GTLXR,
That's as best as I can translate it as English & French are my 2nd & 3rd languages. I tried to the best of my abilities...If there's any glaring mistakes feel free to correct me.

I did find the blurb about 12-20 cars online...I actually missed it the first time around & had to look for it. It's on top of page 51 under "A Retenir" & underneath has the bulleted items that everyone has posted. I'm assuming that this information pertains to GT5.

I also found this interesting on page 55.

"Obviously, at this stage of development, nothing is finalized."

"The next GT will be, in fact, GT4 in Full HD with around 750 cars & 50 tracks...Two versions are planned, classic & premium. We will equally find an online garage, career mode, one on one challenges, chat, spectator mode completely online, equipments for each model, etc. We could "create" a GT to their own tastes and enter clubs to share different experiences."

And yeah, the article has a lot of filler stuff, mostly talking about

-KY driving a GT3 to the office.
-the fact that they're offices are absolutely crazy! They have pretty much everything you need to live there...kitchens, showers, bedrooms etc.
-how PD was not hiding anything when they arrived, all of the programmers' computers were on, showing cars & tracks, etc.
-The Indianapolis blurb on page 55
-how they have files, videos, & reviews on every car from the Peugeot 406 to the Ford GT.
-how they have pro drivers like Benoit Treluyer test drive their product.
-6 months of work for one car.

That pretty much sums it up.

Sony does NOT have the rights to F1 cars anymore. Their license has expired and they no longer posses the right to use them. Therefore it would strictly FORBIDDEN for Polyphony Digital to use F1 cars in GT5!

I would also be interested if you could post a link to some definitive proof on Sony loosing the F1 licence, as I have done some wide ranging searches on just that subject and not found anything that is 100% official.

As far as I am aware the licence will expire at the end of the 2007 season, as most official F1 games come out around half way through. Not saying you are wrong on this but I would like to see something official given the rather strong tone you have used here. However I would also back up what others have said in this regard as both Rfactor and TRD have featured F1 cars, you see the licence is for Formula 1, not the cars specifically.

To also bring back up another point, that of weather and how quickly it can change. I've just got back from a race meeting at Castle Combe and to say the weather was changeable would be a huge understatement. Even during the course of 10 lap races it changed from sunshine to quite heavy rain and after one of the GT races the drivers talked of it raining on one part of the circuit and not on the other side. I should have some pictures and video up in the next few days that will (I hope) show some of this, keep an eye out for the link in my sig.

I forgot about F1. I just looked on planete-gt & here's what they're saying (I didn't really read that blurb).

"The problems with F1 is not very clear. Do they have the rights or not? Apparently, they have the rights to the older F1 vehicles..."

Well SCEE just recently released F1 CE with all of the cars & drivers so that would seem to say that Sony does have the rights doesn't it.

I read this entire thread. I'll save my opinions for official news as its very confusing. It almost seems like GT5 does really exist..... but GTHD is in full bloom. I'll just wait and not get excited for anything.

But am a GT fan and would buy GTHD if it does exist. Sick of looking at GT4 on a HDTV. Plus something is better than nothing.

^^ Yeah the F1:CE is not only 2006 but that too, very early 2006. I read or rather heard in one of the video reviews to this game (probably gamespot's) that because Sony doesnt have the current licence of F1 the roster is not up to date and even the cars themselves are the cars from early 2006 F1 season (as in, initially in the season, many manufacturers used just the upgraded versions of their cars from 2005) and the cars in F1:CE are also these old cars.. Not sure if it's any true, but there could be some weight to what isamu said.. I dont have this video review that I am talking about so I cant say. Although it could be some preview from other site aswell, I am not 100% sure on this..

F1:CE has Michael Schumacher & Juan Pablo Montoya, it's the 2006 season is it not?

Regardless, it is an awesome game!

I would imagine at some point in development they would have to say OK these are the cars we are using so there wouldn't be a last min rush to update the cars.

The game itself came out in 2007 though.

^^ Could be, it just got delayed?? But you can never say.. (until you know for sure and give a definate source to the same).. Infact Pro Evolution Soccer : Winning Eleven 07 came out in 07 but has the rosters's of 2006 (around the time of world cup 06)..

The F1 series games have almost always been released around about half way through the season (July-ish), and featured the grid, etc from the start of the season. That F1:CE was released in 2007 and still featured the 2006 starting info is not a major surprise given that it was a PS3 title (launch in Europe) and almost certainly was under time pressures.

While I am not saying that Sony still have the licence, what I do question is if they have lost it then why has no-one announced that they have it. It may be a case that currently no-one has the licence and the FIA are waiting to issue it.

However until I see something official (and not the rumour and speculation that is all you will actually find on the web on this topic and believe me I have looked) I'm not willing to state that Sony don't have it. After all to announce F1 2007 currently would harm sales of F1:CE in a huge way, not something that Sony would want to do, so we may get a release later than normal with very little advance notice.

I certainly think that if any of the developers with strong links to MS had obtained the licence that they would not exactly be keeping quiet about it.

Well, I can tell you all right now that some kind of open wheel racer will be in the next GT5.
Look at GT4's "formula gt"... Doesn't that set off some alarms with you all? I mean, there's nothing to indicate that the car is actually a formula 1 car except for the appearance and name (which is a vague "formula" title with no display of the official F1 stamp).

My guess is that another iteration of the Formula GT car will be in GT5. A generalized open wheel F1 look-alike created by PD just to get around licensing agreements.

Remember, you can create your own car and use it in a game without any problems (especially with the sort of designs we are talking about).
Face it, an open wheel racer has no real identification to use as a distinguishing mark. Only official names and sponsors will bring up legal issues and as with the FGT of GT4, PD can paste on a few of the brands they already have rights to and boom- another FGT!

So to wrap it up...
PD is not going to have an official F1 car or anything in relation to F1.
However, they don't need it to ensure open wheel racing will be present. :sly:

That said, the Ferrari subject in this thread is interesting...
My hopes for that alone are to see the F430 & F430cs, F40, F50, a few of the older models (275, etc etc) and maybe a PD F430 dream car (F430LM)... (same hopes for RUF  )

If they can model 800 cars in the first place, there interior shouldn't be that hard.

I can't wait, I'm buying the PS3 very soon now. :D

I guessing that the interior is just as difficult as the exterior, possibly more so. It may be smaller in physical size but theres a lot of detail to get right in car interior. It's not just a steering wheel and a flat face behind it covered in textures like in some old racing games.

And yeah, the article has a lot of filler stuff, mostly talking about

-KY driving a GT3 to the office.

-how they have pro drivers like Benoit Treluyer test drive their product.
-6 months of work for one car.

That pretty much sums it up.

I've heard most of that before... However, I really hate to hear "6 months per car" since there are so many crap cars in GT4. 👎
Likewise, it really bothers me that it takes them so long when they have a office that can increase workplace productivity by so much. Finally, it's really disappointing to see they weren't hiding anything yet we (the consumers) still don't get half as much media coverage as we should. :indiff:

Well then lets just do the math 800 cars 400 of them being skylines they have half of them done then. (Copy) (Paste) (Copy) (Paste) get the Ideal.

I'll start work on it as soon as you give me the funding then.
As for surround sound, i already have that and only paid $40 bucks for it brand new.
It sounds very good, even has 5.1 dolby digital.
But there are very few of you that even realise my rant for what it was.
Basically your all going to pay upwords of $60 BUCKS (not including downloadable content) to play a rehashed non physics fixed, non sound fixed GT4 that's now going to be "prettier", instead of being hugely dissapointed in that fact.
Yes there was some good news, no it wasn't what i wanted to hear, because it sounds like PD just doesn't know what to do.
That last part about Kaz asking if we really want more in depth tuning really irks me.
Is he kidding me? seriously?
Theres more but why even bother, as now GT5 won't be out until late 2009-2010, that's pretty sad, i don't care about what folk think of PD's programming time constraints as they don't work for them, they don't know.
Instead of porting GT4 over and rehashing it, thus using valuable programming time, they should be stepping up and having the entire team on the next real GT.
Looks like i'm going to be spending more time outdoors for about 3-4 more years as i'm not buying a remake of their worst game ever made, racing wise.
Guess my idea of hunting in auto salvage yards to find cars to work on will keep me occupied.
The only good thing's about those updates would be if the rehash got the 12-20 online grid and the weather for those folk who can go online, as it looks like offline is still going to suck.

It is truly astonishing how many conclusions you have made based on very little factual information on a game that isn't close to being released.

It does make one wonder what your real agenda is, especially as you are a new member who seems to be on a mission to discredit GT5 on little more than a few tid bits of info that could change at any time.

*Sniff* *Sniff*
Is that a troll I smell?

PD probably hasn't had there hands on the actual full blown PS3 development pack much longer than some of us has had our PS3's.

Do I want a half assed GT5, well Hell no, would I like an updated GT4 to hold me over until there is an all out GT5? Hell yes!!
People (well xbox fanboys) have cried about how weak the release titles are, but those were built long before anyone knew what the true capibilities of the PS3 would be so they don't use anywhere near the full capibilities of the PS3, it was the same way with the 360 but those same people convienently forget about that fact.

I have upgraded to HDTV (70" HDTV looks amazing!) & I have a killer home theatre that costs a heck of a lot more than $40 & I want a game that will start using the capibilities of my home theatre.
If that is GT5 prologue, GT4 v2, GTHD or what ever they are going to call it I will spend the $60 to play it while I wait for the full blown GT5.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet. This information (from Joypad) has been published for a few days now, but why hasn't any online gaming sites or other gaming mags called PD to confirm the information that we've just read?

It didn't take very long for all the gaming sites to report the availability of the interior view, why is this any different?

I'm not saying that Joypad's journalism isn't credible, but I'd be more convinced if more than one mag/online site has published this information...And yes, I've been looking (partly b/c I'm not too happy about the GTHD/downloading info)!

**In other words, I want the info confirmed from more than one source. What can I say? It's my news background...I like fact checking!!!

JP: You've already signed Ferrari, can we also hope to see other marques like Porsche & Lamborghini?
KY: The whole product range of Ferrari will be present, but concerning P & L, I can't really comment as long as they've not been signed.

JP: Other plans? What else will be new?
KY: I have a lot of ideas. You'll have to wait for some surprises! I have already said that there will be classic race circuits, but also one or some new city tracks.
Oh my Lord...

Do I want a half assed GT5, well Hell no, would I like an updated GT4 to hold me over until there is an all out GT5? Hell yes!!

If that is GT5 prologue, GT4 v2, GTHD or what ever they are going to call it I will spend the $60 to play it while I wait for the full blown GT5.
Exactly. I was one of the very early posters that was talking about an upgraded GT4 for the PS3 if GT5 was going to take too long. I'm still plenty excited about getting it. No other game has put me behind the wheel of a virtual car like Gran Turismo 4 has. I'll find out how well Turn 10 did with Forza 2 this weekend, hopefully. But I'm not drooling for Forza 2 like I am Gran Turismo on the PS3.

If I recall correctly, then with the bonus DVD that came with FT4P, PD says they took 1 whole month to put a car in the game.

How is it possible that it takes PD 6 months to make 1 car now? This really puzzles me, and I hope that some things were lost in translation (or the like).

The info sounds promising, I was abit annoyed though when it was damage modeling for only race cars, other games can do damage modeling on all their in game cars so why cant PD? I guess if they do the modeling really accurately it would take too long to do all the cars but I was hoping for damage on ever day cars like on Forza 2.

The Ferrari info sounds good, including the F1 cars! , I hope they take this license to town!!

As for damage realism..... I would really like damage on this level, real crash simulation of MG Rovers..... now thats damage! Sorry if they are abit big...

h3avym3tal,

Like I said earlier, I want another publication, whether online or in print, to backup (or refute) what Joypad has published.

Here's what their article says:

L'annee derniere, lorsque le studio a recu les specifications de la PS3, il a apparu evident qu'il fallait refaire l'ensemble des voitures et des circuits. En effet, la puissance de la machine offrait de nouvelles possibilites dans l'exploitation des details. Les hommes de Polyphony ont donc remodilise chaque vehicule en y associate l'interieur.
Resultat: 6 mois de travail pour une voiture.

Last year, when the studio received the specifications of the PS3, it was obvious that they needed to redo both the cars & tracks. In fact, the power of the machine offered new possibilties in the working details. The men of Polyphony, therefore, remodeled each vehicle & its interior.
The result: 6 months of work for one car.

Robin i dont think there is enough computer power on earth to do those calculations at 1080p60. I believe those calculations dont render in real time like fancny HDRI/Ray tracing cgi. it has to be frame by frame calculation and it requires every bolt, nut, glued on piece of material to be modeled. That level is impossible but scaled down it can be faked.

For me, graphical damage is simply aesthetic, and while it would be a nice bonus, is not nearly as important as damage that impacts the performance of the car, and thus not only offer a more realistic racing environment, but prevent those that take short cuts off the track and ride the rails to get the fastest lap and race times from ruining the integrity of various leaderboards.

So even if PD can't do graphical damage for the road cars, I will continue to hold out hope that they will implement some kind of performance penalty for those who drive off the track.

As it is now, the fastest possible lap times in GT:HD are from those wildly driving off the track and riding along the track rails at top speed.

Frankly I wouldn't mind if they also made it such that if you went too fast over a rise in the track and go airborne, that you should risk damaging your car's suspension. As it is now, in GTHD you can go 185 mph over the two largest undulations in the Ferrari 599 getting serious air time and then come back down on to the track with enough force that if there was realistic damage the car would have been destroyed.

Please PD... give us optional damage for all cars, even if it isn't graphical damage. This would allow those that do not want realistic driving, and prefer flying over hills and riding rails the opportunity to do so, just as it would allow those that want a more realistic racing environment, were skillful driving techniques and approaches are rewarded.

I'd rather see the license system used to stop bad driving... Brushing the rails and slamming the wall just before the line are easily ignored by a final time (although it still cost a bit of time, it will not ruin the lap).

I'd love to see good, accurate damage but I'd also love to have a penalty system end laps before damage becomes an issue. 👍

I've always had a taste for clean racing over dirty racing and simply adding damage isn't enough to ensure clean racing is the standard.
What I would like is something that would stress four-wheels-on racing. 👍

Of course, like I said... Damage + the license system = very happy racers! :sly:

Hi,

afc2112 already translated one part of the interview. Here is the version of the first part of the report. Full interview version will come later.

Going to POLYPHONY’s, meet with Kazunori YAMAUCHI, try the future Gran Turismo…An unthinkable program, nevertheless… Narrative about an extraordinary day !!

Report by Laurent Deheppe / Photographer So Kuramachi

It’s definitely a PORSCHE 911 GT3 that just turned at the street corner. Behind the wheel, Kazunori YAMAUCHI, father of the Gran Turismo Series. It is 14:15 in the Japanese capital, and the car disappears in a spotless-white building’s elevator. A few seconds later, it joins the two FORD GT owned by the boss on the building’s roof.
One month ago, POLYPHONY agreed in opening their doors to us. Since then, we (really) savor that chance. The PORSCHE just stopped. Jeans, orange T-Shirt, “Kaz” humbly greets us. We learn that at the same time he had to go to an important meeting, and go on holiday after that. But the master is HERE… just for us. We get excited before the studio entrance. Put under stress and suspicious too : will we be able to shoot everything ?? Will the interview with Kazunori last more than a mere quarter of hour ?? Will the program be respected ?? We get in the elevator.

Three levels below, we penetrate in the “saint of the saints”. An industrial, loft-type place. Our photographer, translator and pilot are waiting for us. For the occasion, we asked Benoît Tréluyer, Formula Nippon Champion, SUPER GT NISSAN driver, to join us. “This is the first I ever come to POLYPHONY’s. What a crazy place !!”, he says happily.
The POLYPHONY studio is a one-of-a-kind, that’s for sure. An incredible studio, where all is about cars. Automotive magazines are piled everywhere, shelves are full of books dedicated to four wheel machines, replicas are scattered over all the desks, without mentioning helmets, sketches… A true hymn to the automobile.

VISIT OF THE PLACE

15:00. The tour begins. Kazunori Yamauchi guides us. What an honor !! Through the alleys, we feel we are experiencing something unique. We don’t know where to look first ! In one of the boxes, I notice a “Gran Turismo 5” logo… No doubt about it : they’re not going to hide anything from us !! All the monitors are on, we see the new circuits, the new cars, future packaging... We don’t miss a single bit of this show, totally different from our standard visits : accurate timing, pre-defined planning, a little drink, and back to France with, most of the time, strict directions for the article.
The boss tells us then that the studio can live in absolute self-sufficiency. To prove his word, he opens the door to a big glassed room : music instruments, self-improvement devices on a platform, at the back a library full of books, magazines and DVD... “Everything here is made for the well-being of everyone. Most of the time, at the finish of a game, which is a very difficult period, my teammates choose to stay here. There is a kitchen, showers, rooms, and even a washing machine !!”

The tour continues. Kazunori opens some drawers, takes some flyers and explains that in order to model a car, they rely essentially on the maker specifications.
We learn that all specs of all cars in the world are preciously arranged, classified and stored. From the PEUGEOT 406 to the FORD GT, including the brand-new AUDI TT, all cars are here. Since our arrival, our attention goes to a huge glass cage lighted by blue bulbs. Kazunori tells us that it is a server (the fourth biggest server in all Japan !), processing data on 24-hour cycle. Auto makers come here as well to store and consult. No entry without a pass. Little secret : as this room is permanently air-conditioned, the master, fine wine lover, stores his bottles in it. A weird cave indeed...

As we progress in the building, we notice that every hall is customized. Team members have their own space, with an average of three to four monitors per desk, but also mementos from their numerous travels around the world, such as this shirt, dedicated by S. LOEB, or Eddie Irvine’s helmet...

They are 120 workers here, 120 to conceive the future Gran Turismo. No one abandoned the team.
since the very beginning. On the contrary, the team has bloomed : data-processing specialist (such as this former IBM employee, now technical person in charge), graphic designers, game designers... “This is why we are able to manage a big project like Gran Turismo, explains Kaz. The team is a true family.”

THE CHALLENGE

Time to relax... On purpose, the studio installed two simulators. “Match” of the day : Benoît Tréluyer VS Kazunori Yamauchi. After racing several laps, Benoît found the right rythm, making 1’10. “It’s pretty good, he says. You really feel the difference when putting the tires off-road ! And the graphism is simply amazing !!”. Time to race. Both choose the FERRARI F599 GTB on the GT-HD track; 8/10, advantage Kazunori. Benoît talks with him afterwards. Kazunori often invites SUPER GT drivers to test the game. Thus, he is very attentive to the Frenchman’s speech. In fact, Benoît had a hard time in feeling the braking limit. Yamauchi tells him that the current accessories (controllers and wheels) are not advanced enough yet. We didn’t be able to understand everything, as they spoke Japanese !

NÜRBURGRING

As everyone is doing a pause, I decide to visit the studio another time. I seem to be part of the place, as no one suspects nor even notice me. This reportage is definitely placed under absolute confidence. In front of Kaz’’s office, there are four monitors with one steering wheel. Behind, 10 PS3 development kits and three big computers. The first monitors is about 46-in wide, while the others are a little smaller. They tell me that this is where the boss tests Gran Turismo. The four monitors are of different brands, to compare the game quality. A mate tells me that “When he has some time left, or when he wants to check something, he comes here to play”. I dare ask : “Is there Gran Turismo playing now ?” The answer is right, and I am allowed to sit in the master’s seat on the Nürburgring with a SUPER GT NISMO Fairlady Z. Incredible... I am about to play the new GT !
Of course, at that level of achievement, everything’s not finished yet. And Kazunori told us that there will be not two, but actually four positions of driving, with the ‘bonnet’ view (introduced in GT4), but also a view of the cockpit with the complete instrument panel. That’s a good news !!! I plunge in the curves with an indefinable joy. The wheel reacts perfectly, the car oversteers at the slightest excess of throttle, and the environment is as beautiful as in real life.
The Nürburgring is highly detailed, except in the higher part of the screen, (as said before, the game is not finished yet). Last year, Kazunori had the opportunity to drive in the real Nürburgring. He says that after playing the game, he found all his marks in the real circuit. Perhaps this is why this 22 km-long circuit is the first to offer Full-HD display. Speaking of HD, the next GT will be an enhanced version of GT4 in Full-HD with 750 cars and 50~ circuits, all downloadable. Two versions are planned : Classic and Premium. There also will be an online garage, a Career Mode, one-to-one challenge, and a chat service, equipments for each car, a fully-online Spectator Mode, and many more. Each player will be able to “create” his own GT according to his/her tastes, and even be a member of a club to share his experience. The online feature of GT-HD will be used as a work base for GT5.
Regarding car handling, it seems that the biggest work has been made in the overall balance to offer maximum realism. ~44 km later, it is time to go back the main menu. A mate takes the controller : the image is black, with lines all over the screen, everything in Japanese. Impossible for us to understand anything, except “Indianapolis”. One of the most famous circuits in the world, in the future GT ? The question remains unanswered...

THE ENCOUNTER

The head-to-head with the master is at hand. But prior to answer to all our questions, a little photo session ! We take the “Japanese room”, genuine pot-pourri of the Japanese lifestyle : pure lines, relaxing lights, no needless stuff, no computers, no phone. Yamauchi gladly plays the game. 30 minutes later, we get THE photo. Now : the revelations !! The interview lasted one hour. Kazunori showed incredible availability and patience.
20:00 already... Benoît leaves the studio with a PS3 and a wheel for a daily training. As for us, we leave too, convinced that days like the one we lived today a pretty rare in one’s life...

Many thanks to Greg, Tom, Ben, Mamiko, Tsubasa and Mayumi

ENCADRES

DRIVING SEAT (p. 52)

Lady Luck sometimes smiles at you !! Prior to our arrival, the possibility for us to test GT was not part of the schedule. Nevertheless, we were able to run on the Nürburgring with a GT500 Fairlady Z. On a 46-in Full-HD monitor, sensations are obvious. GT-HD was designed to be playable with a steering wheel; therefore each version is played with different cars, to obtain maximum comparison data. In the same way, four monitors from four different brands are plugged online to rate the game quality on each monitor.

CREATION (p. 53)

Modeling the cars’ cockpit is a very crucial step in making the game. Each developer can rely on the maker data, but on press photographs too.
This will be the first GT ever to offer the cockpit view ; a titan’s work, given the number of cars.

PUTTING IN FORM (p.53)

Last year, when the studio received the PS3 technical specifications, the necessity to remake all car and circuits became mandatory. The power of the PS3 offered a new way to expose the details. The POLYPHONY team have then remodeled every single car, and added the interior cockpit rim. Result : 6-month work for ONE car !!

DRIFTING (p. 54)

One of the new features of GT-HD is the Drift Mode. The goal is to make the car slide for as long as possible to obtain points. This discipline is very famous in Japan, and according to Yamauchi, this mode will be particularly accurate in the future GT. The reason ? It will provide to the game a new breath, as it will not be played only to make time records.
On top of that, you will be able to see the best drifters of the world thanks to the PSN (PlayStation Network).

BENOÎT TRELUYER (p. 54)

Formula 3 driver since 2001, B. Tréluyer decides to go to Japan, where he wins the F3 World Cup in his first year of competition. He next engages to a double program, Nippon Formula and SUPER GT along with the Team Impul.
Nippon Formula Champion this year, Benoît will drive for the third time at the Le Mans 24-Hour Race in one of the Pescarolo-Judd cars.

TEST DRIVER (p. 55)

Kazunori Yamauchi is a perfectionist. He says that throughout the game development, he asks many professional drivers to come to test the various versions of GT. Among the list, we find Japanese drivers racing, like Benoît Tréluyer, in the GT500 class of the SUPER GT Championship.
According to Tréluyer, Gran Turismo is the best simulation racing video game for consoles. He praises the car handling, matching that of real life driving, especially the mechanical grip, as well.
However, Kaz’ was the fastest that day !!
