That's mid-'70s, emissions-choked American Cars for ya.

Yeah, it took some time for automakers to adjust to the wave of emissions and safety changes. Hence the dissappoiting numbers. But to me a Pacer is more to be seen in rather than raced...

However, Randall AMC of Mesa, Arizona offered a special conversion for the Pacer (as well as the Gremlin) that involved swapping out the stock engine for a 401 V8, complete with a cool appearance package. Not very many were made, but the performance increase was appreciable, to say the least!
