You can try either :
1) Cleaning the lens (I take mine apart and clean the lens with alcohol and a q-tip regularly)
2) Calibrate the laser (Time consuming and requires knowledge of electronics).

Hiya! :D :embarrassed:  Meow! (='.'=)

First, I would like to apoplogize to everyone for showing some of my vulnerablilty. :( I shouldnt have panicked so much over the issue and think about the possible solutions! 👍

After more attempts from 3 different PS2s, I couldnt get my copy to work. I then went to Target and bought a new PS2 to see what would happen. Luckily, it worked! :embarrassed: Now that I finally got it to work, I have released some of my stress by transfering my GT3 stuff and buying a Corvette Z06 with a Supercharger added on....:embarrassed: I am very happy! :embarrassed:

Keep up with this thread so common problems can be solved! :embarrassed:

Wow, I can't believe this many problems have surfaced. I have an original launch day PS2, but no GT4 yet. I also have a HDTV set so I can probably expect the 1080i glitch also. I'll report back when I get my copy of GT4, which should be in about three hours or so.

I got a problem too. However mine is weird. I have the new slim ps2 and games such as GT3 work and so does GTA:SA (had some problems lately tho where graphics couldn't be drawn fast enough). When i bout the gt4 yesterday , the intro skipped and i got stuck on the loading screen where it says GT and has that white wheel spinning that turns red after a while. I tried exchanging discs but i got the same problem. My next step is to clean the laser. But this sucks..
Any ideas?
BTW. my ps2 is not moded.

Thank you,

ive got the original launch ps2 and it works fine with gt4, works fine with every game ive ever attempte dto play actually. sorry to hear for the guys with no luck tho, but its not a problem with the older ps2's its just your system.

I had the same prob as M4vrick. Intro movie, TOTAL NIGHTMARE OF SKIPPING! I was able to get to the game and play it. I'm hoping there is no problem down the line with the actual game and maybe it's just the intro?

Anyone know any quality lens cleaners and where I can pick one up?

I have the same problem, but some bad news for all of you. I have tried TWO different GT4 discs on my slim ps2 (SCPH-70012) that is NOT modded, and the discs will not read at all. All of my other games play just fine, and I also cleaned my laser several times.

Thus, the problem may apply to more than just the old ps2's!

By the way, where did eveyone bu the discs that won't play? I got mine at Fry's in SoCal.

EBgames... NJ. Also, don't know if they usually do this or not since I haven't purchased that many games lately, but they offered a 3 dollar insurance for scratching for a year.. Is that new? Or just for gt4?

Hmm...at first I thought it sounded like a problem with older PS2's because the lasers do fail, even if you take care of them.
But I'm not so sure now. If the cause is bad discs then it's pretty embarrassing.... Well, I'm getting my import US GT4 some time this weekend. I hope it works on my brand new Slim PSTwo!

crack it open and clean up the laser and all around in your PS2. I had the same problem you are describing with GTA:VC and San Andreas, after I cleaned the laser it worked flawlessly

(BTW! The games that DO work, does it take a while to load them up initially?)

I just got off the phone with a Sony tech guy regarding my problem, and he says that its probably not my console, but rather a faulty batch of discs. However, I won't know for sure until I can get access to another ps2.

For those of you still having problems, try this number for the sony tech support:

1-800-345-7669.

I dediced to buy a dedicated PS2 and relegate the potentially heavy-duty usage of GT4 racing on a new system :)

I am still not entirely convinced that the lens of my trusty'ol unit is at fault as my other games operate fine, including GTA:SA and such. Also my imports such as Kaido:Chain Reaction and Initial D continue to work without issues.

With the number of happy gamers here, I am insisting that the issue is localized to my PS2 unit, at least I hope so, not wanting to take up warranty claims on a defective disc and risk further time away from GT4 :)

Oh well my $0.02. Happy GT4'ing guys 👍

If your PS2 is modded. Chances are your modchip cannot read DVD9 games.

My PS2 couldn't read DVD9 games (such as Metal Gear Solid Substance and GT4), then I had it re-modded. now it has no problems reading DVD5 or DVD9 PS2 games.

Mine loads all the games properly, except GT4... :grumpy:

There I was, all happy I finally had it, and I can't even play...

Could it be the DVD9? I'm pretty sure that originally the ps2 wasn't supposed to support DVD9s, there's been a lot of problems with GTA:SA with old ps2 (i.e. all non-PsTwos).

Since the PsTwo has a new laser, I'm pretty sure that's the only way to fix the problem...:(
Sending your old ps2 to Sony will only fix it for about 6 months (done it 5 times already, need to send it in again...)

With the game already inserted. Turn on the Ps2, but hold the reset button until you see the sony screen.

This worked for me, and I had the same problem you are describing plus in my problem the controller seemed to be frozen.

But it works now. Courtsey of BigHap

Mine did the same thing. Almost blew something up!!!

My Old PS2 I bought the day they were released in the UK and broke in Sept 03. I bought a Silver one which is running fine. THe older PS2's have older technology and extra stuff that they dont need that stops them working after a few years I think.

GT:SA was NOT dual layer. I have mine backed up just fine.

Ok, but a LOT of people still had DREs with it. Might be something Sony does with new games to make their customers buy the PSTwo.... :odd:

I picked up a copy of GT4 today and when i stuck it in my playstation it just sits at the browser/system configuration screen. i took it back and exchanged it and sure enough it happened again.

Model No. is SCPH-39001/N

anyone else having this problem / know how to fix it? i shouldnt have to spend money to fix this because they didnt do it right.

Yo dudes, try this! I have had this problemo before and has been sorted by this simple procedure. You'll probably find that your laser is a little dirty and remember that GT4 is a Dual Layer disk! I had this problem with PES4. Going to buy a new PS2 this week so, don't really care if it doesn't work on my old one! :dopey: :dopey:

Sorted!!!

If you're sure about what you are doing with your PS2, try to do it. If you aren't have it checked at a reputable PS2 repair shop. :)

My PS2 is now re-modded to Mars II. Now it plays GT4 ( plus Metal Gear Solid:Substance and Xenosaga) without problems. PS2 model SCPH-39001.

CLEAN THE LENS!
Also, even the smallest scratches on the disc can affect performance regardless of dual-layering.
My copies of GTA:SA and SSX3 both have minute scratches in certain spots and are prone to DRE's and freeze-ups.
I may have the oldest PS2 at this site (U10001691), and I have only had a problem with a dual-layer DVD once (Chronicles of Riddick) which played fine until the layer switch. I could FF about 20min. ahead and it worked fine.
Last night, I put in GT4 (perfect disc) and the PS2 gave me a DRE.
I cleaned the lens, activated the diagnosis, and the game loaded and played 100% flawlessly for 7 hours.

If cleaning doesn't work, then most likely, the pots (potentiometer) that control the laser intensity are going bad...this can be one cause of missing the layer switch on a DVD movie.

I thought GTA:SA was double layer, could've sworn I read it somewhere.

Is GT4 the first DVD9 based PS2 game?

Not sure about the new slim PSTwos, I heard cooling problems due to tight packaging, hey it happens in cars...

Could you please explain what you mean by artifact?

Sure,

I could just be me, or my TV. Let me explain my setup first.

1 - 27" 16:9 LCD HDTV - Sony - 1280x768 - Model #KLV-26HG2
1 - Digital Optical Cable for sound
1 - Set of PS2 Monster Component cables.
1 - Original Launch PS2

I have the PS2 set to component cable connection and 16:9 in the setup options.

I have the game set to 16:9. Although setting to 4:3 doesn't matter it still is 16:9

When I put the game into 1080i mode, the LCD automatically switches to that resolution.

The images from the game (even at stand still) look like someone put a window screen behind the graphics. It is faint but is there. Also when racing in time trial the ghost from the previous lap will show up in the mirror, or if I let him pass to be in front has half of the lines that would draw it missing, but the rest of the display is fine.

The artifacting on the screen is most notable if looking at the difference between the road and the horizon.

I have a few options to try tonight when I get home but I am not sure what the issue may be.
