Is 8K even needed? I think 8K is going to die like 3D did. No one really cares that much. 4K is enough for most people and few manufacturers even make 8K anymore. Even the new behemoth 110 and 115" displays, like the new TCLs, are only 4K.
The reason why 3D died is because it required extra equipment for each person wanting to interact with it and that you needed to keep charged and was causing some people nausea or headaches. If you wanted to watch a movie in 3D with your family you had to buy everyone 3D glasses and keep them charged. If one of your family members was suffering from nausea due to the 3D effect then you could either watch it without them or just watch the movie in 2D. If you want to look for parallels to that, VR is more like 3D and it remains a niche 10+ years after it was lauded as making traditional displays obsolete. Well, traditional displays still exist and it's VR that's not doing great.

8K is just a higher resolution. People said 4K was unnecessary when it started being available in consumer displays and it's now the standard. 8K will also reach mass adoption at some point. If you want to look for other tech to draw comparisions, this is more like HDR - just making what's there better without requiring putting anything on your face.

£879.00 for 8K from a brand name. It's a shame it's only 8K 50 otherwise I'd buy one.
50hz = 120fps?
It seems different brands use different ways to express specs. But apparantly its all the same numbers. 50/60/100/120 same these days. Used to be completely different.
But maybe not. Maybe 50hz means 60fps. I dont know its stupid. Samsung are guilty.

Edit: so 50 is 60, 100 is 120 ...

Just looked at the Samsung TV you linked to it is 8k 60 but it is also 4k 120hz from HDMI. It also mentions 120hz gaming.
So should be good with a PS5 Pro.

Nope. The TV is 4K 120 on all four HDMI sockets but 50 on 8K. It's a common setup for Samsung

As a hockey fan i will happily snap up an 8k tv as soon as something respectable comes into the 3-4k range for a 70+ incher. 4k has beena great jump. You can appreciate so much more of the game. Although its very obvious when the cameras in a rink are older, or the lighting ..not great

That said, the incremental gain is slow and annoying. I kinda wish they would do a big jump and stay there for a decade while fps and dynamic range improve.

As far as vr. More better gooder. Until its a window. 😁. Whatever those stats are i want em!

More seriously..i wish sony would cut a deal with the nhl, the way meta has with the nba. F1 should too, fir that matter. Vr sport spectating is the thing 3d wished it could have been.

Im definitely in the, whats wrong with you people, make the product and take my money!

Well, you could ask the console to draw 120 frames per second, but the display would discard 70 of them each second because it is limited to drawing 50 of them.
50hz means the device is doing someting 50 times per second, so it physically cant be 60 frames per second.

There is no such thing as 50hz displays since decades ago. It's an Indiana Jones ancient artifact of mystic properties. It even seems to trick reviewers of the Samsung TV.
The "50hz" Samsung 8k TV is actually 60hz according to their official certification datasheet.
And by 60hz they just mean default. Its actually a 120hz display. Its just a normal TV display like all the others.

Nope.. base model Samsung 8k is 60hz panel. What ever hz the software makes is irrelevant. For any kind of gaming native 120hz 4k beats 60hz 8k any day.

That said - unless one is already on premiun Oled/neoQled, the money wasted on ps5pro goes in far better use in upgrading your tv.

I agree, if you’ve not got a 120fps 4k tv and you’re using a PS5pro you’re insane
