First of all:
Please stop the Vinyl/mp3/CD comparison. It has nothing to do with what is happening here and as always discussions about the technical side of audio are filled with misinformation.

Secondly:
The dynamics of a game sound have little to do with fidelity of individual sounds and a lot with how the game's engine mixes those sounds. The dynamics mostly come from the relation in volume between the background atmosphere and (in the case of Battlefield 4) gunshots.

I am not sure what the reason is the GT sounds sound so bad, but I assume it has something to do with how the samples are implemented in the audio engine and how that engine processes them (to get the 'right' sound at different RPMs for example). Whatever it is, there is a serious limitation.
Great explanation! And it's quite obvious the machine sound we are hearing is over biasing the engine sound and not the exhaust, further exaggerated by camera positioning. In fact the exhaust seems completely localized to the rear view in most cars.

It's like a system that was perfect on paper, flawed in application. Likely invented to enhance transmission noise as that made the cars sound more authentic a few generations ago. When I put my head under the hood of my Z it does sound like a sewing machine!

Just use the exhaust note, muffle it a bit for interior view, turn mechanical engine noise down from 10-3, call it a day.

Not the best sound, but the grumble is welcome. As is that sunset!![/qu

Is the sense of speed to grip totally off or is just me?

Watch him come into turn 3&4 the cutting. He comes in way too hot, brakes while giving it turning input and saves it right before what should have been understeer right into the wall.

It's the same here.

This is a 1971 Ferrari. Probably on sport hard tires. Watch him come down Graham Hill turn 3.

Just seems off.

That's why I didn't like the GT6 demo very much. Sense of speed versus understeer did not feel right at all.

How the hell does a GT500 outrun an FXX?

AI difficulty.

The game looks beautiful. I also noticed how the player was able to out brake the car in front and manage to keep car on track. Seen that a lot in racing games. It depends on the car ahead.
