Thanks, so today's race is just two 9 lap races?
Our normal full length and "official" races are on Wednesdays. These Saturday events are just a follow up using the same combo (thus requires little extra prep for those that ran Wednesday) and are just for fun and completely unofficial. We don't track the results in our database.
We came up with the "attack format" to engineer some different types of finishes and mix it up versus just rerunning another identical hour long race which many of us have done twice on Wednesday already. The format includes two sprint races with reverse grid in the second sprint only we add the twist of creating gaps at the start of race 2.
I don't generally like reverse grid setups because it becomes a matter of who is the more aggressive driver in the back willing to take chances to get through the field. These gaps spread the field a bit and thus you have more one on one passing through the field. And sometimes the guy who finished last in race one is able to end up with a shootout with a faster driver that has come through the field and spent their stuff (worn tires)... which leads to some fun finishes.
A lot of good practice with clean one on one passing spread throughout the race and not a mad scramble in turn 1. Also a chance to race toe to toe with drivers for a few corners/laps at some point in the race that you might not otherwise.
Saying all that, these week will be a bit of a challenge because passing is quite difficult in this combo. So we'll reduce the gaps relative to last week. If you finish 30 secs ahead of a driver in race one you usually would start about 22 seconds behind him in race two (75% of gap), but on a track where passing is difficult we'll reduce that to 15 secs (50%).
If it all works out things tighten up lap by lap and there is a convergence in the final few laps of the race. But drivers always make mistakes so some guys fall back quicker than expected and some move forward and take advantage... We've seen guys who finished last in the first race win the 2nd race and we've seen guys win both. It all depends what shakes out on the track like always.
PS> When you add qualifying to those 2x 9 lap races it'll be an hour event. Also guys are often ready to run a few more races afterwards as well. All are always welcome to stay in the lounge for more fun if they want and there is interest.
