I see virtually no reason that modern trucks need the enormous height and ground clearance that they have. Nobody takes these things rock crawling - worst case scenario they pull out of their suburban driveway and head for a construction site with a gravel parking lot. If they really need the ground clearance they can buy a lifted, big-tired FX4 or Z71. That's what they used to do, but nowadays the two-wheel drive versions are so cheap looking that nobody wants to be seen in one, just to convince people to spend the extra money on the nicer versions that are bigger, taller, shinier, and have 4WD standard.
This is really it too. Trucks also aren't built to the same standards they once were. Yes they have added comforts but personally I think they are getting a bit too luxurious, and it's taking away from it being a truck. iIve said this before though.

I don't agree with the ground clearance thing though, that hasn't really changed much in 25 years or so.

They really don't need to be bigger than this, and this maybe even needs to drop slightly.

I'm 5'8" and my head is about halfway to 3/4 of the way up the window. Perfect. No bigger please, except for the factory highboys. But that's different.

I agree 100% even here out west when I had a 4x4 I almost never needed the ground clearance hell I go to the same places in a Subaru AWD that I used to in a 4x4 truck.

Yeah but I'd be you weren't going hardcore when you were playing either, rock crawling and mudding and all that. Ground clearance is very important...you can only go as deep as the bottom of your differential.

But do you really need to go off road? Buy a 4 wheeler, instead of a $50,000 truck. Most people don't agree though and I understand. I can see a contractor or someone else in a similar workforce needing that truck but the general population doesn't need it.

I have an ATV. In fact I have an ATV and a Go cart and at one time had 2 ATV's alone with our truck.

Wheeling in a truck is just plain fun. Kickin' up mud, throwing stones, ripping through creeks and rivers, plowing throw thick, heavy snow, going places where most other vehicles can't...its just fun. If you've never tried it, I'd recommend it. But then again I'm not the kind of guy who will baby the snot out of one either. Personally, I can't see a new one taking that kind of abusing and still maintaining their reliability like the old ones. There is simply too much electronic garbage.

I will agree though that these days most people just don't care anymore. But I'm like my dad, and refuse to buy a new one because of this.

I wanna know why so many American men suffer from small dick syndrome these days. Everything's gotta be bigger and taller and unweildy. Whatever happened to owning a tiny Japanese sports car because you're comfortable with your manhood?

The man in the white Celica acknowledges @Keef in the tiny white RX-7.

But I wouldn't mind owning a new Colorado...

That's a tired, old stereotype you're using there.

I agree. Nobody needs a vehicle that big (and ugly). Nobody.

It's ridiculous how high the front of trucks are now. Especially with the gigantic headlights they now have, it's always shining very brightly directly in my rearview mirror, and i don't drive that small or low of a car.

Just like the stereotypes you use for the Prius.

I agree. They sit WAY too high in the front. Overall they need to shrink. I think it makes life a lot easier and the link I posted is just some of the things. Plus, with a lower hood, climbing into the engine bay for maintenance is a bit easier.

I'm sorry, but this is just way too bulky and big, even for me, and I like big trucks. What ever happened to the smaller square bodied truck.

Now before anyone jumps down my throat for posting old ones in teh regular cab form...99% of the time regular cab was standard and nowadays tough to get for the most part. Yes, they had extended and quad quad versions with up to an 8 foot bed, but they still aren't at the magnitude these things out now are.

A lot of the bulk in the bodywork is safety-aero-function, but the height from ground to doorsill is the big thing, and even as recently as 2005 wasn't horrible. When nerf bars are needed on the bottom-dollar version, something has gone askew.

I think a lot of the aero stuff can be shrunk honestly. As I said before the clearance hasn't hanged a whole lot, its the rest of the vehicle that got massive.

I wasn't aware I had a small penis, please don't tell my wife.

My truck really isn't that big,

Honestly though, why do you care what other people decide to spend their money on? I know quite a few guys who own new Dodge trucks (and they are damn nice too) and while I've never seen their penis' I'm quite sure they didn't buy them to compensate for something. Some people like diesel trucks, some people like sports cars, why insult someone for being passionate about something you don't like?

You do understand that's how the automotive work works right? Pretty much every car has a stereotype, whether it's right or wrong.

I always assumed that those were only regurgitated by fools or just plain ignorant people, Keef certainly didn't strike me as either.

Go into any thread about electric or hybrid cars. The stereotype that all those drivers a liberal douches is alive and well. I think it's just something that comes with car culture, whether right or wrong.

I live in suburban Dayton, a melting pot for the best and worst the city and country have to offer. Stereotypes abound for various groups of car people. You've got the rednecks with their lifted, stacked diesel trucks, the city cowboys who impress girls at the club with their never-been-dirty HD pickup, the guys from Middletown with the fast Mustangs and Camaros, the guys from the east side with their V8-swapped drift cars who do burnouts in their driveway (like a boss), the Euro kids with their nice VWs and BMWs and maxed out credit cards, the Euro kids who forgot they don't have money and now own a broken VW or BMW, the Honda kids who aren't allowed at the meets anymore because the rest of us grew up and got big boy cars and kicked them out, etc.

It's the Midwest man, we've got stereotypes for everybody. It just so happens that diesel truck assholes blow soot into my open window more often than not.

Reaper concept, possible to take down the Raptor. The Reaper will offer a Fox Racing suspension system, supercharged V8 and a Corsa exhaust system, in addition to a high-clearance bumper, grille and hood, and 17-inch headlock wheels with off-road tires.

At the moment, there really isn’t a high-performance pickup truck that comes close to competing with the Ford Raptor, but a team from Southern Comfort Automotive has developed a Chevy rendition that could step up to the plate.

The “Reaper” is is scheduled to be revealed at the NADA Convention Center in New Orleans, and according to GM Authority, the truck was developed with help from Ligenfelter Performance Engineering and Fox Racing.

There isn’t much information given in this teaser video, and if anything, it leaves us with more questions, but it looks like we’ll have to wait for the official specs.

$5 says It will be like the Chevy SS truck that was supposed to be a Lightning competitor and the production version was watered down and lame.

The Reaper is hideous, although I'll be curious to see one close up assuming Mr. L gets one in his collection.

The front end wouldn't be so bad if they chopped off the excess above the grill and shrunk the lights to fit around it.

Thing is, the GM guys really want a Raptor competitor. Last I had heard, it was GMC that was probably going to get the factory support and do one themselves, but this certainly will keep the Chevrolet guys happy.

But, in my opinion, I'd rather see GM make the effort for an off-road truck on a new version of the Colorado/Canyon as a spin of the old ZR2 designation. They were pretty capable in their time, and with the appropriate equipment, I see no reason why they wouldn't be today. If they offered the ZR2 with the diesel, man, they could really ring some bells with the off-road community.

That thing is just ugly!

And it want to go compete with the Raptor....

Sadly, I can't see the new Raptor looking much better seeing how ugly the new F-150 is(granted it can't be worse than that monstrosity). Unfortunately I'll probably see plenty of both as I've seen a fair amount of Raptor's driving around.

I would rather have something factory then made by a third party cause when things start to break they blame each other and you have to pay for the repairs.

That a good idea. 👍 there really notthing like that on the market right now, only thing that may come is from Toyota. They coming out with "TRD Pro" next week at Chicago Auto show for the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner, I'm not sure if it going to be performance oriented or just a body kit.

All I see are eight-lug wheels, a big chrome bumper, and that the open-split in the grill has been closed up...and it helps a lot. I guess simpler comes to mind, though the color does work in it's favor, but if the 1500 gets a 4, this gets a solid 6. If they get rid of the stupid bulges in the hood, I'll go to 7-8 territory.
