Maybe they will be using a dev version of the CAN-Gateway ECU "data logger", it would be perfect for getting a true scale map of the track with elevation, I know they are using it to get lap data but in my mind it would have a place in mapping tracks as well, all you would need is two laps, one up against one track edge then one on the opposite to get an accurate start for a track.

Imo the main benefit the laser scanning adds is not so much accuracy of the geography of the track edges (although it does that too) as it is accuracy of bumps in the road surface.
This is where the iracing circuits compare favourably with virtually all others.

Yh that makes sense, Racing games ( the good ones ) are getting to the point where people expect that kind of detail, it does make the difference.

More like the Bathurst 12 hour moving to FIA GT3 regs and gaining international recognition and entries recently, especially from factory backed Euro teams that are increasing it's draw

Unfortunately, as of 5 days ago, United Autosports withdraws McLaren MP4-12C entries from Bathurst 12 Hour :(
replaced with Audi R8 Ultra

Bathurst has been internationally well known for quite a while. Back in the group C and group A days touring car drivers used to come over from europe to compete. It even hosted a round of the short-lived group A WTCC.

Yes, iRacing quite literally scans the tracks with laser scanning technology. PD just do it the old fashioned way, 'scanning' the track by taking tons of photos, videos and likely GPS and other technical data from the track owners.

That's why iRacing tracks are some of the most accurate in the sim racing world. PDs are pretty good and fairly accurate but until they start laser scanning as well they won't be perfect.

Iracing also charge $15 USD for most tracks so its not like that data and technology comes cheap. Especially when you're trying to cram 50 odd tracks and 300+ cars into a game worth $60 USD for most punters. That's $20USD less than an annual iracing subscription before even getting to buying tracks and cars.

I know you're not having a pop at PD either btw, just raising the relative differences.

Erm, no. That technology has nothing to do with scanning a track, it simply logs the inputs of the vehicle. You couldn't make a track from that data alone.

Indeed, I was just speaking in a matter of fact manner. I'm aware laser scanning does not come cheaply.

Guys, I forgot to post this but 10 days ago I was driving back from Sydney to my home town of dubbo and I did a happy lap of the mount and saw something interesting a private company laser or gps scanning various spots around the too I watched this for about an hour as I was intrigued. The company was called something like "Lowe GPS and laser scanning". Now as I don't think that it was council related ( just my thoughts)

It wouldn't make much sense for PD to go out to the track and 'scan' the track manually then send a laser scanning company out to do it again 6 months later. The scanning company were probably working on behalf of someone else.

Was it a black and white striped truck?

I don't see why not. More data the better...

Because at that point, just lighting fire to piles of money would probably be more efficient.

Do we know if they actually scanned it when PD was there? I would assume they went in first to take pictures for use as a reference when doing the landscape. Then the scanners come in after to get the accuracy of the bumps in the track, etc. Mix the two together = complete track.

It is pure speculation that this is PD related etc BUT.....

Nope, it was a white ute with a canopy on the back with a cylinder looking thing on-top of the canopy.

Exactly

See this is my thinking as, if they did in fact take photos etc surely that wouldn't be enough information to produce data etc, if this company was working for PD GPS or Laser scanning would be way they would do it I'd assume taking two points and having the on-board computer measuring distance from each scan point.

Cause I watched this for about an hour one the unmarked ute would park in a spot and the other ute wit the machine on the roof would drive in what seemed to me in a circle like pattern in various spots in corresponding with other ute. It was late in the afternoon so who knows how long they were there or what spots that was done.

Could be iRacing people.

It would be good if PD laser scan all real world tracks for next GT game.

I thought this but I am pretty sure the iRacing folks use large tower like scanner with 2 beacons spread evenly apart. (I may be wrong but)

Well, we've already seen SimBin pictures from Bathurst, so I doubt they'll laser scan it now. We do know that Kunos wants to have all their tracks laser scanned and we haven't seen anything regarding Bathurst from them, so it's likely.

They do it like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcqLEIE8MBk

Is it similar to what you saw?

Could even be for sims that some racing teams use.

Anyway would be good if it is for GT series and will be awesome if the rumour of large number of tracks is true which could be achieved using such technology.

Well, I'm thinking Forza 5 personally.
Considering most of the other companies have already either scanned or completed the tracks, it makes sense T10 would. They do have a V8 Supercar license without the V8 tracks.

Either that or Codemasters is rescanning for Grid 2.

The guy had a Freudian slip. He watched the race so it was on his mind.... Just a word substitution slip. We all do this from time to time.

Truth is, Bathurst would be SWEET!

I was trying to find that video so my post didn't sound dumb lol

not exactly they had one vehicle with is what I assumed the laser assembly drive to a position in line with the second car stop there for 5ish minutes and then proceeded to move in another corresponding position in relatively the same distance as the first spot etc. afaik could see they had one marker (the white ute near the fence with an Apparatus on the roof and the other vehicle to take points of reference etc.

Which new track is to be sold in the coming DLC in your opinion? I am almost sure we' re getting one or two tracks because of the 100MB update. Only C7 proto's graphic model and sound doesn't reach so much size...

So, IMHO, Silverstone or Bathurst or Pikes Peak.

How do we know there will even be a new DLC coming? 100mb sounds about right for bug fixes and the car to me...

It is unlisted so maybe not easy to find.

Hopefully it was laser scanning track related and also work for a sim that we will be able to buy. If it is for GT, that would be awesome.

Exactly, PD never seem to really bother compressing their patches either, we've had some at 25Mb for one or two changes. I really don't see them releasing high profile, big selling tracks like this or Silverstone as DLC for a 2 year old game. They'll be saved for GT6 for sure.

Why would it be saved for GT6? Assuming 2 or 3 million people buy the dlc for $5 now, and that's a fair amount if money and I can't see how it would impact GT6 sales 2 years from now.

2 or 3 million wouldn't buy it because there aren't that many people still playing a 2 year old game. You need new content to promote your next game with, it's no good giving all your best stuff away in DLC for the old game.

I need to proof read more.

Regardless, I think there will be enough new stuff/advancements for gt5 to hit target sales 2 years from now. In the meantime they should be releasing as much dlc as they can, which will only help pay for all the new improvements we want in gt6.
