The wait is over.

Looks like Hyundai put the code in their website before the press conference.

http://www.hyundaiusa.com/shoppingtools/byo/model.aspx?Vehicle=Genesis Coupe&Year=2010

So that means we get an early peek at pricing:

2.0T - $22,000
2.0T Premium - $24,250
2.0T Track - $26,750
3.8 - $25,000
3.8 Premium - $27,500
3.8 Track - $29,500

I was hoping it would start at 19 grand MSRP. Oh well. Maybe they'll surprise us again for the press conference.

[Update] Here is the press release leaked, thanks to genesisforums.org:

HYUNDAI DEBUTS A HIGH–PERFORMANCE BLANK CANVAS FOR TUNERS: GENESIS COUPE R-SPEC
CHICAGO, Feb. 11, 2009 – When the colors of your new turbocharged rear-wheel-drive sport coupe are named after international racing circuits, you’d better have the performance and confidence to back it up. Now, Hyundai is upping the ante by announcing an R-Spec version of the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe, designed to appeal to true enthusiasts who want a low starting price and the ability to tune their car to their own specifications. R-Spec will be available as a mid-2010 model year introduction.
R-Spec provides genuine track-readiness in an affordable model. The R-Spec adds core performance equipment to the most affordable 2.0T model, such as: Track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance summer tires, Brembo® braking system, Torsen limited-slip differential, and R-Spec badging. To further reduce cost and weight, it also eliminates some non-essential convenience equipment such as: Bluetooth®, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls. The Genesis Coupe R-Spec will be priced at $23,750 and $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model, leaving tuners with extra cash for their own choice of aftermarket performance upgrades. Appropriately, the R-Spec will be available in three performance oriented exteriors colors: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red.

R-Spec equipment includes:
• 2.0-liter low-pressure turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable valve timing delivering 210-hp, an estimated 30 mpg EPA highway rating and a top speed of 137 mph
• 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission
• Electronic Stability Control with Traction control, ABS, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist
• 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with staggered-width high-performance summer-compound Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires (225/40YR19 front, 245/40YR19 rear)
• Brembo® braking system with 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors, 42mm four-piston fixed front calipers (red), 13.0-inch ventilated rear rotors, 32mm+28mm four-piston fixed rear calipers (red)
• Track-tuned suspension (higher-rate coil springs, higher-control shock absorbers, 25mm front stabilizer bar, 22mm rear stabilizer bar, front strut brace)
• Torsen-type limited-slip differential
• R-Spec badging
• Quick-ratio hydraulic steering (2.7 turns lock-to-lock)
• Tire Pressure Monitoring System
• Front, side, side air curtain air bags
• Active front head restraints
• Driver’s lumbar support
• Air conditioning
• Remote keyless entry system
• Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
• Power windows (one-touch up and down), door locks and mirrors
• AM/FM/XM/MP3/CD audio system with six speakers
• iPod/USB/Aux jack connectivity
• Projector beam headlamps
• Lightweight temporary spare with aluminum wheel (T135/80D18)
• Note: Automatic transmission not available with R-Spec

Looks like a good bit of competition to add to the mid $20k sport compacts, provided that the base model can handle too.

I can't say that its pretty though...

I will be test driving this pretty much as soon as possible. I have strong reservations about buying a Hyundai, but with the right warranty, and if this thing handles well, it's going to be tempting.

What-Spec, now?

Now, that's an interesting option. Definitely looking forward to looking at one.

I'll mimic danoff. I want a chance behind one of these babies, particularly, the Track spec in 6-speed.

As for the tuners, that should really help sell this car. Lord knows what Nissan will be doing to its sports cars after the GT-R, Honda has to rely on Mugen to set their sports cars up, and who knows if even Toyota will ever build another sporty car again.

It's priced to be a budget sports car yet from everything I've heard it seems like it's supposed to be a sweet machine. Intriguing.

I hope some aftermarket outfit makes blacked-out headlight surrounds, because the jeweled headlights are one of the few things that annoy me about this car (and the silly rear quarter window).

Other than that, good on Hyundai – hope they actually got the handling right.

Blacked out headlights are factory standard on the track models. Also, the car has the same 2.0 head as the mitsu evos. That should give it an advantage fir tuning.

The only thing I don't like is that there is no sunroof delete on the track model. And if you go with a turbo track you're stuck with red seat inserts.

Can you link to a picture of the Track model? I can’t seem to find any.

Here's one in a port in California:

Tracks have the spoiler, black headlights and the blacked out front grill(s). The 3.8 GT also has black lights. Or at least the option for them.

How will the turbo 4 be handled? Is it just lazy forced induction like the original Cobalt SS, or is it from the VW school of forced induction (decent horsepower, diesel torque curve)?

The 2.0T model seems like an excellent value, I have to admit. I'm looking forward to seeing one up close if I end up going to Chicago (right now, its a maybe). I'm a bit more weary about the V6 model than the turbo, mainly because it seems somewhat expensive compared to the rest of the competition out there. Performance figures will be interesting, however. I'm assuming that they are chasing after the 370Z, not the Mustang, and my guess is that a lot of this is going to play out on chassis tune and curb weights.

This could take the title away from the Mustang GT as my best bang-for-buck coupe available. We'll have to wait and see.

That's not an R-spec. Check that sunroof. It's a Track with an R-spec badge. They blacked out the windows because they don't want to show the interior. The R-spec won't have bluetooth or cruise control, so there'll be no buttons on the wheel.

I must say, this car is going to make me go into a Hyundai dealership for the firs time.

Very nice. This is the first Hyundai I've ever genuinely appreciated (bar the i30) and damn is it good. Hyundai are definitely improving their game in terms of quality and for once I wouldn't mind the Korean manufacturer to keep producing more. 👍

Yeah, the Genesis sedan is the N.American Car of the Year and also the Canadian CotY. I wonder if this Coupe will win next year's too.

(and the silly rear quarter window).

Given how blasted difficult it is to see out of the back of a lot of modern "stylish" cars, I'm actually glad one manufacturer is thinking about how hard it is to merge into traffic.

No sunroof delete? Agh. They should at least offer an alternative... maybe remove the mechanism and put in a manual carbon-fiber insert?

The 2.0 head is still the same? Sure? This is now two or three generations removed from the old 2.0s... while there may still be similarities with the old 4G63, I wouldn't count on everything being a direct swap, anymore... well... I guess we'll know when we see it... or do you mean that this is part of the World engine program that spawned the 4B11?

--

From on-paper, it looks like they're going with fairly modern tuning... wide torque-band (Hyundai knows a lot about variable geometry turbos... they use them in nearly all their diesels), conservative top end... just to distance it from the 3.8. I'd have expected them to quote 250 hp for the track model, at least, just to give people a reason to spec up. As it is... just over $1000 to the V6, which has much more torque and hp? Doesn't work.

This is supposedly the engine from the Sonata with a turbo slapped one, so in theory it would have any aftermarket that that engine has.
That being said, the only aftermarket I'm aware of for that engine is the Mopar bits Dodge sells. Which in itself (taking your Hyundai to a Dodge dealer for parts installation) would be hilarious.

Yeah, I actually like the rear quarter glass. It balances out the lines of the car and makes it more parallel to the ground.

The only way to not have a sunroof is by getting a base model of either engine or a R-spec turbo. I'm sure you could do a CF insert, but I'm interested in sunroof-less for headroom, so an insert would be pointless.

Yes, I read that some shop confirmed the engine head is the same as the one in the evo 8-10. 4B11 is it. Buschur racing is an evo tuner and they're working on a gen. They're a vendor at genesisforums.org so you can go there to get more info. Basically, the Coupe should have the same aftermarket engine support that the Evos have.

The track model has all the goodies, though. Performance and comfort. That's why the gap is small between it and the base V6. The R-spec is going to be just the performace parts and will come in at only 23k.

Good god this is awsome news! I love this thing, and I can't wait to see one in person. Give me the V6 with a proper 6spd manual. Anyone heard any clear exhaust noise from the V6?

I was never a fan of Hyundai cars , but this thing gets my attention , very nice car for the price.

The black one pictured in thread #14 is hot.

Thought you'd never ask :D :

4B11 head? Awesome. So you can have a heavy, RWD coupe with over 300 hp and no torque... no... wait...

All sarcasm aside, that's great news... a RWD 2.0 turbo... in the US... with aftermarket support. It's something Nissan denied enthusiasts by stuffing the KA24DE into the US-market 240SX instead of the SR20DET. The Genesis Coupe could make a killing on the market with buyers sizing down from more expensive metal or buyers looking for RWD performance at this price point.

 Yeah, I know. Better make that turbo a twin scroll, eh?

And then there's the fresh V6 made in Alerbamer that's got nasty headers and a crimped Y-pipe. :ill: I read that the Koreans are getting sick horsepower gains just from an IHE upgrade.

Can someone put all in one post, the prices of the Genesis Coupe Track/R-Spec models (in 4cyl and V6 guise), the Camaro (possibly RS?) V6 and V8, the Mustang V6 and V8, and the Challenger V6 and V8? Any other sports coupes in this category too?

Edit: The Genesis with sports exhaust in the video Omnis posted sounds b-e-a-utiful.:)

Edit 2: Did it myself.:)

Base Camaro LS V6: $22,995
Camaro RS V6: $26,400
Camaro SS: $30,995
Base Nissan 370Z: $29,930
Nissan 370Z Touring: $34,460
Base Mustang V6: $21,845
Mustang GT: $27,995
Base Challenger V6: $22,545
Challenger SRT8: $39,995
Challenger R/T: $29,995
Base Genesis Coupe 2.0T: $22,000
Genesis 2.0T R-Spec: $23,750
Genesis 3.8 Track: $29,500

You may want to add the Dodge Challenger R/T to that list, removing the SRT-8. The R/T has an MSRP of $29,995 and I don't believe the Track Pack is all that much of an add on.
