B

Jordan 191

Benetton Ford B192

Lotus Ford 107B

Braun Tyrrell Honda 020

Is one of these kits a better choice for me to start with for my first build than another? In other words are they all at the same level of skill required to build or is one kit any easier (less complex) than another? Or is there any of these kits I should not start with for my first build?
Thanks for your advice, Jim

All of those kits seem pretty much the same to me in terms of difficulty. I say start with whichever you want.

Wheels are not broken just cambered
Yes. With some serious camber. :ill:
I guess you never of heard of a close up shot, using a close slightly out of focus low down angle.
Indeed, I have never heard of a kind of photography skill that necessarily requires the focus to be blurry. :dunce:
If your going to be a jerk and smart mouth and least know what your talking and know your car culture and history.
I'm not being a jerk, I'm just giving you criticism. :P

And by the way since you obviously didnt notice these kits are easily returnable to uncambered so dont get your panty's in a bunch about stuff that not yours and stuff you dont know about

Do your models purposefully look so satin? Only the red car (not the RX7) seems to be glossy.
Just wondering.

the two tone skyline is chalk board black and flat blue, the city hatch is actual 94 honda civic sedan blue with flat clear, the smx is vw beetle pink 1 stage. the gloria is pastel pink and the white city vert is flat white no clear and the red buick gnx is finger nail polish red with nail polish clear over top, so that one is going to shime like hell which is why its the furthest away as the sun reflects to much outside and the camera catches glare. So in simple terms yes it is intensional.

Lose the bad attitude if you wish to remain a member at our forums. Okay?

i have no attitude i just dont tolerate keyboard warriors who assume to much. And i was quite until the smart comments started. I made no remarks until people started with me. If he would have kept his childish replys to his self i would have remained quite. He started it and I dont see you giving him a hard time. go back and read for your self ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Whoever started what is irrelevant. You have a problem with someone? Put them on your ignore listor report them. Taking matters into your own hands as you did won't end well.

The green civic doesnt roll even if you follow the directions and build it that way, the blue and black skyline does and so does the city vert with the camber the rest dont roll when cambered. but do in stock form which they are easly returnable to.

I'm working towards getting the current kit I'm building ready for painting. Williams FW13b.

First time doing a multicolored car. My main question is... how should I go about masking off the bodywork for the various colors?

Do you have a dedicated hobby store in your area?
Not a craft store, a hobby store. A craft store may have what you need, but you should only go there if you don't have a hobby store.

Okay, well a craft store will have to do. Hobby Lobby, Pat Catan's, etc.
If they have have a model section go check there for some 1/4" - 1/8" wide masking tape. If nothing, then maybe check where the tapes are located.
And if that doesn't work or you don't have a craft store, I'd next try a dedicated paint store like Sherwin Williams or something.
If that doesn't work, then you need to find a better place to live!
Nah, then I'd say try a hardware store. 👍

I hope this helps.

And don't get the cheapest tape either. Those suck.

I recommend 3M tape. That one is nice.

Yes, absolutely. Forgot to mention that.

I use Tamiya brand tape, it's wonderful.

Currently I only have a very limited amount of Pactra Trim Tape. Not enough for what I need though.

My biggest concern is masking off paint and having it peel off with the tape when I have to cover other areas.

Peel it off while its still wet/tacky, that way it won't come off with the tape, and should leave a nice crisp line.

If you mean the paint underneath the tape, than stop using duct tape

If the paint peels you either have bad tape or the paint job is bad.
Either way something needs to be changed.

Oh and you need to post some pictures paint guy (Ahmed)! :dopey:

Lovely paint job on that one paint guy!

Looks really good with silver paint and a red interior.

The only completely finished one that I feel like putting photos up of.
A 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air drag car.
I'm pretty happy with it. :sly:

Thats a very up skill model to build, specially the roll cage and the chassis, it toke me days to build mine, finally I ended placing all that stuff under a 56 primered chevy nomad
