damn its happening to me now. it was working 100% ok for the past 2 weeks or so, now im gettin the disc error screen. i think its cause its dirty but im not about to be breakin apart my ps2. anywhere i can get it cleaned besides the sony stealership?

Mine works perfectly with a Refurbished "Bulky" PS2. I personally think it's better than the Slim Fast one..

My friend first ot GT4 and his Slim PS2 heated up like the damn Sahara.. But I play on my Bulky PS2 and it never gets mediocre warm..

ive got the same problem with my SCPH-30004 (pal version) , Ill purchase a pstwo in few days... :indiff:

I have the first shipment ps2 (to America) so mine is older than the hills. After having the game for a few weeks, I got the Disk Error screen. However, this occured on all games, DVDs and CDs. A quick maintainence with rubbing alcohol did the trick. I fear no warranty sticker alive!

Look around to find a step-by-step process to clean your beast... I know techTV ran a segment about it along time ago.

Im having this problem too. I can get through selecting a car from my garage but until I go to set up a race and select the track, from there it freezes. I have no Idea whats goin on... :indiff:

I have an old ps2 and gt4 works great.
my m8 has an old ps2 (about the same age) and it has problem reading....

the only difference is that myn is clean.

Hi all,

I had the DRE and slow upload problem of GT4 on my early 2003 PS2. Wouldn't buy a new one because of the firewire connector missing on the slim PS2's and the possibility of LAN racing. We sometimes get together with 6 PS2's to have this crazy racing sessions.
So, being the guarantee expired, I decided to open it up and did the following:
- cleaned the lens although it still looked brand new and clean
- cleaned the worm which is driving the lens and oiled it
- cleaned the 2 metal guiding bars and oiled them to
- marked the original position of the white cogwheel and then moved it counterwise, 2 positions at a time, testing the game after each adjustement.

It worked for me after 3 times, moving the cogweel 6 positions in total. If you want your PS2 to work fine again I think you'll have to execute all actions mentioned.
At first I only adjusted the cogwheel but this was not enough as the upload of the game was still rather slowly, in comparison to the GT3 upload and I sometimes got the "red uploadcounter" whilst playing the game.

Now all is fine, great game, tremendous effort by PD. The noise of the car is unbelievable using the backview on the racing track. Try a Nissan Skyline with turbo tuning. I have a '91 running as I'm still early in the game, DRE problems you know ;-). Sounds a bit like the Porsche Moby Dick running at Le Mans.

Very Nice!

Best to you all.

I have a SCPH-30003 R , and it plays the disc just fine.

However, it didn't work on my 2000 model, no matter what I tried (cleaning the laser, calibrating it) It just didn't want to know. It did play other games, and DVD's though.

i brought my Playstation 2 back in 2001, my model number is SCPH-35003GT i purhased it in september of that year, me and my mate got it at the same time at the same place and i and him havent had any faults with them, but my mate got one from christmas, the same bundle pack with GT 3 A-Spec and he has had to replace it 3 times, sometimes you can get faulty unit, the laser on the playstation does ware out, so thats why some of the eailer models are unable to play gt4 and other games

My GT4 won't load anymore, when I first bought everything was fine, but 2 weeks ago it started to take a while to load, yesterday I had to reset like 40 times before the game load, it took me 30 minutes. Today I couldn't play the game, I do not know what to do, this evening I am going to a friends house to try it there and see what happen. I don't understand it's getting worse and worse. I don't know if buying a new game or buy a new pstwo, I have the old one and all my games load perfectly. I know I am not alone with this problem, maybe PD should think things twice before make such a sdghfdklfhfking********* copy. I am really pissed.

Ah, my PS2 it's clean.

i feel your pain, but i brought a new PStwo and im SO not disappointed. Plus if my PStwo goes wrong, Sony owe me a new one :)

An interesting thing happened the other day. I had the b-spec driver doing the nurb 4 hour and close to the end of the race the ps2 started making horrible clicking noises. At the end of the race, the spinning dial on the loading screen was red and the game wouldnt continue. After a few obscentities, I opened the disk tray and discovered that the back of the disc was full of dust. I opened up the ps2 and found that the laser eye was COVERED in dust. One windex soaked q-tip later, the game loads perfectly and actually faster than it used to. If the game stops working for you, my advice is to carefully open the ps2 and clean it, because you are not going to void any warranty since the warranty is only 90 days.

Hopefully cleaning it will "work fine". Mine wouldn't play blue backed discs, CD-ROMs, PSONE discs and some DVDs.

I've performed:

1. the cleaning,
2. scotch brite on the white disc grabber,
3. magnet on the top of the disc holder,
4. cleaning the laser with a swab and alcohol,
5. readjusting the laser height with the white gear and a sharpie (twice), and
6. adjusting laser voltage.

i had that problem aswell. would only play PS2 DVD's. i opened it and gave it a bit of a clean (nothing special like you did) and it booted everything like new. its running a tad slow now (a month on) but that is probably temperature conditions. also i have it vertical as horizontal never seems to work

I bought a Driving Force wheel bundled with GT4 (PAL) and the game was freezing all the time. In the first week it only froze once, but in the next week it froze about 8 times, so I had to take it back.

The freezing only happened in the menus in GT mode, when going into or out of the garage or "GT Auto". All I would have to do is go back and forth enough times through the menus and it would freeze up. The game case itself was marked as "not to be sold seperately" and did not look entirely brand new (also, the case was blue instead of white). I suspect the copies bundled with the wheels are somehow inferior (even the label on the disc is very poorly printed).

Anyone else have this? 'cause I am waiting for the whole Driving Force Pro pedal problem to be rectified before I can get GT4 again, and dont want another dud copy bundled with my pro wheel.

Europe is known for its fake copies.

Europe is known for its fake copies.

Europe? I thought it was Hong Kong that is known for its factory-pressed "HK silver" ps2 discs?

It couldn't have been fake because the product is dispatched by Sony, I think.

Unless Logitech are responsible for it. Actually, I think they are made in Taiwan, so who who knows...

*whinge* all I fricking want is a DFP with GT4 , and I can't find a working version of that anywhere.

either the game is f$@!@d or the DFP pedals are f$%#^d, WHY CANT THEY MAKE PRODUCTS THAT JUST WORK!?

I got GT4 as soon as it came out and i couldnt wait 2 play it but my ps2 wouldnt detect it. i thought it was the disk but it still wouldnt work but after repeatingly reseting the ps2 it worked. this process is totally random and sometimes it works after 1 reset and sometimes i have to reset the ps2 up to 12 times. i am fed up of it not working straight away so i have sent it 2 be replaced. if anyone is deserate for the game to work try going to browser and insert the disk at the bottom it should flash reading disk twice and then dissapear. eject the disk and re insert it, keep doing this until the reading disk flashes more than twice and it should then work(this may take a while) :) . if it helps i bought my ps2 in 2002

If you havnt opened your ps2 you can send it to sony and theyll fix it for free, no matter how far out of warranty it is. Just call in and tell them you keep getting disc read errors and ***** at them. If you have opened it, dont expect to get it back when you send it in. Cause they will keep it. Do not open it for a short term fix, you will be sorry soon enough. If you have opened it and cleaned it etc. I suggest you perform a voltage adjustment. This should only be done by very intelligent PATIENT people as its very easy to destroy your ps2 in this process but it will most likely fix your problems if you do it successfully. Vaya con Dios.

This is totally false. I had been in to my PS2 several times. I was just about to buy a slim PSTwo when I decided to say screw it and send it off.

My PS2 had:
-No factory seal
-No "Void If Removed" stickers
-Wiring tape had been removed
-Gears had black sharpie placemarkers
-Scuffed-by-ScotchBrite white disc holder

Any tech that has done more than 10 of these would know immediately that I had opened it AND tampered with it. They sent my PS2 back fixed free-of-charge and it has worked better than before since I've received it.

Yeah, mine played vertical for a while also. I cracked my PS2 open several times performing various fixes until I was ready to totally write it off. Glad they fixed it for free though.

Good luck to all with their units!

Please help me!

Here in the Philippines, there are mountainloads of fake games. I have a modded PS2 to play these fake games. Since my PS2 is more than 3 years old, and I don't live in America, the warranty is useless. I have bought a Gran Turismo 4. This GT4 is original. Yet, it always just hangs around at the browser menu after you press the "reset" button and if you do go to the browser, the disc never shows up. I plan to return my copy. Yet if that other copy doesn't work what will I do?

This is my PS2:

-NTSC U/C standard
-SCPH-30001 R
-Bought in Best Buy electronics store May 4, 2002
-Modified on January 28, 2003
-Bought Gran Turismo 4 on April 14, 2005

PLEASE HELP! I haven't got the money to buy a new PS2!!!

I picked up a copy of GT4 today and when i stuck it in my playstation it just sits at the browser/system configuration screen. i took it back and exchanged it and sure enough it happened again.

Model No. is SCPH-39001/N

anyone else having this problem / know how to fix it? i shouldnt have to spend money to fix this because they didnt do it right.

*EDIT* I fixed my problem. i had to follow this link http://www.classicplastic.net/dvgi/eventsfeaturesIMPORTPS2cleaning.htm

and clean my lense. works fine now 👍

I bought my PS2 in the first week the PS2 hit the European Market and i've never had any problems with it. And i never had to clean the PS2. I've read somewhere that some old PS2's have an USB 1.1 (or something like that) connection which means that you can't use your USB Flash Pen Drive (which ussually has USB 2.0) with GT4. That reeeeally sucks.

My GT4 disc has gradually went bad. It played fine when I got it but now it won't load. I know two other people whose disc went bad about the same time mine did. Their copies of the game will no longer load anymore either. The disc has never left the PS2 since buying the game but the bottom of the disc looks like the laser itself has caused the damage with scratches that are perfect circles. Anyone else having this issue? What can I do about it?

i had disc read error problems for a few days.

Then i just wipped off the disc and took a deep breath and blew as hard as i could into the disc tray while it was open.

I already had to send my PS2 to sony once bc its a launch system and it had a very bad laser that wore out... and it's happening again, and is back to the point where it only runs a few games. FYI, usually the worn down lasers play the NEW games and not the old ones.

Bottom line... Im really disappointed with SONY. The first gen PS was great, never had any problems, but the PS2 just has had so many problems. If i have the option, I buy all my other games for XBOX now bc it just runs better. (except I got GTA San Andreas for PS2 bc i couldnt wait :) )

So when you say you had no void if removed sticker you mean your system never even had one on it or you removed it? Would you mind giving me the address you sent your ps to and what else you sent with it? I was just going with the info sonys customer support guy gave me as well as some other folks. Anyway i might as well try and send it in since all ive got is a piece of broken down machinery. Thanks.

Um, yeah, I removed the sticker when I cracked it open, best I can remember, since it was out of warranty anyway.

The address was:
Bristol SSC
1501 Grundy's Lane
Bristol, PA 19007

But you must have the SR# that the Sony rep gives you. You should call Sony support again and talk to a different operator. If you do not tell them you cracked it open, you should have no trouble getting it fixed. Unless of course it's been modded in any way. Good luck!

My ps2 is the newer model (a couple years old) and it has froze a few times during loading screen (it just turns black and wont load). I think this is because the lens needed cleaning; I cleaned it a few weeks ago and I don't think i've had a problem since. 👍

I have the same exact problem. I have a 4th generation ps2 and got gt4 the day it came out in north america. It always worked fine when I got it but recently it constantly freezes and now doesnt even run at all. However, all my other games run fine.

yea ..this seem to happen to one of my friends..so what we did was trade the old ps2 with 3 games..and got $120 for it..and added $30+ to get the new ps2..b/c we werent sure if the same problem would happen again..so just bought a new ps2..and now its fine
