So if you read the stewards comments (which you always do right
), you'd know we had something extra kinky in mind for this combo. Well, we've had time to test it out and it got the stamp of approval. 👍
Special Track Rules
All Drivers are required to run the extra moto chicane pictured above, except as noted here:
- Each driver can skip the moto chicane once between laps 10 and 20.
- Each driver can skip the moto chicane once between laps 35 and 45.
- The driver skipping the chicane is responsible for a safe merge and will be penalized for any incident resulting from an unsafe merge.
- In case of a merge the driver skipping the chicane must stick to the inside (left) and leave enough room on the outside (right) for the driver exiting the moto chicane.
*Note that these lap numbers are going to be what's displayed in the race lobby (include the formation lap) so you can easily see on track whether you are in the window.
It's tough to pass on this track and this special rule will provide a couple opportunities in addition to the pit stop that's going to be required by the fuel consumption rate of "very fast". There is some intriguing strategy this introduces and should be a fun twist if our test session is any indication.
Please be aware that the driver skipping the chicane is responsible for a clean merge with drivers that take the chicane. They must stick to the inside line and allow enough room on the outside for the drivers exiting the chicane. Think of the driver skipping the chicane like a driver exiting pit road. They are responsible for any incidents occurring due to a merge so the onus is on them to make it safe.
We are waiting until lap 10 to open up this window to let the field spread out a bit naturally. This will be most dangerous when there are 4+ cars in a line which probably won't be the case by the time we get to lap 10.
Our testing showed that you gain about 2.5 seconds by skipping so if you are within a couple car lengths of the car in front of you there will be no problem merging and you'll end up a few car lengths ahead with no real chance for an incident during a merge. But if you are about 2.5-3.0 seconds behind another cars you will intersect at the exit of the chicane. In that case, the driver skipping will need to stick to the tight inside line (left) and leave enough room on the outside (right) for the driver who took the chicane. Visibility can be tough so be aware. Also note that the driver skipping the chicane will have more speed at this point, but even so dive bombing the brake zone will not be tolerated. We are introducing this to engineer a few passes on a track where it's difficult, not for a driver to jump a driver 4 seconds in front of them with an unsafe maneuver.
We'll be asking for participating drivers to assist in reviewing the replay after the race to make sure drivers stick to the cut limits.
Hope you enjoy this kink[y] twist!
