Welcome to the GTPLMS

Round 4: California Wineries Sonoma Grand Prix

Round 4
Track: Infineon Raceway Sports Car Course - 2.52 miles (4.06km)
Length: 20 laps - 50.4 miles (81.2km)
Deadline: Monday, June 18th @ 6p CST (GMT -6)

InfineonSportsTrackMap.jpg

Infineon Raceway, formerly known as Sears Point, takes center stage for Round 4 of the GTPLMS. This storied track is a tight course, with blind, off-camber turns, sweeping esses, and large elevation changes. The Sports Car Course challenges drivers further than the short course with the addition of 2 seperate hairpins and a long sweeping downhill left that leaves you white knuckled and begging for more.

IMPORTANT SERIES ANNOUNCEMENT

Competition Adjustments have been handed out for the race, and must be adhered to. In PRO, the Audi R8 was given a whopping 45kg weight penalty. GT1 has the Dodge Viper getting a 30kg, while the GT3 and the Subaru CUSCO Impreza has been hit with a 22kg penalty. GT2 has no clearly dominant car and therefore no penalties; although the Mazda RX7 LM will continue to be closely watched.

As a result of this, HP restrictions or additions have been scrapped this round, and the slate is wiped clean. All cars are now running at their original GTPLMS specs.

Cool!

I get on this in the morning! Too hot here to stay in bed, so i'll get my ass out of it and into the seat.
Temps still 25 degs C/high 70's F, and very humid. And it's 01:20.
And we don't have AC in this country.:grumpy:

Neil

Time for the rookie to make his first time.

Ran Mediums all race, made the gamble by doing so and making a extra pit stop, but I had really good pace. I could've gone a little bit faster had I not clipped the kerb coming out of 7a & 3a a cople of times. Infineon is probably one of the only tracks where the less kerb you take the faster track speed you obtain. But that's only on my driving style, don't know if that relates to anyone here.

Time submitted .. :P

Hello Guys. I'm gonna be able to start for the race as I will be leaving tomoow. Looks like I get to at least race at Sonoma. I've raced this course many times and have gotten better at my brake points and cornering. THe BMW Last year was barely manageable around here, but the R8 should be alot better as it seems easier to handle with the weight restrictions.

Congrats to everyone on pole position. I'll be looking forward to racing you guys(and girls) when I return to dallas.

I always liked Infineon, good rhythem, and it's VERY good on orange tires. the S2000 was a good time to drive...has about 15-20s left out there, but with SO much going on in RL this weekend, i think it's a 1 and done for me in each class...if i'm lucky.

c

Already done with the Viper! 2 stopper.

Working on the GT-One race now, just having to adjust to mis-matched tyres round such a twisty track. All the camber changes at the apexes are making it a handfull.

Back later.

Neil

well, I'm going to have my work cut out for me this week if I plan on doing this on a one stopper :( I'm about 1.5 laps short - the added weight isn't helping any :( ... thanks boss ! just kidding :) .... not sure if I'll have to make this a 2 stopper and just burn the skins off ... the clock will tell

I know what you mean JR!

The added weight to the Viper has turned it from an oversteery corner-muncher, into an under-steering sled.

From wearing the rears, it now enters the domain of the tyre-king by wearing the fronts harder.
So it's a bit of a double edged sword really, bad in one way, but good in the other.
Did the Viper race with RM/RM for the first stint, and then softs for the second and third.

Neil

"What the heck has happened to my car?"

I've returned to Sonoma to test for the race. I raised my garage door and see that my Corvette C5R has morphed into some wicked wild steroid-pumped insectoid monster.

Gone is that ugly yellow nausea sissy paint job.....yellow is for school buses and New York City cabs, not race cars. Now, my car is muscular with bulging wheel flares, simulated black carbon fiber paint everywhere, except the hood.

The hood is an air-brushed mural on a 'blue-sky with clouds' backdrop. The mural depicts a large silvery-grey Mongoose poised with a bloody twisted maimed snake hanging from its jaws. The head of the snake rests pierced between its needle sharp canines, and the body of the snake dangles limp with its soft light-colored underbody curved and mangled.

On the ground lay the hapless dead bodies of several other uneaten Vipers. They're uneaten because this Mongoose doesn't kill Vipers for food. Oh no, a far more primal urging motivates this instinctive behavior. The motive: ...it simply hates snakes, especially 'Vipers'!

For a moment, I'm awash in the fierce emotions and animal urgings depicted in the mural. The impact of this 'altered ego' C5R has sparked an insatiable raging fire in my soul that's beginning to burn hotter and hotter.

Without conscience thought and charged with adrenaline, I find myself in the cockpit....609 high-octane fed horses thunder to life with an ear shattering 120 decibel rumble. I back out and slowly lope this menacing blackened beast down pit lane to start practice.

I can feel driver's shocked wide eyes burning with wonder and envy as I roll by their pits and accelerate hard up the hill and out of sight. "Be afraid....be very afraid" is the warning thought that keeps repeating in my head.

"Time to race.":grumpy: :)

^^^ HAR! HAR!

Imagination is a wonderfull thing to behold!

Neil

"It is 'imagination' that fuels the fires of 'reality'".

And speaking of 'fires'.....My pit crew rushes to my pit box with fresh tires in response to the crackling of my voice on the radio:

"These front tires are toast, and the brakes are on fire! Our pit strategy ain't going to work on this understeering dog."

After just 5 laps, I see this is not going like we'd "imagined".

The "reality" is clearly apparent as the black Vette hauls to a stop in its pit box and grey smoke billows off the the front brakes and tires. This car wears out tires like a bratty overweight 12 year old with orthopedic problems.

The analogy is, we won't be doing this race in a nice sleek soft pair of Nike running shoes; we'll be marching in formation in a pair of hard soled combat boots.

The "reality" is, instead of crushing Viper's heads between our teeth, we maybe feeling their needle sharp pointy fangs injecting poisonous venom into our unprotected rearend.:yuck:

Gets into car .. turns radio off .. and does what he's supposed to do .. forgets about the paint job , forgets about whatever tyres are on the car , forgets about the opposition , forgets about whatever strategy the team wants , forgets about the 100+ girl {all blondes} fan club who are at the circuit ... just concentrates totally on the win 👍

Sweet and simple....👍

Well, I've tried two different tire strategies and both end up about the same. It looks like speed and consistency, every lap for 20 laps is going to be the only 'trick' that's going to matter for this Vette.

I'm going to hit the track early tomorrow and try to get a .750 average improvement per lap. I don't plan to stare at the ugly butt end of 4 Vipers for 20 laps.:yuck:

Easy for some :(

  Now THAT'S an active imagination for ya! Must be an Ausie thing, Casio's got the same affliction.

I spent all last evening trying to get a clean 20 laps in the GT-One, on medium fronts and hard rears. What a nightmare that is!
Well, actually, it's 8 laps for the first stint on RM/RH's, then RS/RM's for 6 laps x2. But you know what I mean.:banghead: :banghead:

Anyone else able to get the FULL Le Mans race coverage on Motors TV, like I can? :sly:

Neil

The pressure is gripping me as I fight to keep my early pace in the closing laps of this test run. With 3 more laps to go in what has been a solid run for the #46 Super Pro Racing C5R. So far, every lap other than pit sequence laps have been within a few tenths of each other. I'm hoping 'no fool' decides to take me out.

With one more turn to go, I see my pit crew at the wall with 'thumbs up' and seconds later, I cross the line for the final time. It's celebration time for the team when our overall time shows.....not just the 7 seconds improvement we'd hoped for, but a whopping 14 seconds fell from the previous best.

No trick pit stategies, no special tire formulas......just solid consistent driving made the difference. That not withstanding, we still believe the special black carbonfiber paint job and mural hexed the dreaded poisionous snakes. It's a case of "art 'intimidating' life".

The Vipers respectfully kept their distance behind us as hopefully they will when the final race results are posted.:sly: :)

Zero Le Mans coverage down here 👎 .. rainy weekend though 👎 = extra time at Infineon 👍 .. no snakes or pretend carbonfibre paint to distract me either ... though the trick pit strategy certainly took Dels attention .. he has an all girl pitt crew  { hand chosen from his 100+ blonde fan club } .. fully trained to :)

Try using RS/RM's for your 1st 6 laps .. 1. Gets you ahead of the opposition quicker than if you use RM/RH's .. 2.When joining the track after pitting on lap 6 .. you are still in the lead = no overtaking bunched cars = faster overall time .
Having said all that .. i haven't been out with Proto yet , though this strategy worked well with GT2 and GT3

For me, I had a two-stop strategy in use for my race in GT1. At first it was 8-8-4 with the frist two stints on a RH/RM tire combo, and a RM/RS setup for the last 4 laps. Then on a whim, I'd thought I'd try the 8-6-6 schedule. Guess I'm not the only one who gave that a try.:dopey:  As it turns out, it improved my total race time by about 8 seconds. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but I feel optimistic about a good result in this race. :D
Anyone else able to get the FULL Le Mans race coverage on Motors TV, like I can? :sly:
Well I live in the US, so I don't get Motors TV like you do Neil. Guess it's probably a European thing.:P But I do get the SPEED Channel, and they have the Le Mans race on right now with continous coverage until the finish of the race. The only times they left the race was for the USGP Practice and Qualifying at Indy and the NASCAR Nextel Cup practice and Craftsman Truck race from Michigan.

"Did you see him when he held the inside line and held Fernando off going into 'turn 1' on the start?"

"Yeah, I saw that."

"I was just hoping they wouldn't take each other out....Fernando can get pretty crazy on the start, you know."

"Yeah, I've seen that."

"Did you see him on lap 38 when Fernando was getting a good draft on him, but Lewis held the inside and out braked him going into 'turn 1'?" "From then on, he just slowly put some distance on Fernando until the finish....the kid doesn't make many mistakes."

"Yeah, I noticed that."

That's when I began to kick myself....why can't I be more like Lewis Hamilton.....that's all I do is makes mistakes. I've never seen a rookie in F1 like him. That kid is good. Why can't I be more like him?:guilty:
**************************************************************
Well, no improvement in my latest runs.....too many little mistakes. I suppose I'll open the Nissan 350Z garage and see what she'll do. If anybody beats my GT1 time.....I 'll just have to congradulate them, they would have earned it.

GT2 times submitted. I love this place, you can really hustle the car. RM/RM 7 laps, RM/RM 8 laps, RS/RS 5 laps.

Not managed to get any wheel time today, too much good motor-sport on the TV.👍 👍
Started with WSB super-stocks at 9 am:boggled: , then WSB super-bikes x2 and WSB super-sports. With Bits of 24hrs Le Mans in the breaks.
Then British superbikes x2 & British super-sports, then Live US GP (missing the final 12 laps but pretty much knowing the outcome)(not that I would dare to accuse the Grand Prix of ever being boring and predictable:sly: ).

Then the entire BSB race schedule, including the super-bikes/stocks/sports and Virgin media cup (Yam R6, all identical, no mods) plus the British 125 GP cup race.
And finally, a catch-up on the end of the GP (WELL DONE LH!👍 ), and the British Porche cup to finish off with.
That coverage finished 35 mins ago, @ 01:00

So, considering I also managed to prep/cook/eat a full roast dinner (with a couple of glasses of a nice red), and do the clearing up, and entertain my future best man (oh and the future mrs too, of course:nervous: ) Oh! And I had a bath too!:dopey:
I don't think the days been a complete write off!

Times sent.
Started with RM/RM tires that lasted 8 laps. Changed to RS/RS and managed to improve my pace significantly during 5 laps. Pitted again at the end of the 13th lap and changed to RM/RM again, that lasted until the end, starting to get orange on the last lap.
Guess I was faster with the first RM set, because I got used to the RS tires, but I'm happy with my final result, hoping to fight for the top positions. :scared: :)

 Neil bathed ! :sly:
Now I know for sure he's getting hitched :dopey:
I'm pissed that my dish network didn't carry the GP :grumpy:

Ran a one stopper this morning :) RM/RS - brought in rags :nervous:
may try a two stopper and see how that time holds

One and done for me. Both PRO & GT1. One of these weeks I'm just going to take a break from work and practice racing all week. :D Too bad because I really do like this course. Times sent.

Times sent in. Time for some summaries of my runs.

GT3: Ran 2 stop race with a RH/RM for both stints. It was pretty much a smooth race with few problems. I raced in this class first so that I could get a feel for how to drive this course.;)

GT2: Did a 2-stopper for this race as well starting with a RH/RH setup. I was coming up on the pit entrance on Lap 10 and saw that the tires were yellow in the front and greenish yellow in the rear, so I though I could stay out a lap or two more. Lap 11: bright orange/yellow. Lap 12: all orange except for a yellow left-rear. Guess I better take it to the pits and chance it on a RM/RM setup. By time I left the pits the Viper passed me. But I was able to pass him again in almost 2 laps. It was pretty much smooth sailing for the rest of the race and I set my Fastest Lap on Lap 17.

GT1: This one was a 3-stopper starting with RH/RM tires. 'Power is nothing without control' indeed! Slipped off the course in 2 on the first lap! I was able to quickly recover, but there was a 4 car traffic jam by time I got to turn 11 at the end of the lap!:ill: I carefully weaved through the pack and was behind the Viper by the middle of Lap 2 and passed him soon after. Rest of the first stint was basically distancing myself from the field before pitting on Lap 8 for RM/RS tires. I was hoping to get 6 laps out of this set, and I did as the fronts turned dark orange. Only thing that went wrong for me before the end of the race was that I drifted off the course on Lap 18 and nearly became one with the hillside.:yuck: Guess my mind wasn't the only thing that was drifting off at the time...

Anyways, here's hoping I get some good results for this ronud as well. ;)

I unfortunatly won't be able to participate in this race. My brake pedal on the GTDriving Force pro gets stuck. Its unfortunate, I was able to lap sub 1'16 laps very consistantly with the Pescarolo but I kept restarting because I would keep wrecking and then one day the brake pedal broke so put me down as mechanical failure...
