No, I'm comparing vinyl to (low grade 128k) mp3, and the limitations of that format.

Because of the limitations of the PS3, PD has their hands tied and has to dial down the fidelity of the engine sounds. The PS3 can't handle the graphics and physics demands that GT now has, along with high fidelity engine sounds. When Kaz said that the engine sounds in GT5 were too real, I think there was something lost in translation. I think he meant that the engine sounds that they recorded were too real sounding for the PS3 to handle.

As for vinyl being dubbed to digital, a record needs to be burned to a DVD (data disc) in WAV or FLAC in very large file sizes, like 2-3 gigs or so. Yes, vinyl can be dubbed to be burned to a CD. But, it doesn't sound as good as the larger file sizes.

Games such as Battlefield 4 sound fantastic in 7.1, far more dynamic than any PS3 game I've heard. I have to believe the sound files are much more dynamic in B4. The only other PS4 game I have access to is NFS Rivals, I'm not impressed with this game at all, visually or sonically.

@jimipitbull, I have to think that we are on the same page.

I believe it is all related to the loudness war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

For the most part I think GT5 sounds fine - providing the audio settings are correct and you are using a decent sound system. The car sounds have not been processed with limiters and compressors to make it seem louder.

Forza/NFS etc, I believe the audio is processed a lot more, compressed and limited, almost like it has been mastered for CD. People like it because it sounds louder. Louder sounds better through their crappy TV speakers, cheap surround sound system, budget headphones etc.

damn nice trees...

I could be wrong but it sounds like the cones are making noise as they hit the lunar surface. Noise...in a vacuum...:confused:
Fair point, except I could only hear very muffled sounds when the rover hits the cones - likely the result of sound conducted through the rover and so through to the helmet where it could be translated to sound - so like GT-Roadie says. Maybe it was a conjuction of the rover impacting another at the same time another cone hit the surface that gave the impression.

Hardware limitations, vinyl vs 128k mp3, which sounds better? That's right, vinyl. There will be no room for excuses on the PS4, PERIOD.

Well, if you are relating PS4 to mp3, then the sounds will be compressed, we wont have the dynamic range of vinyl.

First of all:
Please stop the Vinyl/mp3/CD comparison. It has nothing to do with what is happening here and as always discussions about the technical side of audio are filled with misinformation.

Secondly:
The dynamics of a game sound have little to do with fidelity of individual sounds and a lot with how the game's engine mixes those sounds. The dynamics mostly come from the relation in volume between the background atmosphere and (in the case of Battlefield 4) gunshots.

I am not sure what the reason is the GT sounds sound so bad, but I assume it has something to do with how the samples are implemented in the audio engine and how that engine processes them (to get the 'right' sound at different RPMs for example). Whatever it is, there is a serious limitation.

Stuck in "D", similar to some of the beginner GT4: Prologue licence test.

Well not to be Mr GT Pedantic, the first test in GT4 prologue has a speed limiter set at 50km/h which is at the top of
First gear. I do see what you mean though.;)

Thanks so much for the vids !

I'm now waiting to know what this already famous Day One Patch will add on the game. At this point, many satisfactions, and still hating most of the standard cars modelisations.
