Genki Announces Shutokou Battle Xtreme, Coming to iOS and Android this Month

Genki sort of had it coming by having Shutokou Battle X being a 360 exclusive only. The first Xbox sold terribly in Japan, what makes anyone in Genki think that the 360 will be any better?
Considering they had strong publisher at their side (Ubisoft) who launched the game on all four markets, it is possible they expected to compensate low sales in Japan with profits from USA and Europe where Xbox was far more popular. SBX was sold in around 90 thousand copies in USA alone, if I'm not mistaken. That's still very low, but far more than what they sold in Japan.

Besides, PS3 wasn't available when SBX got released, it came out a month or two later I think. PS2 didn't have online, and they hadn't had much success on PC either (SB Online never got out).

I just hope that it's friendly to medium spec and low spec phones because I haven't bought a new phone yet and I'll probably have to wait until May or June to get one so yeah.
My worst fear at this point is that Shutokou Battle will just be another "one button" racing game like CSR or F&F, where you don't have much freedom over movement besides forwards.
(And IAP's are shoved in your face)
Now that's what I'm fearing. Aside from Genki pulling off a "C1GP Battle" skit and IAPs (if they are having IAPs, then take NFS No Limits as a guide on balancing IAPs), this is my biggest fear for SB:X. Considering that most SB games take place from Tokyo highways and with the latest one on mobile phones, I have a feeling that this might be the case but I wouldn't bet on it though.

Genki's Twitter posted this a few hours ago in reply to a tweet asking about the game:

ジャンルとしてアナウンスしているのは「レーシングバトルARPG」ですね。

Google translate it as:

It is "Racing Battle ARPG" that announces as a genre.

Not exactly sure what it is, but what we do know is that an ARPG game emphasizes real time actions where the player has direct control over characters, or in this case, cars. Take that as you will.

I think this is the list of phones that will be supported. And Google translation from this page says (among some other things):

Handling is the key to driving in the capital high!
Brilliant overtaking from slipstream,
Block competitors trying to overtake,
Cornering at attack point · · ·
All of it is determined by handling technique by screen slide.
Make full use of the heterogeneous speed obtained at Nitro, the rocket start, be the champion of the capital high!

Surely genki can see how any want a return to console, they can't be that naive can they? I know they may be struggling for cash but won't the support proove to them that it's more than just a risk and that it's a gamble that would pay of if there smart about how they did it?
I don't think it's that they're naive, more so that they're trying to play it smart. Slow and steady. There's little "want" for a console game, it was a relatively obscure title on consoles in the past. The only way I knew about it was because I randomly saw it at the gamestore one day. Never, ever heard anything from news outlets on it. It's a niche title, with an even smaller following than plenty of other games within the same genre.

So I assume it should act like Drift Spirits, where the car accelerates and turns on its own but you must press a button (wheel-thing) to "drift" at the right time?

But you know what, I personally enjoyed Drift Spirits. But haven't gotten to play it since its shutdown.

The Japan server is still very active. 250k players participating in the current event.

Edit: It's actually closer to 300k

I got over drift spirits so quick simply by the lack of control.

It's actually quite a challenging game because of the precision required to hit the marks, especially when going up against a faster opponent. But yes, there's no actual drifting skills involved.

I remember playing drift spirits, the standard GT-R R34 was my main car, not to mention I have various other cars that had many upgrades to them. It was fun for a short time, but I didn't get much into it as much as TXR.

It's quite funny because to be able to drift a gtr in real life, it needs tremendous entry speed into a corner being an awd and even still, can't pull the angles of an fr car. A wrx or an Evo can slide better than a gtr. Unless of course you convert it to an fr then it's a whole different ball game. The car is to heavy still though, much better for grip driving, that's where it comes into its own. You want to drift a skyline, go the gts.

My Xperia Z3 + (Z4 in Japan) is supported, so I'll give it a try out of curiosity. I'm not really into mobile gaming for control purposes.

Since the announcement of Shutokou Battle Xtreme, I haven't shared my thoughts on the reveal yet as well as everyone's reaction to the announcement so I might as well do it now.

I see that a couple of people on here have an issue with it being mobile. Thing is, they don't understand. Genki is a very small company that has made little success in the mainstream media. They don't have the money to make a new game on console so they have to start off small with a mobile game. Interesting enough, this isn't their first TXR mobile game as they have made a mobile TXR game before sometime around 2011. The one thing I notice they've managed to achieve this time with their second mobile TXR game from all their fund raising is that the new one now has license vehicles while the first one didn't. Great!

I hope Genki can make enough money from this to kickstart a console title. While it did disappointed me a little to hear it being a mobile title, I'd rather hear this than Namco announcing another mobile Ridge Racer title *C'mon Namco, I'm pretty sure you have the money for a console Ridge Racer title, now stop milking the franchise with more mobile titles.* because Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a game that we've been waiting long enough to come back and Genki worked their butt off from all the fund raising to bring this series back from the dead. A new mobile Ridge Racer title is nothing interesting and with all the money Namco is wasting on new Ridge Racer mobile titles, they could of been using that towards a console title.

On Namco and RR, I honestly think we won't be seeing another Ridge Racer title on an actual, high powered console for a very long time.

They decided to pull a fast one on consumers with that disgusting Vita RR game, and critics and consumers rightfully destroyed it. Now, with egg on their face, they've put the series on the backburner. Besides, why go back to their staple series in Ridge Racer, when they can make beaucoup bucks publishing Dark Souls/Bloodborne?

Namcos main focus is project cars and with the second one in full production Iam glad there working on such a more realistic concept than ridge racer tbh, but that's my opinion.

I was meaning in a more general sense, but it makes sense that their new money maker in terms of racing is Project CARS.

Ouch, so my predictions with this being a mobile game have come true *sigh*. Not going to touch this - I've learned my lesson with NFS No Limits. Mobile = microtransaction hell.

My only consolation would be this might prove popular and rake in the money, so Genki could hopefully create a proper console/PC game for next time. Until then, I wonder if someone can crack the .apk and transfer the tracks to AC? ;)

And this is why Genki might not be able to afford a console port.

I might have read it wrong

^Not talking about pirating the game. Just porting the tracks over to Assetto on PC (console version doesn't even have mods). Which could also be seen as copyright ingfringing mind you, but in general ripped mods are always a grey area (unless you sell them, in which case it's definitely wrong).

In any case, that's probably still too optimistic from me. I doubt a mobile game is going to have the full Shutokou expressway map. Probably just small bits and look alike roads here and there. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Someone mentioned earlier that a smart move for a console release would've been to team up with bandai namco who already have the latest versions of the game data and roads and just port the arcade version to a console. I can't imagine it would've been that more expensive than fully creating even a mobile game from scratch. It would've given genki the exposure needed but I guess namco is fully occupied with project cars 2 as they have admitted to falling behind abit on schedule with that and hope for a "septemberish" release for ps4 and xb1, defiantly hanging out for that.

Off-topic: How different Kaido Racer (KB: Chain Reaction) is from Kaido Racer 2 (TXRD2) in terms of car handling? I was watching some videos lately, and it seems it could be a bit better.

The PS2 was a bespoke platform. It's not something that could easily be fully emulated via software. There's a reason only the early models of PS3 could play PS2 games: they literally had the CPU and GPU of the PS2 inside.
All of the PS2 Classics on PSN were done with software emulation. The emulator generally didn't run very well with the games that weren't officially released, but the PS3 it ran on also isn't the PS4.

That being said, I'd be surprised if the PS2 rereleases on PS4 are actually emulation.

This is something I've been wondering for a while, I'd rather have a solid answer than take the gamble am just buy the game
