Quick, but important question. After running into a problem with my standard 80gb hdd, I ordered a seagate 500gb. The thing I dont know though is, I see there is a thread about people wanting copy protection removed. Now, Im going to use the backup utility to back up my entire harddrive. Will GT5 savegames NOT BE ABLE to be backed up with the backup utility? I need to change my hdd, its going to die at any time.

There are two options, Backup and Data Transfer. When changing to a new HDD you need to use Data Transfer, that will include all of your copy protected saves and content as well.

Isnt Data transfer for transporting data to another PS3 in its entirety? So, using backup to an external Hdd, then replacing the 80gig with the 500gb and then using Restore and restoring the backed up data on the external hdd wont work?

The save is copy protected but if you do a backup I would think it the save would also be backed up. Don't quote me on that though.

When i did this from my 120gb to my 500gb it backed up all game save except my prologue save so did a back up of that separately. You have to reinstall game files and game patches

You cant copy GT5 save data seperatly. :/ I dont know what to do. I need to change my hdd ASAP. And now GT5 is copy protected. It should be backed up with backup utility, but I dont want it to think the new hdd that would be in there is from another ps3 and not restore it.

Not sure of the answer, but I'm interested in the outcome of this backup experiment. Do let us know how it turns out..

My new hdd is delivered Monday or Tuesday. And Im stressing over this. There are many other games that are copy protected, check your savegames. Press triangle and see details. Do those backup with the backup utility?

Here's the scoop:

1- Full back up utility to external HDD - Will restore EVERYTHING, included copy-protected files (such as GT5's) IF and ONLY IF the serial number of the PS3 receiving the back up (data restore) matches the original system's. In your case, since you'll restore the data to the same system you'll be fine.

2- Data transfer utility -- To another PS3 system - Will restore EVERYTHING but will delete copy protected saves from the original (sending) system. Non-copy protected saves will remain on both consoles.

I hope Coxis is right, as I need to upgrade my HDD from the dismal 40gb it came with (and which I can't fit any more into).

I can vouch for coxis. I have done a restore before and absolutely everything gets backed up and restored. I did it cause I took off the other os off my old ps3 when I got tired of linux. Just make sure you have a drive to back up to that is a little bigger than your current drive(so for you anything larger than 80gb should be perfect). I know I can't wait to get a new drive for my ps3. They just came out with 750gb drives with 7200rpm.

Cool. As soon as I get the new HDD, either tomorrow (Monday) or tuesday and Ive done the procedure, I'll update you. Hoping it all goes smoothly.

Question, to use the full backup utility, do i just connect my new HDD to the PS3 with a USB cabel, and then transfer? Or do i change the HDD in the PS3 to the new one, and connect the old HDD with a USB and transfer? Or do you do this in a totally different way?

You have to backup to a different drive. I've heard of people using their iPods, but I used a proper external myself. Once you've managed to take off all the screws and replaced the drives, restore onto your new drive from the external. It's real easy (screws aside) and because GT5 is installed already you shouldn't have any problems.

the backup utility will back even the protected gamesaves, BUT Guitar Hero World Tour. My own experience

I just upgraded my HDD from the 40gb to a 500gb the other day. I ran the full system backup onto a spare external hard drive. It took up only 16gb of space and after 40 minutes it was done. Swapped out the hard drive for the new one, had to go online and download the "system update" from playstation.com, installed the software and then ran the backup restore. Everything transfered fine! Cars and game saves where all there! Only scary thing is the trophy list seems to slowly restore itself... so if you see a few missing trophies just relax they will pop back up within a few hours. :nervous:

On a side note... The 500gb drive ended up with less then 400gb of useable space. (about 396gb if I remember correct) And make sure the spare drive you run the back up onto is running a FAT32 file system, otherwise the PS3 won't bother with it. :grumpy:

Will a faster HDD upgrade improve loading times? Or is the transfer rate governed by the PS3/GT5 programming?

Hook up external hdd to run backup. Replace the old hdd, than run restore.

To the OP.

I did the same as above. Back up first to a external drive and then run the restore after your new one is installed. I had to delete all my movies and songs to back up to a 40GB and then popped in my 640GB and ran the restore. Man I love having a huge HDD. :)

Guys, my PS3 YLOD around 3 months before GT5 came out, I did extensive research and have done both the restore on the same PS3 unit and the data transfer between different (my old and new) PS3s. So, I'm positive by personal experience and a lot of research that what I posted up there is 100% accurate. :)

I've done it several times and I lost absolutely no info.

Don't worry, the only scenario where you would lose your data is if you tried to restore your PS3's back up to a different PS3. If you do a back up and restore to the same PS3 or do a data transfer utility to a new one, you'll keep your GT5 data.

Coxis is right, ONE thing he did not mention is Trophies, if you have them and fully back up your game and fully restore it or in my case jump to a 640gb HD Western Digital and restore, NONE of your trophies will be brought over.
It meant nothing to me, but I know there are Trophy collectors out there.

Also a faster HD will improve loading times, but when it comes to spinning drives 5400 vs 7200, the 7200 generates more heat. So if you have a launch system like me I would opt for the 5400rpm drives. They are I think 1-2 tenths of a second slower if that matters.
The best drivers are obviously the SSD drives, but the price you pay per GB is insanely not worth it. Unless you've got the money to spend!

Trophies are stored on the PSN servers, not on your drive. The only thing you need to do is synchronize trophies before you do the final back up to not lose recently awarded trophies (Trophies are stored on your system until you synchronize them with the server).

I could swear I sync'd my trophies dozens of times and when I did a restore to the new drive, I started fresh with none.

Someone thats about to switch hard drives let me know, maybe it was something I did wrong.

Yeah sorry, I meant Backup with my earlier post. Shouldn't really give advice at 7am with no sleep :)

Anyway, it includes protected saves, and trophies are stored on the server as Coxis said. Signing into the same PSN ID and syncing will restore them.

When I replaced my HDD the guy I was speaking with said that there will be no difference between a 7200 and a 5400 because the PS3 will run them both at the 5400 the system is set up to run. He could be wrong, but it would make sense and can save you some money if you are thinking about a 7200.

I had all my trophies after I completed the transer to a 640GB.

If upgrading, I would suggest the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB. It's a regular 7200rpm drive, but includes a small SSD portion, and it's nearly as fast as an SSD, but at the price and size of a normal drive (it's about $100 for the 500GB).
