Why did they needed to destroy the most chill and fun mode with absurd time requirments?

I know for most of you it will be nothing new and most of GTPlanet members are really fast on track but for me the Track Experience was really a good way to learn track and earn some free money.
Of course I’ve golded all tracks on PS4 GTS with some better times than gold and really enjoyed it because it didn’t restricted the reward so much.

But now in GT7 most of the Gold times became Bronze and real Gold are really hard to achieve. Curently running Nurburgring GP and i have to say after whole day i feel so exhausted on controller.
 
Just a reminder that Sophy is not developed by PD but was a project by a different team of Sony itself.
With that dont count on it being the default AI for any oncoming racing game.
And especially dont set your hopes high that it would change the startup formation.
That's true, which makes it more tragic however. Yes, it was made by a different Sony team, but it was made in collaboration with PD since it's using GT7 as a test bed. Even including it as options for various tracks in arcade mode.

All of that effort and to not use it in a future GT game or make it the default A.I. is a massive waste. But that seems to be a common thing at the moment with Sony, so I shouldn't be surprised.
 
What would make one think they're not going to implement Sophy as the default AI at some point in the future? Maybe not in GT7 but definitely in future GTs. Unless they feel its not fit, why even spend the time and money to develop Sophy and not use it?

I unironically hope that if I bother with one of the upcoming weekly challenges, the part I particularly get is a Stage 5 Weight Reduction kit. That's probably the most valuable part you could win, too. Granted, the actual value of it depends on the car it's for, but it's still probably the most valuable item. I'm pretty sure I had at least one laying around that's worth 500k credits.

I unironically hope that if I bother with one of the upcoming weekly challenges, the part I particularly get is a Stage 5 Weight Reduction kit. That's probably the most valuable part you could win, too. Granted, the actual value of it depends on the car it's for, but it's still probably the most valuable item. I'm pretty sure I had at least one laying around that's worth 500k credits.
I've won a few stage 5 weight reduction kits. They're definitely the best prizes from the parts tickets and can help you build experimental monsters. I got one for the 918 Spyder which I used to build a sort of companion to the FXX-K/P1 GTR.
 
That would mean the races have to be longer so you can spend 1 or 2 laps preparing to pass each opponent car.
Or simply start at front and drive away with no competition as if it was time trials with a few roadblocks to lap later.

I think this is precisely why many people miss having qualifying sessions in GT7. My ideal scenario would be a small field of maybe 3 to 10 cars, with Sophy adjusted to the player's skill level, and the player would be able to set qualifying laps to determine their starting position, then have a closely fought race spanning maybe 15 minutes, with no rubber band or the collision resistance of the regular AI.

I like the idea of older cars only being available used. It’s quintessential Gran Turismo.

I think the used car dealer in GT7 is missing something though, compared to previous games. Like the dozens of variants of the same car that there used to be. I kinda miss that.
The problem with the UCD (and LCD) in GT7 is that they exist solely as an inconvenience to the player, instead of serving them.

Back in GT1 and GT2, new cars from the dealerships were prohibitively expensive, and so players are almost forced to shop for used cars in the early to mid game. GT1 and GT2 were notorious for including many trims and specs of a given model, but I think they give the UCDs their soul and purpose, as it turns the UCDs into a bargain hunt. Why bother with an expensive, shiny new A80 Supra RZ from the New Car Dealer when a used A70 Supra Turbo can be bought for starter money, and can beat the majority of the game's events? (Warning for bad language in linked videos) When you find a bargain car in the right colour and the right trim in the UCD and used that money you saved for upgrading it, you found it. You made it work. It's this sense of freedom that GT7 has entirely robbed players.

In GT7 however, the poor excuse for a campaign hand holds players and deprives them of making their own meaningful decisions, with relevant cars often being gifted to players, meaning that players rarely even have to buy their own cars to progress through the main campaign. That completely invalidates the bargain hunting, choose your own path purpose that the UCD served in the past. Not to mention, with the economy of GT7 being so lopsided, there is absolutely no meaning in saving 30k Credits buying a used FD RX-7 as opposed to buying it new with a fresh odometer, because I can earn 750k with just half an hour of driving.

As ikon has pointed out earlier, the UCD in GT7 could've been given its own character with used cars being sold with aftermarket parts, body kits, or even liveries. I can imagine PD staff browsing through the Discover section and choosing one publicly shared Style to put on a used car. But PD chose to do absolutely nothing with it. Aside from the 3 starter cars, everything in the UCD and LCD are in excellent mechanical condition, completely bone stock, just with artificial distance on their odometers (which I, among many others from what I can gather, find extremely irritating). The cars have no meaning nor character. They're just old cars. From a gameplay perspective, Brand Central cars are not only readily available, often cheaper, can be bought in any stock colour, and have a wide performance range. Unless a player already has an established interest and knowledge in the UCD and LCD cars, the game gives players zero reason to bother with the UCD or LCD. And it's game design I find baffling. Why would I want to spend over 200k on an E30 M3 SE when a GR86 can do what it does, but for much cheaper? Is PD trying to make me dislike old cars?

The UCD and LCD is, as far as I can tell, just there to inspire FOMO feelings in the player. And it sucks.

Other than Historic Sports Car Masters, which requires a 80s car or older, and Neo-Classic Competition, which requires an 80s or 90s car, and in that case, even then you still need a racing engine swap to make an UCD car work there.

And completion of extra books, which is, to me, a borderline form of loot box (in sense of buying credits to purchase the required cars to obtain a ticket prize from completing them).

That being said, the FOMO could be worse: you can be GT5's UCD where some events cannot be beaten without an UCD car.

When chase the rabbit became the game's main race format, that's also when qualifying was removed from GT and never came back until now... (GT2 did remove qualifying but it came back in GT3)

GT1 and GT2 was also when the UCD was in the car's brand (only Japanese brands), GT4 was when the UCD became separate from it (10 cars per 3 generation making it 30, like GT7's amount after update). GT4 had the LCD in the car's brand though.

The reason to choose newer one (for being more expensive) seems to be because though having similar power, the older cars tend to have worse performance, as seen by its PP comparison (e.g. A70 Supra has lower PP than cars like Silvia S14), which may still apply on older games too (e.g. 300ZX is no match for R34).

Yeah it indeed hand holds players too much, and I worry that the hand holding part wouldn't be dropped, or even increased in the following, considering that I hear some are even struggling with the hyper strict and linear format in GT7's campaign and the general game trying to cater to everyone thus more prevalence in hand holding.
That being said, the FOMO could be worse: you can be GT5's UCD where some events cannot be beaten without an UCD car.
More like Standard car dealership. So that the Standard cars can be displayed further from the screen unlike the PS3 detail Premiums in the dealerships.

And the returning feature in GT7 isn't UCD, but the Online Collector's Dealership, as the cars in GT7's UCD takes long time to be cycled and updated determined by the server.

I have a sneaking suspicion that some AAA assholes were sent over from Santa Monica to interfere with the game's economy, particularly the UCD and LCD.
 
GT7 was number 8(!) in the EU PS Store charts in December, and number 15 in the US:


And this is why, for all the valid issues we're debating here, the people who want Sony to replace Kaz or who want PD to make the series more motorsports-focused are probably not going to have their way: The game reviewed really well, is still selling three years later, and is retaining those players as well (time trial participation, the best external indicator we have, is as high as it's ever been lately).

Sony are not going to radically change things at PD when things are going so well commercially.

Amen! Well written and I couldn't agree more. It has all the elements to be fantastic but all is ruined by design choices and tideous gameplay. I revisit the game from time to time but sheer impossible to keep me engaged. Maybe I've changed, maybe not but GT was a hot lap 'simulator' and today it still is 🤷

Why not have the GT8 for the 7 to 77 crowd

Have a GT7 Pro version to compete with iRacing or AC Evo....

I actually liked the idea of getting the winning team's car for the Manufacturers Cup viewer's campaign, if only because it seems like the liveries used in the GTWS change a tiny bit every year or so, plus even if they didn't, it's a way to have that car with the official GTWS livery.
 
It just makes sense to at least make all those car available after every WT event. I mean, PD add those events in the World Circuits. At least make them selectable in the Change Car option.

I think, back in the older titles, newer cars being more expensive at least made more sense: you were buying cars with cutting–edge technology and performance. A Prius in GT2 made no sense to buy, as it has near zero tuning potential, is too slow to win most races, is expensive as hell for the performance it does have, and GT2 has a strict 100 car limit for the garage. But buying a Prius felt to me like I was buying a chance to experience something wholly unique that no other car could offer, with its CVT gearbox. It might have made no financial sense in the game, but I believe the car prices back then were already mirroring real world prices for the cars, so it felt appropriate. It also feels good to have the top trim level of a car if you can afford it; having so many variants of the NSX made having the latest S Zero feel like a flex. The UCD having cars that generally give more performance for your Credits was its clear purpose to me. It was a place to look for bargains to help advance the campaign, or simply learn about and marvel at off–kilter quirky cars I never knew existed. Not being able to freely choose the colours of the cars and having to be subject to the UCD rotation felt like a reasonable trade off for saving some Credits.

That divide and purpose is something I purport to be completely missing in GT7, because car prices in the real world have gotten so lopsided, and the economy of GT7 is abysmal. From a gameplay perspective, why should an E30 M3 SE cost ten times that of the GR86, if they both have similar performance? Why would I buy a used Abarth 500 in a colour I can't choose and with false mileage on its odometer, when I can buy it fresh from Brand Central in any colour of my choosing at a negligibly higher cost? The UCD and LCD feels to me nothing more than a way to inconvenience players to keep them checking the game every day for a car they want, in the colour they want. It serves zero gameplay purpose. If every car in the game is freely purchasable from the Brand Central like GT Sport, nothing of value would be lost from the experience; it'd be a straight upgrade in player experience IMO.
 
I think a point that’s being missed is the Tesla in the game is quicker than pretty much any car equal and south of a McLaren F1. Yes, a GR86 has more performance than an E30 M3, but the E30 M3 isn’t made any longer. It has a racing pedigree and history greater than a GR86. That’s the value in the E30.

How all that translates in the game, to new players, needs to be explained better than a Group A Menu Book. The DTM Weekly Challenge could do that if it were a permanent championship. It’s those type of experiences that may help to show the value of classic cars over today’s cars.

There’s a journey in this game that’s just not happening. As mentioned many times, players are blasting through cars too quickly. We do a Mustang Menu Book where we don’t get an event with say One Make Shelby or Boss Mustangs or Boss Mustang versus Camaro Z/28 versus Challenger R/T to give players the experience of that era. We all know it’s not hard to do. Just do twenty pony cars!

We have twenty car grids, not the old six where it would tie PDs hands to how they build a race. PD still do the mashing of different eras together and players get no real value of what they just received.
 
As for GT7, I think content updates as usual.
As for MFGT, who knows. I just hope they won't waste time on a demo.
If there is a Playstation showcase towards the end of the year, maybe a GT8 reveal.
(Yes, I think it's realistic to say we may see the next GT when the ongoing one is well into its 4th year at the time.)

Mirroring real world prices is also GT7 stuff (for their current value), like the expensive JDMs and the McLaren F1 costing 20 million (and that there are also extremely expensive cars that are significantly cheaper in GT7 compared to previous GT, like Miura). Though dunno if that'd be fine/allowed to happen if for example all the cars are available to purchase at all time.

I wonder if the UCD having this purpose can still be implemented in current GT games. Would making their Used prices significantly cheaper, like at least half of their fresh value or more, work? No way the LCD cars would get cheaper prices so, guess make it like GT4 where the LCD is part of the brand?

E30 M3 SE already costed that much since its debut in GT Sport. 200K when new (GT Sport), around 160K in UCD (GT7). 2000GT also has 100K+ value in GT2 too as an UCD car.

My gripe is indeed having Brand Central cars appear in UCD too. Except for GT5, the UCD was always about featuring older cars that are below the minimal year in the dealership (Japan cars only for PS1 era, separate UCD in GT4 except for LCD cars). Cars that can only be bought in the dealership aren't available in the UCD and vice-versa, but GT7's UCD features cars until 2011.
