I think the "major announcement" will just be showing us something we already know is there but that they just haven't showed yet... like maybe some WRC tracks or NASCAR action... maybe showing a race with multiple cars showing damage etc...

Okay, some guesses:
E³ Concept Video>GamesCom playable demo with damage>TGS playable demo with either night racing, weather, or both

E³ Concept Video>GamesCom playable demo with damage>TGS release ;) or releasedate

E³ Concept Video>GamesCom playable demo with damage>TGS playable demo on PSN

These would be "Major Advancements" imo.

They are all pretty plausible. I expect another video with the release date at the very end. In the video should be some new cars, new tracks, and some weather. Yea, not just sun and clouds. I want to Hurricane Katrina rain and stuff like that. Maybe an F5 tornado or a 9.8 earthquake? You know?

Im expecting the full monty at TGS and what I mean by this is a presentation which will include release date, full details of game i.e tracks, online features etc.

Im saying this because why wouldn't they make this announcement. This is the last major gaming convention of the year and the perfect showcase to make this announcement. You can see Sonys business plan, make an announcement of the price cut, PS3 slim at Gamescom to get punters interested. At TGS they make the announcement of GT5 to finally persuade the public to buy a PS3 and lets face it no other game franchise will have this effect on console sales.

Personally I feel Sony have this strategy spot on. Makes no sense to release all your major announcements at just one gaming convention but instead release this in stages i.e E3, Gamescom, TGS. The momentum as we approach xmas is most certainly with the PS3 rather than the Xbox 360. I am 99.9% convinced GT5 will be released in a bundle with the PS3 on Dec 4th and this is a date I have been saying for ages. I seriously doubt GT5 will be released in Q1 2010 as this would be disastrous for Sonys PS3 sales. During a recession there is only one time in the year when people will still spend money and this happens to be xmas. The peak xmas shopping period is between 27th Nov- 5th Dec which is why I suggest Dec 4th.

I want a release date,of december 4th at the latest..I dont want a track list or car list really, wouldnt mind a few screenshots of the CURRENT/FINAL build showing a NEW car with a lot of damage on,driving round the top gear track,in the wet

I'd have to slightly disagree, only that really FM3 has gathered a reasonable amount of momentum, and PD could have quashed that quite easily with a slight PR attack over the last month or two..

I don't think it makes good business sense to let your competition (if that's what FM is to some people) get too much limelight and never rest on your laurels..

You are however right about Christmas sales, I'll certainly be getting a PS3 Slim + GT5 to go alongside FM3, it is going to sell many systems over Christmas.. lets hope Sony keep the momentum going and engage MS into being more competitive, we consumers win in the end!

All out details, like telling your homie about that girl last friday, ALL OUT.

I wonder how many pages will be clocked in this thread by the time TGS actually goes down ahaha.

Perfectly said. +1 👍

Kazunori Yamauchi said it himself "The next major advancement for GT5 will be at TGS". First, we had the announcement that GT5 was being made 5 years ago. Then, at E3 2009, the announcement trailer [5 years later :sly:] was shown and then the playable demo was revealed at GamesCom. The only "major" thing left to do is announce the release date and the full features list. That is how it's always been done in the realm of game development, using those same 4 steps.

And phil-t - it is excellent business savvy for Sony to combat the launch of Forza 3 and Microsoft's other holiday titles with Gran Turismo 5 and a GT5 PS3 Slim bundle. Polyphony Digital started the whole racing game scene and they have the benefit of being the best out there, so resting on their laurels is afforded to them by the quality of their games speaking for themselves - no drawn-out advertising period is necessary.

Turn 10 has Che Chou and Dan Greenawalt, who seem tho think that FM3 can't speak for itself - so they speak in it's stead. GT5 is going to be a guaranteed hit from a company with over 10 years of experience - we all know the Gran Turismo pedigree, so all that PD and Sony have to do is merely announce the release date and then the hype train starts rolling. GT5 doesn't even need advertisements to sell well - the word of mouth alone and the dedicated fanbase will ensure astounding sales.

Not trying to debate anything, just stating facts. :D

maybe they've finally fixed the wrong weight on Volvo 240, AW11 NA/SC, Alpines etc..?

Perhaps they've fixed the rev counter on the Merc SL55?

I hope we get some decent real world tracks to compliment Nurb, Suzuka and Laguna Seca.

Thousand cars is great and I love the fantasy tracks like Apricot hill and midfield raceway but Bathurst and Spa would be really interesting.

Hi Phil.

When I refer to momentum I mean the PS3 in general rather than just GT5. Since the PS3 was released the main focus for the gaming world has been the Blu ray player. I've lost count how many times i've read "I only use my PS3 for Blu Ray". However this xmas this has changed because Sony have some incredible games coming up and the combination of this with the price cut and applications such as Home, Vidzone etc means the momentum is in Sonys favour. I've owned the 360 since launch and I feel the 360 is beginning to look dated with little progression, although this discussion is for another thread.

Back to FM3 and without trying to sound like a fanboy (which im not as I will buy both) there is a big difference between the Forza franchise and Gran Turismo franchise. You see Turn 10 and MS need to promote FM3 to prevent many Xbox 360 racers buying a PS3 and moving to GT5. You can see this in the way Turn 10 promoted FM3 at E3 and is also the reason why Che tried to bribe the community in a meaningless poll. The sales of FM & GT clearly highlight this. There is no doubt in my mind that Turn10/MS fear GT5 and to be honest they would be fools if they didn't. The sales of the GT franchise (52 million copies sold) is what developers can only dream about!

The Gran Turismo franchise is one of those extremely rare franchises where you don't really need to advertise and can guarantee it will be a success just based on the strength of the name. The only other franchises that can do this is GTA, Halo, COD.

Already the PS3 price cut is proving to be a success. Im a member of Time racing club which was formed back in Forza 1 days. Already many of the members have bought a PS3 and are planning on buying GT5 and some of them have only just bought the PS3 after the price cut. Imagine how many 360 racers will be tempted to buy a PS3/GT5 bundle at xmas and this is exactly what Turn 10/MS fear. This won't effect FM3 sales to much but it could effect the Xbox live subscriptions and also FM3 DLC sales.

I will finally add something that is in Turn 10s favour and that is online play. We live in an entirely different gaming world now compared to when GT4 was released and this is online play. I sincerely hope GT5 provides plenty of online features because just having the option for private rooms isn't enough these days. This is why im always surprised at the lack of discussion on this forum about the online aspects of GT5. I even read the other day a couple of members saying they won't play GT5 online! This amazes me because the days of just playing single player are long gone. The only conclusion I came come up with is there are some members who have moved from GT4 and are awaiting GT5 but have never experienced the online aspect of other racing games i.e PGR, Forza 1/2. This is the only aspect of GT5 that im not totally convinced of just yet and hope TGS eases my fears.

Seeing a car flip over many times would be very shocking and interesting. I hope we see some new footage with a Lamborghini. The Countach looked sexy on the PSP imagine it on the PS3!

I wouldn't under estimate Forza 3. It's a growing franchise and reaching a visual quality/presentation to attract all types.

If MS market FM3 with some stylish ads with the likes of the Veyron in October/November it could be really cancel out GT5 and split sales and to many casuals be first game to feature these cars.

I don't know about where you live (edit england :)but here in the UK you get months of Xbox 360 ads shown on the main channels at the most important times, continually. 300 million European ad campaign. 360 is dirt cheap too. Who knows though maybe all the money has been spent on non-stop adverts for the last two years.

It could be a let down for all the PS3 fanboys hoping GT5 will turn it all around. A lot of that is in the past.

I think one man and his dog seen that poll compared to the actual buyers of Gran Turismo and Forza. Plus you're wheel buddies and forum users in general only represent a small hardcore.

A lot of my friends who typically bought GT 1-3 are now 360 owners and that is the new PS2 cheap as chips. GT5 is some vapourware or long lost franchise that was great back in the day. Also some of them have jumped to buying a FPS game and GTA instead of GT/Forza and GTA.

I'm sure both games will sell equally well but UK and US isn't in the bag yet, past gens can't be compared.

I could be wrong though. I Just hope they make enough for the next game and push the genre.

I'm hoping that the GamesCom version of GT 5 was a build from 2008, and at TGS, it will have the latest build. 3D tree's and all.

How is that even possible for a game that's coming out in three months?

I have a feeling that some people are expecting that GT5 will be a miracle, instead of a well-polished great game.

We can't expect everything we've ever dreamed.

the GC demo had 3d trees right?

They look like it.. Also the LONDON track has nice looking trees as well, check them out.

But anyways..
I really hope they suprise me at the TGS, because so far I am looking at FM3, sure it has it's flaws (Gameplay graphics, 8 cars, not enough cars.. etc.. ) but so far they put everything a SIM racer wants, customization, livery editor, damage, good online setup even good physics.. Sure GT5P was more sim over FM2, but lets see how FM3 works out with physics.
But yeah, what I mean is that GT5 better surprise me with these features and as well, day and night in game live cycle, with temperature change ( weather effects can come in later as DL) then I will be a happy man.

There's a few people in this thread who sound downright scared of Forza 3. Ofcourse they would claim the exact opposite is true
Yeah, sure. ;)

A "demo" of GT5 sold as many copies as FM2 in less time, and was a platinum seller just from pre-orders. FW3 is FM2 with more cars and tracks, and a rewind button. We'll see who's worried, but from the way they're carrying on, it sounds like Dan, Che and a lot of Forza fans...

I wouldn't get my hopes up over something that there has been NO hints or chat about. Things like livery painters, engine swaps and other stuff. Go buy an X360 and FM3 'cause you're really swinging for disappointment.

I wouldn't mind shooting for things that wouldn't be totally unfounded. More info on the depth of damage, day/night cycles (didn't that Mazda and Audi on the Top Gear Test track seem a little out of place in the flow of the E3 video?)

There are so many things pointing to a release soon that there's pretty much no reason there wont be a release date. And if one isn't given a hell of a lot of info and an explanation will be.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure FM3 only got the manufacturers to agree to damage/rollover because they added their new TiVo Style rewind function so you can stop the race and rewind it to allow you to try it over again.

the rewind alone would allow manufacturers to allow damage and rollover? that's a bit extreme I think.

Well, I hope its nothing Like GT:Mobile, because then Gran Turismo will turn at something more like a Test Drive but with Awesome Graphics/Physics.

I mean, i prefer to do Race events with my Full Customized Car than doing tests, challenges or missions with a Freakin Stock car in a color i do not like.

TGS 2009 isn't until a few weeks. Knowing Polyphony Digital, it can mean any number of things. PD sometimes knows how to bat the ball 400+ yards, if you know what I mean. It's sometimes the things you least expect. It can be something small or something major. It could be functional reverse lights, damage to all cars (just race cars, but imagine what this turnaround could provide for ALL cars), maybe if there were 20 or 24 cars to a track, dynamic time and weather... any number of things. Even things well outside of my speculations on Blogspot and YouTube could show up. PD is the master of surprises. So while I don't believe in expectations, I do expect PD to shock the literal world again.

I hope they crank a grand slam but honestly I have this feeling in my gut it's going to be a weak bunt for those of us who have been paying attention to what little news has come along.

Funny how alot of the people spending time on GTP who consistently back Forza are usually the ones who then post 'i'll still be getting a PS3 and GT' or something like that, anyone who's played both GT5P and F2 would have no problem at all in distinguishing the fact that GT5P was the better game.

Some opinions are justifiable, but some especially when people don't even have both consoles and both next gen offerings so far it's a bit ridiculous

.

I would bet everything I own that GT5 will outsell FM3 by a ratio of 3:1. Im basing this on several things.

1. Previous GT sales.
2. GT5P sold more copies than FM2 and yet was a teaser and was released later.
3. Extensively played GT5P & FM2 and in my opinion GT5P is far superior.

I would say its a fair assumption that much of GT5 sales will come from Europe based on previous GT sales and the fact that Europe is more interested in racing games. The problem for Turn 10 is the only loyalty shown is from the US but here racing games isn't the most popular genre, FPS games are.

My estimate is FM3 will sell around 3-5 million copies but GT5 will sell between 10-15million copies by 2012.

The 2009 Tokyo Game Show is in Japan (like usual). Japan is the home country of Gran Turismo visionary Kazunori Yamauchi. You can bet something big will be revealed in front of his home fans. If you thought GamesCom revealed some great information, you better believe TGS will top it. Never mind what I think, Kazunori said it himself! A major similar advancement doesn't mean a few cars, though a few can be a part of the grander picture. I'm on the hype train, but I am not expecting any one thing. I'd rather drop the speculation and just sit back and relax.

Not at all.. I bought a launch day PS3 (well actually I imported a US one to the UK, then bought a UK launch console and sold the US one) just for Blu-ray and GT:HD then GT5p..

I later sold it after I had exhausted the GT5p content, and moved on to FM2 (didn't buy it at launch, as was a GT Fan, and didn't think it could compare). However, despite all protests on here, I found the driving experience to be easily on par (but different) to GT5p, it ran at 60fps, had a great 'ease of use' to the online thanks to XBL, and once over the initial 'graphics' looking dated, found myself playing it more and more.

I then sold my PS3 when GT5 didn't materialise, and 12 months on am now awaiting GT5 and getting another PS3 for it.. However the difference is, I realise that FM2 is a worthy game in it's own right, has a lot going for it, and am actually hyped for FM3 as well, so will be getting that for sure..

It seems like you can't enjoy both games equally these days without people telling you how one game is the best, the other the worst etc, despite zero impartial/credible evidence, just a small carefully chosen list of comparison criteria that inevitably favours their own preference.
