Thansk for the video, found it really helpful. I can now nail the opening corners :)
just need to go and learn the last but one turn. as I am ony about two car lengths away from the ghost up till that point...then it goes all wrong lol Not bad as I have only done about 3 1/2 hours on this :)

It's the braking input which develops the oversteer. I am using a wheel but you can do the same principle on a pad. If you try turning in with say 90% braking, then try 80 and so on you'll see that the car wants to oversteer :), due to the load going to the front making the rear light :).

I am also using a wheel, are you breaking in a straight line or are you turning in while breaking ?.........................I live in Preston by the way :)

You should be braking straight at 100% and then if you want to initiate some trial braking then you can turn in while dropping the brake giving you that all important bit of slide :D!

Another one from preston!! You guys are everywhere! I pass preston everyday with my commute to work lol :P. Blackpool ---> Just past burnley (Nelson). But you'd know if you have seen me, my car has 'Tidgney' on the back haha (Was put on as a joke, but actually looked alright so kept it :D).

The video is an absolute gift :D
Good to see that I've got at least some braking points right.
Managed to get my beat my best time with half a second after watching your video ( granted, it's only a 1:34.224 but as I'm using a DS3 I'm more than happy at the moment )

This is a great guide! I've learned quite a lot from it concerning driving techniques in general, because I'm not an expert when it comes to racing, I just like to play racing games.

I'll see if I can improve my time after watching this.
I am currently sitting on a 1:33:221 using a DS3, AT and steering with directional buttons. Unfortunately I don't own a wheel so the 3/4 accelerator part is hard to accomplish for me, but I'll still give it a try.

Again, great tutorial.

Just want to add a quick thanks to this from myself as well. Watched the whole video and put it to use. Shaved 1.5s off my best time (still 1'33.4xx, which I'm happy with actually).

How you carry so much speed through turns 2/3 and 4/5 is beyond me though. Well done instruction and entertaining as well.

I'm in blackburn, nice to know that the north west has a fair share of sim racing talent :)

:tup:Great tutorial Tidgney, I improved by half a second on the 1st lap attempt after watching your video, your braking point reference were spot on even for me who don't use ABS:tup:. I got 1:34.228 with some trail braking slide on the 2nd last left hander, decent 2-5 corners and slow s turn, I am sure I can get through low 1:33 with more time, just got to nail those corners perfectly :)

O nice haha :), although I don't think many people would here like the blackburn folk with all that rivalry :P.

Great to hear guys with the improvements of times, really nice to see it has helped! The thing with the chicane it's about entering it from as far left as possible so that you then get a good angle on both while also maintaining a straight line, if you turn to early you'll hit the cones or get a slower exit, if you turn to late you'll get a lot slower exit or spin out from trying to overcompensate!

Two questions:

1) How do you see your apex speed? At the apex I am focused on looking ahead and managing the wheel to get the exit just right. Practice I am assuming, but do you have any tips?

2) I am using the old DF Pro that I got with my GT4 and continuing to lower my times. I am currently 1:32.070, but I am curious how much lower my time would be with a G27. I am not too worried about it, although the gear shift glitch is an advantage, great laps can be done with out it. So over one lap at Motegi East, how much time can be gained with the G27?

Thanks Tidgney, this video is awesome, downloaded it from youtube on to my iphone and watching it on tube to and from work . Hopefully I will be able to improve my time to qualify!!

For point 1 my eyes are seeing all areas of the screen. But in a braking point I am focused on the left, but can still see all other references which remain on screen. It's about overall vision, I know fast paced games with reaction times can help alot with this (So yes Call of Duty and anything like that, although I got mine more from competing with RTS's but the principal to practice wider vision can be done on GT. Your right when your car is on the apex you should be looking ahead, which I am doing, but I'm usually thinking far ahead of that about where I want my car to be rather than where my car is now!

For point 2 it really does depend, I mean I used to be a pad player last year and could nail good times, I think you can get used to any peripheral in the end as you adapt to the situation :) at hand.

Can give you an answer for 1. You just need to glance down slightly, you should be able to recognise the numbers quickly, don't divert too much concentration from where you're going. Might need a little practice but you'll get it :) don't have a G27 so can't help you on that.

It is just like when we are karting and glancing down to look at your lap time at the end of each lap (at 70mph), you automatically do it after a while :)

Hi Tidgney,

Here's some more props from across the pond!

Great video and very helpful. Using your guide and spending some time last night, I went from my previous best of 1:33.1XX to a 1:32.7XX. Your tips on turns 2 - 6 are especially helpful. 👍

All I need now is a way to dodge this pesky job and a few more weeks to be a threat to the leaders.

Great work!!!! Ye that's one thing that's holding me back at the moment, is work my only true chance at fast laps are weekends, so I'm looking forward to the upcoming one just to see what I can do.

Hey Tidgney. Thank you so much for your tips. It is not so much that I was not aware of the proper technique, but the way you said it helped me better put it into practice. I went from a 1:31.9 to a 1:31.7. I know I have about 3-4 tenths to go before I start scratching my head.

This is a great guide. Thank you very much for taking the time to record it. I really enjoyed the video. It got me excited to try and improve my lap so I gave it a few hours of my time last night. Previous best lap was a 1:32.256. My best lap from last night was a..... 1:32.256. :banghead: I still can't believe I ran the same identical time all the way down to the thousandth of a second. I will say I felt more consistent after watching this video. It's only a matter of time before I break through the wall again. I felt I was on the verge of it last night but at 2:15am I called it quits for the night with no luck.

I really need to break the 31's before Saturday if I want to have a chance of making a final push this weekend.

Huge thanks Tidgney!

I look at my replays and think that Vettel would be pleased with the lines I'm taking, then I wonder how I can still be 2.5 seconds off the pace! Your apex speeds are helping me see where the time is.

Not a problem :).

@Yrkshrpudding (Excellent name by the way :D) apex speeds are really something to aim for, I know alot of people follow a ghost and just try to match, if you actually have something physically you can see to aim for, it helps a ton :).

@zr1chris Consistency is the key, if you've improved that you'll suddenly jump in times when you nail a corner :D.

@Paskowitz great work :), you'll be pushing me down the board soon if you keep that improvement going :D!

Check your PM box. I do not think I will be challenging anything in the .1s any time soon... :)

Hey ye sorry for the blank message accidently hit submit thinking it was the reply button I just hit, just watched it and responded :).

Thanks mate! I just notice our first sector times are virtually identical. like down to .01.

I watched my replay along with yours and you are right, I am definitely too late on my braking. It is not much maybe 10-15ft but it was the reason I had could only have 60% throttle before the bridge and I missed the apex on the second uphill s.

down to a 1:31.392 now, starting to get the hang of it and also more consistent with missing the cones, should be in the low 31s soon :)

Yeaaaa, Lancashire ftw. I'm from preston! :)

Still can't improve my flipping time though! Argggghhhhh.

Great video Tidgney!

This got me much more aware of how to steer into the corners. Over vs Under-steer (or loose & tight in Nascar terms haha). If I can get anywhere close to the same zip-code as 31.1xx I'll be thrilled.

I just wanted to post my thanks. I'm not doing very well 1:38s but first go after watching the video was a low 1:37 :) I'll get my gold soon, although I suspect I'll keep trying to improve. Its addictive this academy. :)

Tidgney you are an absolute star. Watching your tutorial has enabled me to achieve my lowly ambition of getting a gold. I'm still way off your time but I've learned so much from this GTA.
