Two small things, first of all you're braking just before the 50m board into turn 7, you say just before the 100m board at 105m. Secondly you say your exit of turn 6 is legal in the game on the grass, that may be true but you do put all four wheels over the while line so you should really mention that in the real world that generally wouldn't be ok.

Still, great video.

You are wrong about your last statement. He has two wheels on the grass and two wheels on the curb, which considered track surface which is alright in the game AND in the real world.

I know for sure, if you get too far out, it will dq you. I've done it too many times to count. The game is monitoring how far out you can get and still be legit. 2 on and 2 off are always good in my book.

Hey Tidgney,

what a great job. Wonderfull lap and a great tutorial. to good to have you on my friendlist. i hope that i can do this time too ;).

Regards Flow

It depends on the track and the racing series but usually 4 wheels outside the white line, curb or otherwise, is considered off the road. For example at Brands Hatch in the UK if you run too wide at Graham Hill Bend you'll get a penalty.

That's exactly the same as this, they can do it once but keep repeating that line in a race and they'll get a time penalty for not respecting the track limits.

Tidgney, what corner do you find you mess up the most? For me it is the last two. I was 1 freaking car length behind Mav (top US time) approaching the final two corners, I messed up both and ended up in the 32 range.

For me nearly all the time it's the second to last and if I nail that it will be the last just pushing that bit harder. The second to last for me getting the angle of the car spot on is a killer sometimes, but if you nail it you do see a difference! But ye to pick a corner on the track I mess up on most it would be 2nd to last!

Brilliant video Tidgney, thank you.

At the risk of asking a total noob question, What view mode do you run time trials with and why? Do you race with other cars on the track in that same view mode? Is there an obvious view that all the fastest drivers use? Thanks in advance for your reply? Cheers!

The bumper cam :). Mainly because you have the clearest view and I suspect most of the fast runners are using that, I know some use the bonnet view and I think somebody at the US finals used the 3rd eye? But for me bumper takes it (Racing/Timetrialing/Everything) just from being able to see clearly everything, and being on the front end allows you to nail apexs that little bit more!

Very true and I do agree with you :). I do try and mention it in the video saying that in this situation you can use it as you won't go flying off. But sometimes I think it also depends on the track to, I know oulton park last weekend, on the first corner a fair few of people had 2 kerb 2 grass. But yes in a race if it made the normal line, stewards would take an issue with it. I think there at brands this year it was 3 strikes and a penalty?

I think so, I just remember watching the Clio Cup race and a handful of drivers got penalties for running too wide there. It does depend on the track though, for example the exit of the last chicane at Monza it's accepted that the drivers will run over the white line.

Just so it's clear I'm in no way having a go at you or anyone else driving that line, as always you would still be the fastest if there were cones on the kerb. Just felt like pointing it out. :)

it's a game, why should it matter? He didn't need to mention it at all really.

O don't worry I know your not having a go, I like friendly discussions like that about legalities in certain situations. I didn't see the clio cup I just watched the BTCC Highlights, and I did notice quite a few of them doing a similar technique not every lap but non got penalised? (Not watched race 3 yet so no idea what happened on that front :P).

edit: Is it a coincidence that the times jumped to a .7 after the tutorial was published :D???

haha don't worry I'm only playing with you :D.

Yeah I don't recall any of the BTCC drivers getting penalised. Definitely some of the Clio drivers and I'm sure the Ginetta's as well.

I'm surprised anyone has gained from watching your video, they're all braking at 105m into turn 7, not 55m. I know your game. :sly:

O no you caught on to my plan :P. I actually didn't realise I had done that, I suppose it's only expected though when you do the entire speaking part in 1 go. My lungs were actually hurting after it (Never had that pain before was rather random!). Good thing the video is there with it I guess :D!

Haha, it was really good to see such an in depth guide though. Usually you watch a guide and they just go over the lap once at full speed and say "oh turn in here, brake here, power here" and it's really not that helpful. You did a great job explaining why you were doing what you were doing and why it was fast, and highlighting how key it is to keep it stable.

Thanks Tidgney!! I was stuck .097 from gold forever it seemed. My DS3 throttle control skill wasn't going to get me my 40th gold. After watching all 40+ minutes of your video guide (and a couple dozen restarts) I finally knocked a second and a half off my time. Thanks for all the tips and theory, especially the one about aiming for the cone and letting oversteer take over. Oversteer I can do.

I wasn't sure where I could lean on my edges or what the correct approach in and through the turns were before I saw your carful depection of each turn. I'm a feel driver and looking at the mph is a distraction to me but I'll try to follow your how to. I drive in the roof cam because the track looks to flat on the bumper cam, but if I don't follow a ghost it might work for me.

I was always afraid that short shifting was to boggy and the acceleration wouldn't kick in to rocket out of the turn but momentum seems to be what your getting at and I'll start to retrain myself to fight the urge to escape early in a lower gear.

It's nice to hear your voice and the care in which you use to take us through your run, your such a great asset to our forum. I don't know if this old dog can make the cut but your video will be the trick for me if I do. Thankzz 👍

It's great to here of so many people improving now :), I spent 45 minutes of my lunch answering questions so nice to see people are wanting to find that extra tenth :D!

Lefty the best way I can explain the speedo is it can be a distraction but I only use it as it's directly in the screen so it's essentially another reference point for use :D!

The thing with the 3rd gear acceleration is 2nd gear is faster overall if you can keep traction by about 1mph (ish). But the risk of maintaining that is far greater because of the lack of traction in second gear, plus you loose time on the upshift! Which is why the difference is so little between 2nd and 3rd acceleration, and the safety out weighs the potential gains :D!

My car drifts in EVERY single corner wtf am i doing wrong??

It sounds like your being to aggressive with the car, if you try and floor it through a corner or on the exit the torque the car produces will just send you sideways!

Maybe a bit i'll try that but also it is like i have to push my joystick out of the controller steering is SO heavy! 👎

Great video Tidgney 👍 Think it will be really useful for everyone, not just in GTA but in any racing sim as you said. Some good tips in there that are vital for going fast, been using most of them already, I know what I need to do, its just having the confidence to do it, which is why I use the ghosts to help me go faster, just started following the 30.7 and already a tenth faster without as much effort as before, I think its psychological because its shows me the car can go faster :) Never know, at this rate I might catch your time ;) Down to a 1.31.330.

When you turn in your getting over steer straight away, I just get understeer. I am no using active steering either. Are you using a pad or a wheel?

It's the braking input which develops the oversteer. I am using a wheel but you can do the same principle on a pad. If you try turning in with say 90% braking, then try 80 and so on you'll see that the car wants to oversteer :), due to the load going to the front making the rear light :).

Thank you on behalf of everyone for making such a great video, I found it really interesting, i'm down to a 1:31.554 now so still a good half a second or so to go. When I am driving round on a lap I keep hearing your voice saying '3/4 throttle' I hope to join you in the top 16 soon :)

Thats funny that you say that because I hear the same thing, lol. His voice is stuck in my head now every time I take to the track, lol. Now only if I could replicate what he says, all would be good

This is the thing. I am doing the 75-90% throttle thing and I still get slowly drifting oversteer. My problems seem to develop mid corner messing with my transitions and exit.

hmm try a bit less steering input, you will get oversteer in the end in that gear but only at full throttle (Well that's what I find), it might be the back end is being pushed to far with the input, so a tiny bit less apex speed and less steering input. If that solves the issue you could then look at wider lines into the corner to keep the to more of a minimum.

I am definitely improving now, I could do a 1:31.2xx just to tired right now to put the lap together but I will try again tommorow :)

I'm surprised the 'stability stability stability' isn't going through peoples heads haha :D.

It does, lol. Not making fun of you by any means, I actually think its quite cool, but its your accent that sticks with me, lol. I'v watched the video about 5 times now and all I hear is your last lap dialog going thru my head, lol. I've learned a ton from this video, even how to do your accent, lol. I had my 21 year old daughter almost crying with laughter a while ago by imitating your accent, lol. Now, if I could imitate your skills as easily, life would be great, lol. Thanks again for the help my friend. You are the bees knees, lol. (I hope I got that right, lol.)

Haha I always think 'Do I really have an accent?' but honestly if you ever come up north in the UK you'll hear far funnier accents :D! Don't worry I know your not making fun, in fact I find it class with banter between accents I did it with my housemates at university! But yes you got it right, with the bees knees haha, but Ramon can have that for now with his epic 1:30.7 :D!
