I don’t think PD understands that TC in the real world actually makes lap times faster, not slower.

well that largely depends on the car. For road cars, TC and/or ESC improving lap times even for skilled drivers is a relatively recent thing with systems getting more sophisticated. Definitely wasn't the case for road cars in the 90s, early 00s.

I reckon that PD uses a one-size-fits-all TC algorithm for all cars which results in less than realistic behaviour for most of them. It's very much a driver aid on a meta level, and not a simulated TC system of the actual vehicle.

And while there is surely room for improvement, with the number of cars in the game you can hardly expect them to recreate actual TC algorithms. Manufacturers wouldn't share their source code, and that kind of software nowadays can be as complex as the game itself.
