Call 1-800-345-7669 and have your PS2 handy. Tell them you are getting Disc Read Errors.....

This is the best solution to the Disc Error Problem. I did this in late January this year when I start having problems with all my PS2 games (old and new). Called Sony, they told me to mail it to them, week after that, I had my PS2 back working like a champ... They even clean all the dust... No charge, except for the shipping to send it out. Depressed and desperate, I FedEx'd with next day delivery to Bristol NC. ~ $25.... But it works for me.

The solution of opening the thing works but is a temporary solution for all I understand. Sending your PS2 to Sony is a permanent solution because they replace the faulty laser or laser arm.

Got a PS2 SCPH-30006, initially GT4 wouldn't work (it would keep going to the browser). Then I had my lens realigned, GT4 works fine now.

BTW. Anyone know if GT4 causes any problems (overheating, etc.) with the PS2 Slim (SCPH 7000 CB)?
I have the new slim PSTwo and it runs like an ice cold killer, its has normal tempature that you have at an electronical device.

I picked up a copy of GT4 today and when i stuck it in my playstation it just sits at the browser/system configuration screen. i took it back and exchanged it and sure enough it happened again.

Model No. is SCPH-39001/N

anyone else having this problem / know how to fix it? i shouldnt have to spend money to fix this because they didnt do it right.

*EDIT* I fixed my problem. i had to follow this link http://www.classicplastic.net/dvgi/eventsfeaturesIMPORTPS2cleaning.htm

and clean my lense. works fine now 👍

It Works!!!! i cleaned my lens and it Works!!!! yess baby im so glad!!!

I big problem with the older PS2's is the way they designed the airflow through the case. If you live in a house that is relatively quick to form layers of dust ( like my place ) then your likely culprit is going to be dust getting sucked in through the CD tray and onto the laser.

I've had to clean my PS2 twice since buying it years ago. Popped the top, cleaned the laser eye with a Qtip and rubbing alcohol and restored my disc read performance.

Mine is a SPH-3000 series, and runs GT4 flawlessly. Interestingly, before I cleaned the lens, it wouldn't read GT3 and just barely read GT4 ( took a few minutes to load ). I haven't tried reading GT3 yet, but GT4 loads just as fast as I would expect.

Part of my experience with cleaning for those of you who have never done it before... once you've cleaned the lens, give the alcohol a chance to dry up before you run a disc or you may end up with a disc read error again because the alcohol is refracting the laser. Trust me, it freaked me out that cleaning the eye didn't help. I cleaned it again and let it sit for 5 minutes and haven't had a problem since.

It won't hurt to rub the eye with the dry end of the Qtip after cleaning either.

All you guys out there with Disc Read Errors, I would highly suggest giving it a good cleaning first as long as it's out of warranty anyway.

I had this Disc Read Error thing too. I just did what I thought everyone else would do, and from what everyone is sayin' (clean the lens w/ a q-tip and alcohol) I did just that. So I believe this is pretty much the cheapest way of cleaning it, and it doesn't take too long. If you have a pressure air pump, or whatever it's called, you could set the pressure low, and blow out the dust, but be careful, some thing could be loose. I also grabbed a toothbrush and cleaned out the vents on the front of the PS2, next to the ports, and also used it to clean the vent where the fan is located. Doing all this, the blue dots (before Browser and System Configurations show up) didn't even load, that's how fast GT4 loads for me now. After playing for awhile, I also noticed that the bouncing of the track selection screen and before the starting grid, hasn't been bouncing so much. Overall, GT4 runs perfect, and I'm enjoying every minute of it, so... good luck w/ cleaning your PS2 kids, and have fun.

Call 1-800-345-7669 and have your PS2 handy. Tell them you are getting Disc Read Errors. Give them an Email address when they ask for it. They will email you the SR# and then UPS it to them, takes 10 days and PS2 works like a champ. if they happen to ask you about which games have problems, just tell them the older ones and GT4 wont play, they will most likely upgrade your unit for free. It is a VERY common problem. Here is a copy of the confirmation email.

What if your warranty seal has been removed??
Would they still do it?

Ooppss ..i didn't read the last page ot he topic..
nevermind the above

I think that no one Can BEAT a shipping ONLY deal for PS2 Service!!!

Hello there mates!!
I have a ps2 that i had modded myself a mesiah chip before two years!!
I had recently some reading problems but it was just a cleaning of the lens.
One very big issue you all have to becarefull is the Blank Media you use to burn.
I noticed that taiyo yuden Dvd-r discs x4 and princo x4 they play like butter.
Media like Budget 1-8x (code ty002) has to be avoided in all terms!!!
Good media also is Philips 1-8x (Fuji003 Code) works fine as well.
Don't throw your Ps2 yet people!!!
First clean your lens and then check your blank media you are using.

I hope i helped there mates!!!

P.S. I have already pre-order my gt4 copy over the lik-sang since july and they shipped it to me before two days.Within this week i will have it in my hands too!!!
Loooool.

First of all, my PS2 is SCPH-35001 (got it with GT3 :) ) and I have cleaned it once before by opening it up and using a Q-tip. It plays all of my PS2 games normally but it won't play black-backed discs unless it is sitting vertical. Does anybody know why that is? I got GT4 last night and it played flawlessly so it cant be a problem with it being too old.

I got a problem too. However mine is weird. I have the new slim ps2 and games such as GT3 work and so does GTA:SA (had some problems lately tho where graphics couldn't be drawn fast enough). When i bout the gt4 yesterday , the intro skipped and i got stuck on the loading screen where it says GT and has that white wheel spinning that turns red after a while. I tried exchanging discs but i got the same problem. My next step is to clean the laser. But this sucks..
Any ideas?
BTW. my ps2 is not moded.

Thank you,

I was playing my GT4 fine and this morning I go to play and as soon as the game goes to load something the white wheel turns red. Will cleaning the lens work for this problem as it does for the others?

I'm sorry to read about your bad news. My friend has the same problem with GTA:VC. The early PS2s have trouble with new games sometimes. The only solution that I have is getting a new PS2.

I know this is late but the age of the ps2 has nothing to do with it, if you read earlier posts someone had the FIRST gen and it worked.

I had the loading problem with the first GT4 i bought. When i looked at the Disk, i could see various scratches on it, so i returned and exchanged it. Now it loads (slow) and i noticed, just before the "Sony entertainment....presents" as the RPM's on the Console's fan go up, there's always a spark, just below the #2 slot, inside the air circulation opening. I don't think there's a light inside the console, so it has to be.. sparks :irked: and why does it take so **** long to load up when entering a race:tdown: Perhaps it was made to work on the NEW PS2(slim)?:grumpy:
I'm at 26% and so far, i prefer GT3. I like the improvements done to the "original tracks", but for the rest.. i spend more time waiting for it to load ..Zzzzzz

I have PS2 PAL SCPH 30004 R with Messiah 1

With PS2 in horizontal position, I tried to load GT4 3x, it didnt load (i heard the lens searching)
Then I put the PS2 in vertical position and it DID load with the first try!

I think it has nothing to do with dirty lens does it?
Its just that the position of the lens/DVD changes a tiny bit when i put it vertical.
Can you adjust the laser with the white cog above the laser unit?

Hi, I´m from Mexico, and i have the same problem with my PS2 and the GT4. My PS2 it's a SCPH-30001, and i can not play GT4, i get the READ ERROR message, i bought my GT4 at Sam's Club wich is part of Wall Mart Company, i still don´t know what to do to be able to play, i think i will clean the led, but if anybody has satisfactorily correct this problem with the same PS2 model that mine, i will be tankful whit you.

i have a ps2 that i bought THE DAY THEY CAME OUT and i started having that problem with mainly the blue back discs about a year ago and all you have to do is open it up and clean it....that link in the first entry is probably all you need... it only takes like 10 minutes...mines still runnin great (its has nothing to do with versions...theyre just dirty)

Here's my $0.02. After reading numerous issues about the game not loading I bought the game and tried it out. I have the old PS2, not modded. Sure 'nuff, it stayed at the browser screen. Sometimes it would 'autoload' then stay black. I hit reset a number of times and ejected the game, same thing. I took a vacuum to the front to clean the dust out a little and the same thing happened. I then remembered someone telling me, if you turn the console on its side (reset and eject facing up) it reads better. I did this and lo and behold it works! Although some weird orange flash/spark can be seen every time this game comes on, I NEVER had a problem since. So don't buy a new PS2 if you don't have to.

it isn't a spark, my ps2 does the same thing so there must be some kind of light in there.

I have one of the oldest and first PS2 to ever come out. It played fine for the first week or so. Then, as I posted in another thread, the game just froze up. I took it back and got another game. So far thats the only problem I have had and it was the game. Plays exactly the same on my old ps2 and my girfriends new PS2.
ACtually my old one has been running for 3 days straight running B-spec in the endurance races.
EDIT: I must state that I have had several problemes with the old PS2 and actually sent it in for repairs at least 3 times within the first year it came out...but... with GT4 it works fine.

I have as old a ps2 as they get...waited in line at 2am on the release day to get it. I have had no problems at all with GT4.

Although, awhile back I did have the disc read error problem with another disc. and after a quick internet search I found instructions on how to open it up and clean and adjust the the laser. Worked like a charm and haven't had a problem since.

my GT4 worked fine until yesterday. Yesterday it started skipping during the intro and did not want to load races or practice or anything. The white spinning loading logo becomes red and PS2 makes strange noises... Do you guys think it has something to do with the PS2 or with the game itself?

-I tried my GT4 at my friend's house and it didn't work properly... however his PS2 is renowned for being messy with some games... So I don't know what to do.

-I called Sony tech support and the guy told me he was sending me an E-mail to give me the instruction on how to ship my PS2 and have it repaired... However I havn't received anything yet.

Please help me guys!

Thanks in advance.

Well I realy am happy I dont have this problem...... Im starting to think there might have been a bad batch of discs that were released. Someone brought that Idea up early in this thread, my PS2 realy old and I havnt had a problem yet.

I did have a problem, where everything would take ages to load, and I mean ages, like 10 mins to get to main menu. Then to load a license test would take around 15 mins. I fixed it by, firstly cleaning lense (to no avail) then adjusting the lense cog thingy, now it works perfect.

i have an old ps2 also SCPH-30001 model. it was the first one bought at my local walmart when ps2 first came out. i've never had any problems with mine. never cleaned it either. i've left it on for days lots of times.

for those that buy games/consoles/accesories from EBGames... read my signature.

Seriously, if you buy a PS2 (or any other console) there, ask for the "Extended Warranty" or "Product Replacement Plan"... the PRP covers anything that comes in the box with the console as well.

As soon as I get my next paycheck I'm definately going back to EBGames to add a 1 year PRP to my new slim PS2, which, btw... I got for $20 + tax, because of the PRP on my original PS2. The still let you do it until 14 days after you buy it.

It's gotten me three new controllers, and they don't ask questions about how it was damaged etc... you give them your busted crap, and they give you a new one free, on the spot. One of the controllers I returned was actually ran over by a truck... literally. They laughed and handed me a new one. Highly recommended.

Got GT4 last night in NZ, had initial issues getting it running, dvd is a gold backed one, clean as a whistle, it kept reverting back to the ps2 main screen. so turned on diagnostics and had little luck. I got it to work finally by once having it in an loaded to reset the ps2 and i got results so that was pleasing.

I noticed in the PAL aus/nz manual for GT4 it says for playstation models ****-30000 and ****-50000 series refer to loading instructions in your playstation 2 manual. I cant be bothered digging mine up but it may lead to resolution or help

my ps2 is a ****-30002 model
