Sub zero.
<-- AE86 is my favourite car and yes I love Initial D. But I don't only like the car for Initial D, generally my favourite cars are old blocky JDM cars. I love Cressida, Cresta, Gloria, Crown, S12, R30.... list goes on. :)

Subzero, AE86 have been one of the most sought after cars in my country. Really clean ones would command more money than they costed new, this was long before drifting or initial-D made them even more sought after.

It's light weight, responsive, practical, reliable and RWD, it also came with a very good plate LSD as standard in U.K. and Ireland. It was only available as a levin hatchback here, but with the amount of Japanese imports you can get any style now, I wouldn't be surprised if Ireland has more Japanese AE86 than anywhere outside Japan. Most people I know who owned one, have bought another after owning something more powerful and newer, including myself.

Symphony of seriously uncool.

"Oh so you drive a Toyota Corolla. That's a good, honest car."

"No this is a special Corolla, it's much more expensive than a normal one."

"Oh is it fast?"

"Not really, no."

"Is it luxurious?"

"Very much no."

"Then why is it special?"

"Well there was this anime/manga that was really popular... Basically when I drive around 20-something men with Naruto shirts and guys with tuned Civics will point and stare."

Not a chance.

This is what the Corolla is known for in Finland, F-cup rallycar. THIS is the reason why they're rare and expensive there.

AE86s are also popular in Irish rallying, it had a cult following before Shuichi Shigeno drew his first piece of concept art for Initial D.

I think it's cool, it was often my first choice when I started a new career in Gran Turismo 3. I think I even tried tuning it for the dirt tracks, too. :D

Get outta here Z-Man. You favored Pontiac Aztec, because Walter White drove it. :D

If you think this lightweight, rwd, analog hatch is only cool because of anime or drifting then you're missing the point by so much I'm not even interested in explaining it any further. Cool but not for the anime or best motoring.

From an era of Toyota when they made fairly interesting cars, rather than being defined by how dull they became. For that, this makes it a fairly cool car. It doesn't get sub-zero though, and almost gets boot out of being cool, because of the JDM mad tyte drifter crowd that obsesses over this car.

Barely keeps the cool.

It's not cool. You have to explain to the uninformed what makes your Toyota Corolla so special.

Aside from being RWD it's standard 1980s econobox fare, nothing good about that. Nothing "wrong" with it either. Meh.

If modified correctly (or left bone stock), this is a nice ride.

However, they can just be ruined beyond recognition just as easliy.

Cool, but not subzero.

Funny how the coolness of this car is so dependent on the majority of the community around it... Although it's almost sad to think of how many hatches have been modified to look like the Initial D AE86. It looks great, but it's still a modification.

I'd rate it between Meh and Cool as it's from a time of simplicity and has character. But at the same time, in it's age, it could be viewed as a "crappy beater econobox." I'll be considering this vote as if it was stock. I'll vote cool. (Pop-up headlights are always a plus)

Modifications are always uncool?
I wouldn't say modifications are always uncool. But I find that it kind of takes away from the original character the car had when it was stock. Sure you can make a car into a "beast" (for good or bad), but the car just isn't what it was from the factory.

I hang out with a group of 240SX guys who love bashing their cars at drift events and doing engine swaps and what not. Though it can be fun, I just can't help but wonder just how many factory spec cars are left... I really would like to keep my own collection of these "tuner" cars to keep stock and enjoy them for what they are and not mess with them. Can only wonder how many stock RX-7s, Supra's, GT-R's, etc. will be left.

Oh and an answer to the first post.

I did find a picture of a stock hatch. :D

I love Initial D and I know the story back to front, but looking at the AE86 objectively, it's really an unspectacular car. It looks quite neat for its age, but that's about it. You watch the anime thinking it's faster than a Veyron, but you drive it and it's just another Corolla. So meh it is.

I really wanted one when I was 14, you can certainly make them cool and it is a very nice platform to get into motorsports. With that said, I had to go with meh as in base shape it really is just a corolla, an economy car with the sole purpose of moving people around. Like I said though, they are very versatile and can be made quite cool.
