I finally got gold on this as well. 1:16.898

Took me the better part of a few evenings to get there. The key is exiting the bridge at 34/35 seconds. My trouble spot was carrying enough speed through the turn before the tunnel and making a smooth exit. I kept loosing at least .5 sec by oversteering each time around.

This has been my favourite event so far though. The challenge is great! Now to get gold on the Tuscany rally track...

I did a 1.15,468 in this mission:

Settings:
Transmission - Manual
Driving Line - Off
Traction Control - Off
Skid Recovery Force - Off
Active Steering - Off
ASM - Off
ABS - 1

When I first tried this event, I struggled and settled for Bronze after several attempts, not hopeful of getting Silver when I came back to it, but come back to it I did, some months later, and maybe my driving style has evolved but I got Silver reasonably quickly, then posted a 1:18:3xx. Still over a second to shave off but confident I can do so, and with my DS3.

The key for me was taking it quite steady, keep tight and quite slow around those hairpins so that you are lined up pretty early for a fast exit. The one just before the bridge you can blast out of, just skimming past the fence on the right to cross the bridge. Oversteer is the enemy on this course so take it steady again around the long right hander before the tunnel, keep tight against the tunnel wall (though perhaps I am kidding myself that this line saves time!) and you can nearly go through the next right-left flat (with perhaps a dab of oversteer). You can also approach the final section pretty fast as long as you then slow right down and make sure again that you are lined up to floor it out towards the finish line as early as possible.

Sure the 8C is an "interesting" car to drive but I had a blast with this and will be going for gold soon :)

OK just realised I was offering advice when I only have silver so far, but hopefully it's still good advice! And should net anyone Silver at least :)

Yeah, this one you really just have to stick with it. I took me many tries to get close to gold, and then once I got close that was all I could get. I even got to +.002, and then I couldn't find those final two thousandths. But, after a few more tires I was able to get gold by -.300. When I watched the replay it looked like I was going slow, so you really just need to be careful and take your time to minimize wheelspin, especially in the switch back section. Then make sure you get a good run off of the carousel onto the backstraight/tunnel straight. The majority of your time can be lost if you have a bad exit off of the carousel corner.

I was a DS3 too

My Case is cross there in 35.5 sec (Time Check)

I can do the time check at 35:30 almost every time, but I still finish at 1:17:75x at frequent best. (damn best sits at 1:17.026 this is so infuriating, as I cannot even come close to this again.)

If I can enter the tunnel at 50s (where screen goes black) then I can gold it. I seem to enter always near 50:75:xx

I was messing with this last night (with PSN down, I've got plenty of time to spend on these events). I only had about 15 minutes but I got my time to 1:18.5. I can run clean laps without oversteering, but I think my problem is I am not putting 2 wheels in the dirt on the switchbacks. Part of that is due to my arms ending up like pretzels with the DFGT's massive turning radius. Should I be doing hand-over-hand? The few times I tried turning in harder by removing my hands from the wheel i got disoriented and couldn't find the paddles to shift to the next gear. I'm wondering if i should switch to the DS3 so I can get lock-to-lock travel a lot faster.

Found this on Youtube, golded it the second try after watching...

Vid..
Just a note, the description says TCS was off, but it is clearly on because he did a full throttle launch and you can see the red bar which signals TCS limiting throttle input. It helps the driver reduce wheelspin exiting the switchbacks too. I don't think it matters much though. The fastest way around the track is not to let the car slide very much so leaving it on is fine.

One thing that I will definitely try is staying in 3rd on the turn before the tunnel. The engine sounds like it is bogging but I'm guessing the lower RPM eliminates wheelspin so you can just power up the hill.

one thing that truly baffles me, is in many youtube videos, I see people braking into Corner 1 only After passing the little blue crate on the left side of the track. If I do this, I will clearly oversteer and miss Turn 1 and scrap the car.

Nevertheless, I usually never exceed 67 degree rotation to either side when steering with the G25. I can lap in 1:17:40 as good averages. Still sucks.

The WRS ran this a few weeks back.
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=198055

I managed a 1'15.486, but there were a few "aliens" in the 1'14s. Amazing stuff. If you go to the thread above, you can download the replays that were posted for lap verification. These are great, because you can put them on a flash, and watch them on your PS3. This helps much more than the youtube videos, because you can use the datalogger to compare to your lap.

Hope this helps. It really is a fun challenge.

Oh, Chuyler.. About the launch, we all seemed to find full throttle, without TCS worked just fine. So no need to waste time figuring out the launch.

EDIT - I forgot, the thing that most of us changed.. Brake balance. I believe I ran 3/7, but some went as far as 1/10. With some trail braking, this really allowed the beast to pivot around all the sharp corners.

Thanks Red. Just watched one of the faster videos in that thread and confirmed staying in 3rd for the turn before the tunnel is the way to go. To much time is wasted in shifting from 2nd to 3rd on the uphill. I'll work on that as well as getting my switchbacks tighter. It sounds like PSN is still going to be offline for a while so my series is going to be delayed.

Yev
Finally golded this challenge.

Used:
Automatic Transmission
TCS: 0
ASM: Off
ABS: 1
Brakes: 10/10
Controller sensitivity: 7
Active Steering: Off
Sixaxis
Time: 1:16:944

Some tips for people who are still trying:
Cross the 1st checkpoint at 35:100 max, enter the tunnel at under 50:100, go through the 2nd checkpoint at 56:200 and you'll be able to gold.
None of the videos helped but my mate (volkov93) told me 1 crucial tip: slide in the corner after the bridge/before the tunnel and go as wide as you can, start braking once you come close to that gravel part on the side of the road and that will save you about 0.500 s.
I hope this helps, good luck to anyone who's still trying - you'll need it.

Quoted for helping other people who are still trying.
Some really helpful information here, read it and then watch Zocker's video and you'll gold it in...well, pretty "fast".

No problem Chuyler.. I actually went into second, and then as soon as I started feeling any sort of loss of traction, I shifted to 3rd. But, I think it all works out close to the same. Shifting into second helped me point the car in the right direction, and I figured since I was already in that gear, I might as well use it for a bit. I think it comes down to preference, with neither really being faster than the other.

What are you talking??? You can't adjust the brake balance, downforce, etc. in the special events.

You most certainly can. You just have to bring up the RA menu. Brake force is at the end of that menu. This menu can be accessed with the turn dial on the DFGT or the menu can be mapped to a ds3 controller.

You are correct about downforce, this is not in the RA menu.

brake balance of 10/10 is essentially the same as 5/5 except you'll get full braking power earlier in your pedal travel, no? I'm not sure how that helps you unless you are in the habit of not pressing the pedal all the way down.

brake balance of 6/9 seems a bit odd to me but it may actually work. The few times I have tried more brake in the rear it has overheated the rear tires during trail braking causing massive uncontrollable oversteer. However, oversteer on this track, provided it can be managed, could definitely work.

oh and yes, you can adjust brake balance. Just use the shuffle dial on the DFGT or map the appropriate buttons on your controller.

OMG, i wasn't aware of that. Another wheel/DS3 advantage. :scared:

Remapped now the EE menu buttons to the 4 unused "cross" buttons & the EE menu popup to "select". Dam, this is really a big improvement!

You can now adjust TKS 0-10, 4x4 force distribution in +/-5 steps, ASK On/Off, ABS 0-10 & F/R brake balance 0-10, and this all ingame on the track!!!

Really, thanks a buch, buddy. :dopey:👍

I did it after 5-7 trys with all AIDS OFF and ABS=1,1'16.4!
Edite-I have Logitech G27.

When I first got my DFGT, I decided to learn how to use it, and I chose this event. First time I had played it.... didn't know of its legendary status, I had abs 1, everything else off, I got gold but it took a while, I just thought it was because I was learning to use the wheel.... NOPE!!! My advise: do not use TCS, it just takes away acceleration when you want it, just back off the throttle with the peddel or R2... whichever your prefference.... I too looked at Zocker's youtube video for a little help... It was a big help!! :)

Can someone please help me to "access / map" RA menu, I have only 1 original controller, and a G25 wheel. can I do this? (adj brake balance mainly)

Spent another 20 minutes last night and got Gold. Then I decided to record it so I ran a few more clean laps. In all, I got Gold about 5 times last night but I wanted the cleanest run to post. Granted, this isn't a 1:14 like the WRS guys but it is a solid 1:16 that I think anyone with a wheel could duplicate.

I have complained before about the turning radius on the DFGT. This is one of the tough tracks. You can see that my tires never turn red (except during the launch) and I need to go completely hand over hand to get around the hairpins. I think if I had a little more rear slippage it would lessen the amount of steering input I had to provide but i found it tough to get the car to rotate consistently.

I talked yesterday about trying to stay in 3rd before the tunnel. I tried it a few times and found I was less consistent. Downshifting to 2nd got the car to rotate and I could come in tight before the tunnel. It's a different line than some of the faster videos but it was still quick enough for the gold.

A quick break down of the turns...

Eiger_Nordwand_Short_Track.png

1) Brake at or just before the blue box on the left side. Start turning in while still on the brake, but before you've reduced your speed completely. This will get the car to begin to rotate. Plan your downshift to 1st for before you turn in hard. It will help rotate the car a little and if you use paddles like me you'll have difficulty hitting it once your arms are twisted. You don't have to have the front wheel in the dirt immediately on entry, but you won't get a fast enough exit if it isn't completely in the dirt at the late apex.

2) Accelerate in 1st gear and plan for an early apex into turn 2. I stayed in 1st, it was easier. Use 50% brake to hug the dirt. Start accelerating before you can see the downhill straight, shift to 2nd right when you see it.

3) Quick shift to 3rd and get to the outside of the track. Aim the car for the inside dirt before braking hard and you'll get a little extra rotation on entry. Similar to turn 1, its ok to late apex. Downshift all the way to 1st again.

4) Floor it out of turn 3 and you may hit the rev limiter in 1st gear. Come in tight for turn 4 and when you lift off the throttle in 1st the car will rotate itself. As soon as you see the bridge floor it and shift to 2nd. Put 2 wheels in the right side dirt patch as you approach the bridge

5) Start braking before you reach the flags on either side of the track. I turned this into a double apex turn. Brake harder than you think you have to and hit an early apex. Use the tires to scrub off additional speed and get back on the gas about 75% through the turn.

6) Tap the brakes just as you go into the dip and turn in hard. Get 2 wheels into the dirt. Ease into the throttle gently exiting this turn to avoid breaking traction.

7) Turn 7 is flat out, line the car up on the right side of the track so you can brake in a straight line approaching turn 8

8) Brake just before the dirt patch on the left side of the screen. Do not put 2 wheels into this dirt because it will increase your braking distance. Turn 8 is another double apex like turn 5. The first apex is at 10% around, the second at 80%, both are marked by dirt patches. The first one is easy to hit, let your car run wide after it. 50% through the turn downshift to 2nd and apply a small amount of throttle. Wait until you have the 2nd apex lined up and ease into the throttle. I went a little wide and didn't get 2 wheels in the dirt on the 2nd apex. However I got in tight enough that I could power through the final kink before the straight.

Final notes: This can be a fun challenge once you figure out where you need to make progress. I'd say achieving the gold time is one of the more challenging parts of this game. It is certainly more difficult than the next stop in the Grand Tour, Monza. Now I need to figure out that Lambo at Toscana! I think I'll have to spend some time learning the track if i'm going to catch that 1st place car.

Thx Chuyler, I will try my 400th attempt at getting gold on Eiger. BTW, I have my replay saved for gold Toscana Lambo should you need it. But you will get it, with your knowhow.

I watched a few Lambo replays on Youtube. Apparently everyone gets a different track. When I exited and re-entered I had the same track. I will try again and hope the track is different. I had the most trouble with blind corners in the dark. I was actually wishing the Rally guy was dictating the turns for me.

I hate this event so much.

Still stuck on Silver and not enjoying it in the slightest.

The car REALLY doesn't suit the track at all in my opinion.

It would be at home on a European city circuit or race track with nice fast flowing corners and long straights.

</rant>

time for a break, think i'll give the new seasonals a go :)

This challenge is really starting to bug me, I've watched countless youtube replays and tried all suggestions for set up. And I'm still just under half a second off gold. Been tempted to throw my DS3 controller at the wall in frustration. I havent had this much annoyance at a game since the McLaren SLR challenge on GT4, at least you dont have to wait ages to start the lap this time.

3 days of trying and finally with a time of 1:16.978!!!!!
Done with a DS3, ABS 1 everything else off really is the way
Was losing most time on the long corner after the bridge, my advice is go as wide as possible
good luck for anyone trying this!!!
