GT4 wont load with old PS2s? Possible common problem?

Got GT4 last night in NZ, had initial issues getting it running, dvd is a gold backed one, clean as a whistle, it kept reverting back to the ps2 main screen. so turned on diagnostics and had little luck. I got it to work finally by once having it in an loaded to reset the ps2 and i got results so that was pleasing.

I noticed in the PAL aus/nz manual for GT4 it says for playstation models ****-30000 and ****-50000 series refer to loading instructions in your playstation 2 manual. I cant be bothered digging mine up but it may lead to resolution or help

my ps2 is a ****-30002 model

I have exactly the same problem, got my copy today. have you had much luck loading it up yet? i have tried tweaking the laser level but am not having much luck with that either. will try some more tomorrow though. i also have a 30002 model, and that set up note in the manual, very intriguing. i cant find my ps2 manual so im not really sure what it is referring to

Im really angry aswell .......GT4 PAL doesnt work on my PS2. It's is one of the first Japanese NTSC J 10000 models that is chipped to play PAL games.

When it loads I see the 2005 polyphony digital BLA BLA....then it just black screens and you can here the disk slow down........then it just freezes......

Before you say its the chip I bought PAL San Andreas just like a month ago and its a "brand new" PS2 game........WORKS FINE! This really annoys me......whats with sony and their disks......they must encode them different. Its not playing the DVD intro.......even the BMW demo worked!

Or.........there is a bad batch of disks floating around........anyone had this problem.....Im taking it to a mates to test it on a normal PAL PS2.....and it should work......if it dont its going back to tesco!

Can anyone please help me........it maybe im just gonna have to buy a cheap second hand PS2 but I really dont wana have to to play one game.......

I wont know till I try it on a PAL PS2 this afternoon but......is there a possibility that it could be a bad disk......it just seems to die after the "black and white wordy screen".......Just cleaned my ps2 with a cleaning disk an alcohol.....didnt do anything different.

Will the stores take it back if its a faulty disk......has anyone had this problem...

It Happens To Me Everytime I Wanna Play...

After About 10 Mins Of Trying On And Off And On And Off, And Cleaning And All That Crap It Works..

So Basically Your Looking At 10 15 Mins Before It Will Work...

I guess the point is, after you have tried all the repair methods, instead of buying a new ps2, call Sony.

If they are repairing DRE's years after the warranty has expired, that means it's a known problem with some units. It's similar to a recall, but only if you have an "affected unit". So before you say it's a p.o.s., call them.

I almost did what one poster did, which is buy a slim ps2 then have my old ps2 repaired and sell/trade it. Seriously though, it works fine on all games and dvd's now. Good luck to all!

I tried GT4 PAL at my mates house...........it works which means I have to buy another PS2...... (if you dont get why read up the page!) BUT! I'm in luck because another mate is willing to give me his for £20 which is quite reasonable for a perfectly working PS2.....dont really wana have another but I guess its the only option.....

He too turned to the dark side and bought an Xbox........another one converted for ya code_kev!

Oh well £50 quid to get this working......*sigh*

But its a bit strange. GT 3 (my first game) and GT 4 (my newest game) and some other games don't work. but for example: ace combat 4 works with no problems.
and GTA:SA too. I had no problems with GTA:SA. GTA:SA is DL DVD, like GT 4.
But my ps2 never read gt 4. 👎
I think I have to buy a new ps2
When you have some other instructions or tricks for me, so please post them.

I have a ps2 version 30004 with a Magic 3(?) modchip installed. GT4 will not play! I have cleaned the lens and adjustet it but with no luck.. Is there a problem with the chip? Can`t it play dual layer dvd? Every other games i have tried has worked perfect. Also GTA:SA but that is not a dual layer dvd as most people say.

What to do? Do I have to put in another chip?

This is a PAL ps2 with PAL GT4 by the way..

I am going mad!

Your english is good. Im 16 been learning french fro 5 years and I only know the words My name is. English schools arent too good. GT4 works on my PS2 which I got a year after the launch and a few months after GT3 but my friend who got his ps2 two years after launch doesnt work with GT4. Although he uses his PS2 alot. Maybe there was a series of PS2 which were comprimised in quality compared to the original in hope of making a bigger profit thinking it would work OK.

If a Lens Cleaning CD wont work try taking it apart and cleaning the lens with alcohol and a cue tip. There are many sites that tell you how to do it.......I just did mine 10 mins ago........before it was not reading anything (getting disk read errors) now it works everything including GT4.......just give it a clean...

i have an old PS2 also, and it doesn't load sometimes, i just have to keep restarting it until it works..can be frustrating, but is definitely worth it. On the other hand, my "Sims" game never works so yeah, it might not work, but keep trying.

When my PS2 acts up I take it apart and use a eye glass cleaner cloth on the lens. This lastest for about 3 months before it acts up again.It can get dusty up here in Sask.Also a can of comprested air to clean computures works also.

GT4 works fine on my SCPH 30002 PS2.

I thought that GT4 was meant to be a dual layer disc but it doesn't look like it is.

Its because its a dual-layer disc. Older PS2s or inaccurate lasers wont work well at all.

anyone tried to keep pressing on reset for 5 seconds ? It worked for me, mine used to freeze on the browser screen until I remembered someone telling me abt pressing for 5 seconds on the reset btton in the initial boot.

Off a very dumb friend in despirate need of cash.....he went and sold a really nice electric guitar the same day for £50!!!!!!

Im very lucky actually, cos this one works well, afew disk read errors but I took it apart and cleaned the lens......works great now. You can't even get broken PS2's on ebay for £20!

hey... first time posting!
just wanted to give all you guys a hand!

When i first got GT4, it had trouble loading in the main screen, and i wa slike crap, is it cuz my lens is dirty, or b/c my ps2 is modded! So i kept trying and it didn't work.
i foudn out 2 methods that work for me!
1. You load another dvd game, i used ffx, and then when the game is loaded and at the menu, u take out the game,and put gt4 in it. then u just click reset once and the game should load! I remmebered people used to do this when they had the old mod, like the swapping mod,a nd they had to do this to play dvd games

2. this one might only work for me cuz mine is modded, but i turn on the machine, count to 5, and then press power, this usually works. If it doesn't load after a few tries, i turn it out completely, even the red light is off, and then try again!

Hope this helps u guys out... i felt so disappointed when my gt4 wouldn't load at first

I said you can't even get broken ones for that cheap on ebay.....

your best bet is to find someone you know who has like bought an xbox (shivers) or is in need of cash......but im afraid the best you will find is £50-60 for a working one from a place like ebay...

I have NTSC PS2 SN U1001691 (1691st NorAmer PS2) with disc drive SN 1712,
purchased on release day October 2000. (SCPH-30001 ver1.1 on all features)
With regular lens cleanings, this unit performed until about 3 weeks ago.
The unit no longer plays any game or media whatsoever.
I speculate that dual layer DVD's (also DVD9) have finally caused the pots (potentiometers--control laser intensity) to burn up.
I have personally witnessed two other PS2's that have ceased to function as of late, and the direct cause would appear to be the dual-layer DVD's.
Almost seems like an infection.
But still, for 4 1/2 years of daily use (I would estimate 3500 hours playtime), that was the best $300 I have ever spent.
Currently, I am borrowing a friend's PS2 which I revived from persistent freeze-ups and frequent non-functionality and will be purchasing a PSTwo next weekend.
BOTTOM LINE
If you have an old, well-used PS2, then GT4, GTA:SA, and a few other newer games WILL PROBABLY KILL IT!!
