Applying Clarkson logic, this is cool. It is a great car, it isn't a rebadged Passat, it's a rebadged A6. It doesn't look flashy, it doesn't draw attention, it isn't a cocks car. It's like the volvos are on the cool wall- nothing special, just great. And nobody would ever know your a car's dude.

Ew, a rebadged Audi! That makes it worse, as it now fails the "Far too close to something Forza2.0 might have liked" test.

XP

It's a nothing.... shouldn't even qualify for awesomeness. It's a rebadged Passat with nothing going for it, except being a rebadged Passat.

Not quite. I have an issue of Autocar where they tested the Superb against an Audi A6 at double the price, a 7-Series at double that price and a Bentley Flying Spur at double that price. The idea was to find the best luxury car.

The Skoda won. Judged on all solely objective means, it was the most comfortable, the quietest and had the most space front and rear. And it did all that for a fraction of the price of the others, which makes you wonder what you're paying for.

You could say that the only thing the Skoda doesn't have going for it is image.

Which is true. Which is why it gets an "uncool" from me. Excellent car, not a cool one.

Doesn't it stand to reason that the Passat would do the same thing? I know nothing about Skodas (except the Roomster), so I'm curious as to the actual differences between the Passat and Superb.

The Superb is bigger and more overtly oriented towards being luxurious. It's less of a sales-rep car than the Passat, though as someone mentioned it is a bit "minicab" (though far less so than the Octavia). And I suspect, though haven't checked, that the Superb is still cheaper than the Passat. And in my personal opinion, it looks distinctive, wheras the Passat looks bland/borderline ugly.

That said, I wouldn't say that's necessarily a bad thing. Some minicabs local to me include: Chrysler 300C, Volkswagen Phaeton, Mercedes S-Class, Toyota Prius. From this I can only conclude that virtually anything can be a minicab these days so I don't see it as a slur on the Skoda.

Uncool, It just doesn't do anything for me. I like the way it looks, but than again if it drove past me on the road(which is impossible) I wouldn't give it a second glance.

Uncool. Lots of the "okay" air hanging around it, but nothing is really astounding about it that wants me to push it into cool.

It's a bit of a nerd, and nerds are cool. It's also pretty handsome, and it's a Skoda... therefore, cool in my opinion. The name adds a certain je ne sais quoi as well.

I actually like the car a lot. It doesn't try to be flashy or gaudy but instead is comfortably reserved. It sets out to an inexpensive, comfy, attractive, spacious sedan with a funky trunk and nothing else. With other manufactures claiming that their cars are sportier , quicker its refreshing to see a car comfortable doing it's own thing. That's pretty cool in my opinion.

I.....like the styling...(?) :guilty:

Nice styling != Coolness. I think a lot of Ferrari's look awesome, but for the most part they aren't cool.

Maybe it does to him.

It shouldn't.

Whatever, I'm pretty close to disbanding the cool wall any way since I think it is nothing more then a joke now. Either that or I'm just going to rename it the "styling wall".

If anyone is interested shoot me a PM and we can talk.

Yes, Joey. I like alot of styling from Ferraris too - but styling also paints a picture of how hard the car is trying. Some of the Italian supercars, while having nice styling, look like they're trying too hard - this doesn't. Toronado is quite right. Different people have different criteria as too how they vote, otherwise the voting patterns would be the exact same - and where's the variety and discussions in that?
Sure - the performance figures are down a it, but its based off a Passat, which I think is cool, and like Touring Mars, I think its quite handsome.
I take the cool wall quite seriously and I think before I act - and I don't choose an option just to get a reaction from other members, thus giving myself the exciting challange of trying to talk my way out of it.
My overall impression when I have seen one, and looked at these pictures is that its a cool car. I'd wager its pretty functional too. Functionality also doesn't come up for much with the cool wall, but when you think about who's buying them, families, I like stylish family cars. They're saying - "you may have a family, but that doesn't mean you have to drive something designed by an etch-a-sketch." The new Volvo V70 is included in this.

uncool
It has descent styling cues, and, and, and, and, and,uh,well, thats it.

Like I said, the cool wall is a joke since so many people don't bother to put any thought into it.

Whatever, I'm done with it and I'm sick of this. The cool wall is closed, or at least my running of it is closed.

Unfortunately... yes, not many people do... but I feel that enough of us that vote do put some thought into the proceedings that each thread has been at least passingly interesting, and many have been quite interesting... and some have been outrageously flame-worthy.

For that alone, I vote your "Cool Wall" experiment sub-zero. Thanks for all the fish... please stick around for the sushi. ;)

As to your objections... styling does play a huge part in a car's coolness... I think some people can be forgiven for voting a car sub-zero, no matter how utterly terrible it is, simply because of its looks.

On the other hand... a car that doesn't stir any emotional reaction in the viewer will have a hard time being cool. As HFS has said: the Superb may be an amazing value and a great car... but if it doesn't take your breath away as you walk up to it in the hotel driveway... as... say... an old Mercedes or a Jaguar might, it will never be cool.

You say that like it is an impressive number...

Mine is longer. :P

It's not a very big output, but it's actually very good for a 2 liter diesel.

Of course, again... Statistics, seriously uncool they are.

Design isn't great but it doesn't really catch your eye the way ugly cars do. That would render it cool.

But when you have to name a car "Superb", that gives the impression that you're compensating for something, like mechanical faults, or electrical problems. I'm not saying the car has mechanical or electrical problems but the it's the name that gives off that impression. Like showing up to a job interview for a job at the pawn shop in a tuxedo.

..and 41 MPG! Whoa!!! That doesn't blow my mind.

Superb...

...exactly what it isn't.

UNCOOL
