GLI is garbage... trading it in about 3 weeks...

as said before, M3

This generation in the $20k's is available, but I recommend PPI's done on any you look at. While many are still perfectly good cars for the mileage most have at this price, there are just as many that are on verge of Inspection I/II & those are not cheap for people who can only just afford a $20,000 vehicle.

For the E46, I would suggest being able to afford a $25-30,000 car & then picking up a $20,000 model. A lot of these E46s bite people in the ass when they need servicing.

Well I'm glad that my GTI isn't the worst MKV on the road for reliability issues. That car sounds like a nightmare. Rode hard and put away wet for sure. Shame you found one that just doesn't work though.

Another suggestion to make things more complicated is the WRX. You might be able to find an 09+ with the 265 hp even. Maybe an old Leggy GT too if you can find one that isn't too beat up.

But yeah, I'd be more than happy with an MS3, GTO or WRX.

WRX or M3 would be my choices.

How are your chances of finding a WRX STi for that price? Can't really argue with ~300hp and AWD.

*DISCLAIMER: The below post contains my opinion and it is opinion only. Feel free to consider or disregard my suggestion. The 05 - 09 Mustang GT and S2000 are both fine options, I'm only suggesting an alternative to the two.*

Personally? I'd suggest a 2003-2004 Mustang Cobra.

Okay, it's older than what you're looking for, granted. It's not the updated body style, granted. And yes, I'm a little biased toward the SN95 Mustangs, as you can tell by my sig.

Here's the kicker though. The 2003 - 2004 Mustang Cobras dyno at 380-ish hp at the rear wheels. They were seriously underrated by FoMoCo. Minor tuning will push them to over 400 hp no sweat.

Out of the box they are 12-second capable cars. They pull .90 g on the skidpad.

Stock they come with a Tremec 6-speed manual and an independent rear suspension.

And, if you look, you can find them for right around your budget mark.

It's just a suggestion, it's your money, and I say go for whatever makes you happy.
I bet he'll kill himself with a Cobra
I beat 05-09's on a regular basis and my car is nearly 45 years old with a few light engine mods on a 289 (4.7L). The 4.6's were complete jokes for those years.
How much power is your '67 (guess) making? Sounds like a sweet car

Explain your definition of fast.

+1

Might I suggest an RX-8? Almost as fast the S2000 (nothing in it really, mostly down to the driver) and it is substantially more practical. Mileage would be about equal to a V8 Mustang. Extra oil (yes they do burn oil) might run you an extra $30 per year (just by a big 5 quart jug once a year, should be more than enough)

-Extremely good handling. Subjectively I mean. Steering feel and balance is truly magical
-Beautiful sound (as long as you keep the stock exhaust, or get a nice catback, such as racing beat)
-Very good looks. I mean, especially with a drop and nice set of wheels, come on:
P1010741.jpg

-Great interior (especially the face-lift cars)
-Reliable (only real issues were early-production oil starvation, which was fixed on all effected and corrected for production)

I'm planning to get an R3 model when I get out of school. If there isn't a new rotary car out that is :)

If you are spoiled by late model VW interiors, any Ford pre-2009 is just not going to be acceptable. We've got a 2003 Mach 1, and while it is a fantastic car, the interior is hopelessly poor. The 2011 cars are considerably improved, however.

The RX-8 is awesome. I'm strongly tempted to get one as my next car if I can get over the atrocious fuel efficiency. The handling is really something else. It feels so light on its feet yet the ride isn't punishing (we're talking the "normal" RX-8s). The engine revs 'til the cows come home, but exceptionally smoothly. And I think the cockpit is a great place to spend time. Great car, and very easy to find low mileage ones on the cheap.

Issues? Yeah, rotaries consume oil. This is normal. You must check it often, however. Mileage sucks if you drive the car the way it's meant to be driven. And there's just no low end torque. Don't expect to win any drag races. I like the way it looks, but it's not for everyone.

The S2000 is awesome too though, and a great choice if you want more excitement in your daily drive. That engine at WOT sounds incredible, and with the top down it can get the heart racing. It's a 2-seater, so only you can decide if it's practical for you. My 4-seasons daily driver is a Miata though, and I manage just fine.

My *ideal* car is a Miata. Sadly not a Miata produced by Mazda at the moment. Because in my eyes, it should be offered as a Fixed-roof coupe and with a 13b-MPS (Renesis) A 230bhp Miata coupe revving to 9,000rpm. That is what dreams are made of right there.

You mean a new RX-7?

There's always one, and I hate to be that one, but how exactly can a 20 year old afford $20K for a car?

It isn't hard, I'm 24 and I've had 3 brand new vehicles. My current car was $26,000 and I have no problem making payments on it. You just budget you money and finance the car. A $20,000 car would run you in the neighbourhood of $350 a month if you put down $3,000.

You could easily cut out going out to eat and recoup $350 per month.

On the subject of car though, I'd say get an M3. You already like German cars and are into the whole Euro scene, so just stick with that. The Mustang and S2000 are both good, but that generation Mustang isn't nearly as good as the newer ones and I think a S2000 would get annoying as a daily pretty quick due to it's lack of space to put crap.

👍 eSZee. Wifey wants a WRX or possibly a 4th gen Legacy GT. It's too bad the 5th gen GT lost its enthusiast charm.

I like the beefyness of the current one.
I would get a Legacy SpecB if I was her. If that's hard to find then a legacy wagon will do as well.

 RX-8.

Worse gas mileage, slower, more of a hassle to work on, and it even FLOODS.

Everyone I know that has had an RX-8 has sold it after driving an E36 M3 around. Fact. Why? Torque. And them MPGs. And not burning oil by design.

I'm also in support of the E36 M3. And to whoever said it is impossible to find unmolested ones anymore obviously hasn't looked very hard.

And on another note, it's a shame about your VW. Judging by what has been said in here, it looks like my Corrado has been more reliable. Good luck finding something new. 👍

BMWs are quality cars. I think the worst thing you can say about the E36 is to remember you're buying an older car. You might find one that hasn't been molested, but you may need to invest in bushings/bump stops/hoses/etc that just eventually wear with age.

How about a Miata? :) For $20,000 you can get a very recent low-mileage Miata and make it perform/look like this:

No way that for 20K you can get an NC and get it looking like that. Maybe an NA or NB but in engine mods, safety mods, and body mods you can easily get very close to 20k even in an NA (including car and labor)

E36: Ugliest 3 series BMW. Fact. Also, from a technical standpoint (not a financial one), the worst M3 money can buy, especially the neutered US-spec version. Who wants to spend money for BMW parts? I certainly don't.

EFI rotaries rarely flood. I know mine hasn't yet in the 3 years I've owned it.

My wife and I own an RX-8 and it is anything but reliable. And it is hideously slow. The S2000 is a much better car all around. Strongly do not recommend an RX-8 to anyone.

Looks are subjective and pointless to argue so how can you say it's fact?

You can't use words like autotragic and expect people to have a serious discussion with you.

And which of those are 2006 or newer? Which would still have warranty?

Automatic = autotragic It's a fairly common euphemism...and quite fitting in the case of the RX-8, as it is a tragedy.

Am I the only one that is  at this thread?

Can we give the guy a chance to respond before everyone just starts arguing over cars?
