Gran Turismo 5 Prologue vs rFactor

I'm sure with the higher end graphics card for the PC there is no contest who can perform better. But when youre driving in a car moving fast all the details on the track becomes mute for argument since your really not paying attention to the details anymore but to the details on what you are focused on like the car ahead of you or the dashboard in the car if you are using the cockpit view so the whole point of the matter goes to which graphics that show sharper that is more important when racing since PS3 is still handicaped or limited compared to a PC.

I kinda disagree, the track graphics are extermely important to me. When I upgraded my PC and went from medium to low settings all the way up to very high/max settings with 4x AA in GTR2 and GTR evolution, it made a massive difference to me and increased my "immersion" in the game by a lot. It also still annoys me how there's no shadows from trees on most tracks (except brands hatch indy). Things like shadows on the tracks, track textures, and the general environment around the track (trees, buildings, etc) really add to my immersion in a racing sim.

EDIT: Though I do agree about the sharpness being very important too. ;)

The cockpit view graphics are obviously important too, but no more important to me than the environment (not saying they're less important either :P but the track is too often neglected). The graphics of other vehicles on the track is also important, but only as much so as they fit within the environment, if the cars are extremely detailed compared to the environment, they will stand out unnaturally.

I'm sorry, but after watching those two videos anyone thinks that Rfactor looks better than GT5P needs their eyes tested, thats after you fill a sick back from the motion sickness inducing "camera work"

rFactor hands down wins!!!

GT5P certainly looks better but rFactor has better physics, more user friendly options, excellent online gameplay (at least for me), and certainly the most varied and best mods available!

Congratulations to rFactor!
:)
you want a cookie?

No, I didn't design rFactor, silly little man! :)
The cookie(s) should go to rFactor!
:)

Can I just say: with a shaky cam like this onboard video of GT5:P looks much nicer :D

And ontopic: holy crap rFactor's graphics are bad! I don't understand how you can even begin to compare these two games... Look at the rear view mirror, you can literally count the edges on it. Same for the air valves (sorry I don't even know how to say that in my native language, but you know what I mean). There is so little detail, everywhere!

Yes, you can see far ahead. Yes, the gauges work (wow...) Yes, the signs next to the road are pretty detailed. But the whole environment seems to be make out of cardboard or something :indiff:

There are no advanced lighting effects at all! The whole thing looks like it's made from the same material and seems kind of ... dull.

EDIT:

Oh yeah: and the podium flickers at 3.06 in the rFactor vid.

In general: the game engine looks to be from 2002 or something with some new effects added. But overall the graphics are quite poor.

And @ Patrocles: Oh behave ;) As stated in the first post, it's a graphical comparison only. I'm not saying rFactor isn't a good sim, not at all. But the graphics aren't up to date anymore.

Gran Turismo is almost perfect. The photo realstic graphics can make it look real especially when you see a Mercedez Benz SL55 over take you :)

Just let down by aliasing (jaggie lines) which one user posted is disgusting to look at.

Not PD's fault. Just hardware limitation.
So that is one fault compared to many faults on Rfactor.

The system could have done with another 256mb of video ram. That would have helped.

Rfactor is quite an old game now so it's not really appropriate to compare it to GT5P. You can do that once Rfactor 2 is released.

Yeah, also the F430 is a mod, so its only ever going to look as good as the person who made it is willing to put in the time. And rFactor is old, almost 4 years old, it was around a year before the PS3 itself was out let alone GT5P, so its not far to compare it to current gen console games. Lighting is average and textures are only as good as the modders who made them (though I think some tracks look pretty nice with good textures).

rFactor 2 should be pretty sweet, though I'm sceptical about the track quality, when most tracks are community mods, I dont think the community is willing to put in the time and effort to create beautiful textures and scenery like a company being paid to make it.

I still dont own GT5P (bloody car broke down and ate the money I was going to use to buy a PS3 these holidays :() but from all the high res screenshots I've seen, like these ones, I've been pretty unimpressed with the environments. I like driving through detailed, scenic, not jaggy tracks :P In GTR evo I like to drive the 'ring and the STCC tracks because they have nicer scenery. Also I crank up the antialiasing, it makes a huge difference. The main thing I notice when I go from playing on my new computer to my old computer (so my friend can also play) is the jaggies and general lack of sharpness offered by antialiasing and anisotropic filtering.

good point. Yes, rFactor was released almost 4 years ago and graphics have improved dramatically when you compare this PC sim to the PS3 game of GT5P!

GT wins hands down on graphics.

Unfortunately, that's about where it's plus points end...over rFactor anyway...

P.s. I run rFactor on full settings on a huge resolution on my 37" 1080p screen. My PC cost £750.
