GT4 wont load with old PS2s? Possible common problem?

My old PS2's laser lens is old and knackered but I just went and bought a lens cleaner disc and I've had much less trouble, perhaps that might help a few of you striken gamers out there. Although a few of my games still don't work but I'm looking in to that, maybe it's time to get a new one.

How many of you use your playstations vertically? I have heard that it is a huge problem and although designed to be used standing upright it inhibits the life of the playstation.
Next I remember when I first got my ps2 that I saw on a website that it isnt uncommon for them to collect dust and what not and even have spiders and other insects crawl inside them. My ps2 gets regular use and due to the scratches people have made on my gta vc and sa sometimes it freezes and it is a suboptimal dvd player known to get disc read errors on rented dvds. But originally there was a suggestion that everytime you clean the room your ps2 is in take to the vents front and back with a vaccum cleaner to remove dust and what not and this has always had pleasing results

just two thoughts for you lot.. good luck

Listen Alot of people are saying that thegame doesnt run on the first batch of ps2's. Well that is wrong, because i have the very first northa american model ps2's which i got the night before the launch day.

I have had to take it apart twice and clean the lazer lenz and adjust its proximity to the disc. When i popped in GT4 last night, it just put out a black screen for about 10~15 seconds, and then it ran the game perfectly. Everytime i start it goes right away to the game and no 'black screen of death'.

If you ask me, all the people whos ps2 arent running gt4 properly is because their lenses are dusty as hell.

Oh yeah, its been vertical since the day i bought it.

This thread realy worried me when I read it this morning, I was gonna get my GT4 on the 24th but I called bestbuy to see if they were still on for tomorrow as the date the would have the game, but they told me the had it today so I drove like a mad man to get to the store and found I would say over 100 right there in fornt of the store, make a long story short bought one went home poped it in to the old ass ps2 and i worked fine no problems, and my ps2 has had a history of discs not working so I dont know what is happing out there but I think its random or like many have said dirty lense.

OK EVERYONE STOP POSTING ABOUT THIS, SOMEONE GET THE LINK THAT EXPLAINS HOW TO TAKE APART THE PS2 AND CLEAN THE LENSE AND ADJUST ITS HEIGHT. STICKY IT.

the problem is the lenses...i have been cleaning my ps2 lense for years now.

I have a 30001 and had issues... I found that lightly hitting the PS2 over the disc drive actually helped and I was able to get it to work. (I wouldn't recommend doing it with a disc actually in there, but when the tray is open)

I am a little confused on the "opening the ps2 up and having your warranty voided" deal. Some people have tried cleaning their PS2's and sent them to Sony and had them fixed. I've got a pretty old PS2 and am worried about DER'ing since it wont play some of my games.

So, is Sony recognizing that the old PS2's discs just go dead and even if you've tried cleaning it they'll still fix it? And will video game stores that you can trade a used console into for cash or store credit accept them if they have the seal broken? I will call some shops up tomorrow but its 9:20 at night so no one is open.

Picking up GT4 tomorrow! *Praying it will work*

Yeah I wouldn't have sent mine off except I knew that I was going on Vacation for a week and didn't have any new PS2 games. Glad that I did though... runs everything beautifully now.

Oh and my PS2 was mounted horizontally for its entire life, to whoever was curious.

So, from your post at the end of page 4 Sony took your ps2 and fixed without problems even though it had a broken seal?

Correct. I know that people have said "yadda yadda, void warranty sticker removed" etc. but the truth of the matter is that the Sony techs know damn well that the adjustments I did didn't have anything to do with the DRE's. Why on earth would someone crack open their PS2 and adjust the lasers, etc. if they were working.

I don't even remember what my sticker looked like. I totally removed it about a year ago when I cracked it open the first time. So when I sent it to Sony, it had no sticker. My invoice read as such:

DEVICE, OPTICAL KHS KIT-01 N/C (NO CHARGE)
TRAY ASSEMBLY KIT-05 N/C
VOID TAPE PS-22 N/C
CONSTANT NO MECH MOTION
REPLACED PARTS
FUNCTIONAL CHECK

Total N/C

Kudos to Sony techs for not hiding behind Warranty Sticker Void policies. Wouldn't mention to the phone guys that I cracked it open though.

Sidenote: My PS2 was 4+ years old and waaaaay out of warranty.

I don't know if you would call this a problem with GT4 but has anyone else noticed that most of the time , before a race, that theres a bit of frame jumping? The screen usually moves up and down rapidly from 4- 6 pixles depending on your TV. And im having the same problem starting up the game, when you reset with the disc inside it doesn't start-up right away but it goes to the browser freally fast then loads. And i do have a 1st gen. console but with a new lens.

yea check the " screen bouncing WTF" thread alot of people are having that prob. well i had the disc read error on my ps2 , SR 300001 -R or somthin like that and i sent it to sony they fixed it but about couple months later i had the prob again , less frequent though, but havent had it for months now, was wondering if anyone that has the same ps2 seriel 300001-R had probs playing GT4?

I don't think that this error is a function of age, it must have to deal with how much general abuse you give your PS2. I used my friends original production PS2 (bought when they first came out, and cost $300). It ran fine. And its not like his PS2 sits unused, this is after two years at school, getting dropped a couple times, and being used at least daily, sometimes left on overnight etc.

I have the same version of PS2 as you it seems.
I got mine modded though. Works fine for me. The original Gt4

Yup. Exactly the same thing happening to me. And on top of that, last night in froze on me. You know when the screen turns black before the little GT clock starts spinning? Pissed me off. I was in the middle of a Championship. Now I save after EVERY RACE! I think it's time to trade up for a slim PS2.

I can't remember my model number, but I have the GT3 package version of the PS2 (red GT3 box). I was a bit worried after hearing of troubles with older PS2s but GT4 is working great so far. I'm thinking of either trading my PS2 in or just buying a new slim PS2. I figure it's only a matter of time before I start having laser issues.

I'm not sure about you guys but I do think there is a problem with GT4 :indiff:
I called my local wal-mart yesterday and they said the shipments were about to be delayed till march 8 :scared: but they got a few copies in and I live in NC

Hi people, I bought the US GT4 today and cannot play it on my hk bought PS2. After reading this thread, I thought maybe my problem might be a dirty lens and therefore cannot read dual layer disks.

But turns out that when I put in some DVD-9 movies, my ps2 can play them.

So my conclusion so far is the US version of GT4 cannot be played on a HK (Japanese) version of PS2... or perhaps it's the built in mod chip on my PS2 that can't read it. It's either one or the other.... sigh....

Has anyone got a similar problem?

I also thought about buying a chinese version of GT4, but will that be risky?

My PS2 is a 30001 by the way.

I cleaned my lense and my PS2 played GT4 for one night and one morning. Came home after school and it started having fits again.

Called 2 different GameStops and a Best Buy and all of them were out of the PSTwo's. Walmart had 6 left so I reserved and drove over there and picked one up 👍

So far I am loving it! I think I will send my old PS2 into Sony to have it fixed and then sell it to Gamestop for $75 instore credits..Which will go to the the 900* Steering WHeel :)

I have an original PS2 bought in 2000. I have used it as a dvd player until I got errors. It has sat around collecting dust waiting for GT4. Of course it wouldn't read the disk, so I tore it apart to clean the lens and crank up the voltage on the laser. The game plays fine..... for now.

Got a PS2 SCPH-30006, initially GT4 wouldn't work (it would keep going to the browser). Then I had my lens realigned, GT4 works fine now.

BTW. Anyone know if GT4 causes any problems (overheating, etc.) with the PS2 Slim (SCPH 7000 CB)?

it could be due to dirty ps2....

my gt4 doesn't run properly everytime.... sometimes stop after the disclaimer screen... so i have to reset it...
same with my gundam z game....

so i decided to take off the cover and blow the dust out of it.. (gosh that thing was DIRTY!!!)... didn't open the cd cover, dun wanna screw up the lens setting.... but now gundam works perfectly....
gt4 is a bit better.... still doesn't load sometimes though...

btw... the ps2 heatsink looks kinda sucky... hehe...

Trust me, unless you use a piece of sand paper to clean off the laser you won't mess anything up. There a bunch of how-to links in this thread, print one out and take the ps2 apart. Just get a Q-Tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol, make sure its not dripping and clean the laser in a circular motion for a few seconds, use the dry side of the q-tip to dry it, alcohol side, etc..
