Yes but see the consumer is not supposed to have to "open the thing up" - that's the whole quandary. Sony makes crappy stuff too often. They have a
track record of it. I had to play my PS1 upside down. Then it finally stopped. I had to replace it. Then I had a long struggle with my PS2. Finally got a killer app called
Gran Turismo 4 that it wouldn't read PERIOD. I had to replace my
PS2.
I have never had to replace a Nintendo console.
Regular "maintenance" via cracking open your machine and keep the thing positively dust-free is not a reasonable burden for owners to have, let alone adjusting the height of the laser, etc. A good unit runs no matter the environment. So long as one's room isn't as dusty as the frickin' MOON there ought rarely be a reason to have to clean that lens, man.
Making such unhelpful statements such as, "Maybe if you people didn't mod your PS2's you wouldn't have a problem now would you?" or "I guess you people just don't take care of your stuff" like that other poster said only serves to mock.
Bottom line, you'll get nowhere by telling these people its their fault.

I believe that under a legal settlement, Sony is bound by law to fix your machine or replace it. Yes, even if it's been opened.
Try 1-800-345-SONY.
Luck, mate.
