Jagermeister is the devils drink. I remember having a shot of it on holiday alongside another shot of Absinthe. Absolute filth and it's the only time I've ever had a real gag reflex.

I usually drink Fosters superchilled or Carling when watching football down the pub. Duvel normally on a night out and then I move onto Brandy and lemonade.

No, no, no ,no ,no ,no and no

Ice murders good whisky, drink it neat.

On the subject, my favourite single malt would be... (Laphroaig)

...wonderful stuff with a massively smoky after-taste.

I'm a big whisky fan too 👍 - I've had a couple of bottles of Laphroaig in the past, which i like, but is a bit of an aquired taste - even for a single malt fan like me.

My favourite whisky, so far, is the wonderful Cardhu:

It's becoming fairly hard to get hold of in the UK these days - which is odd since every little Spar supermarket in France stocks it :odd:

As far as liquors go, IMO you can't do better than a nice shot of ice-cold Limoncella - great for cleaning the pallet (smells like it would be great for cleaning the oven or drains)

Cardhu is great. My wife gets a bottle as a gift from one of her distributors every Christmas... needless to say, I welcome Santa with a huge, drunken gring. I drink it on the rocks, though.

There's a nice Italian restaurant around here, and at the end of a copious meal they give you a bottle of Limoncello. I asked about it, and it turns out it's home made. They get like 1 kilo of lemons, and put them in a vat with a bottle of pure alcohol (100%) and let it sit for about six months. Then they frappe the remaining paste and there you go. It's almost frozen when they give it to you... and after 3 shots you're unfit to walk. The taste is great, though.

Anyone ever try the alcoholized Rockstar? It's called Rockstar 21 in the USA and Rockstar + Vodka in Canada.

I had a couple cans earlier in the summer, and there is literally no taste of alcohol anywhere, not to mention it costs 5 cents cheaper than the regular Rockstar.

Okay, finally I get to ask my question.

What the heck is a martini?

I know they're colorful, which probably means guys aren't allowed to drink them. Even the name sounds feminine. Thoughts?

Also, the other day I had a girl give me a Smirnoff Ice. It was all there was, and I was thirsty, so I told her the gist. She handed me the drink and thought "Ahh, now I can drink this thing without looking like a pansy."

A classic martini is 5 to 1 gin and dry white vermouth. Served straight in a chilled cocktail glass, usually with a olive or lemon peel. These days, it's common to sub vodka for the gin, which is how I like mine. A classic martini has no color and is not pansy at all. When prepared and served properly, its a cold, crisp and very smooth drink.

The Bond martini (the Vesper) is 3 parts gin, 1 part vodka and half part Kina Lillet. Never had it mixed that way, but it sounds tasty.

The colorful ones you see all the wimmen drinking these days are 'specialty' martinis. They are usually very sweet, fruity and really no different than a typical mixer in a fancy glass, IMO.

If I'm out with the wife, who likes Cosmopolitans (too much Sex in the City ) and feel a little color challenged, I usually try to get the bar to mix me a 'Blue Sky', which is a Sky vodka martini with blue curacao, blueberry schnapps and a twist of lemon.

Good stuff 👍

I'm a Macallan man, myself, though.

They can be decievingly potent, but if you have one it really needs to be frozen for the proper effect.

I used to enjoy a nice single malt on the rocks, in a tall glass, topped off with a quality ginger ale. But i decided that it's a waste of a good whisky. I still enjoy a glass after a hard day at work, only now i keep a bottle of blended in for such occasions.

I wonder if you could make a 'lime'n'cello'?

Daiquiris are too sweet for my taste.

The frozen ones bars here in the states sometimes serve taste like Coolaid and cheap rum. :yuck: Those are definately chick drinks.

If I feel like something sweet and want to get drunk without actually tasting any alcohol, I'd go with a Coke and rum (any kind, its not like you'd taste it over the Coke) or a Long Island. But it's been years since I've drank liquor just to get drunk.

What's everyone's opinion on Daiquiris?

Chick drink, or wolf in sheep's clothing?
Chick drink. Why you'd order a daiquiri when you could have a good marguerita instead, I'll never understand. You wanna talk "wolf in sheep's clothing"? I can drink tequila with lime and salt like it's water... for a while.

Jagermeister tastes like Cough Syrup Schnapps. I can't see why anyone would drink it, ever. :yuck:

Not a big fan of daquiris either, and you'd get some funny looks if you ordered one anywhere around here :odd: - however I don't mind Jagermeister, but then again, I like Benylin :ill:

Daquiris are good with a nice late-afternoon dinner on the terrace under the sun. Other than that, I have no need to drink them at all.

What's people's opinions on premium vodkas over the cheaper stuff? Can you taste the difference between a drink made with Popov over one made with Ketel One?

Vodka is EVIL period... I avoid it.

Shirley you cannot be serious!
I am often fuelled by vodka.

Smirnoff and Absolut are nice, but Blackwood is really out of this world.

maybe because daiquiris are made with rum, and margaritas are made with tequila?

I don't drink either. Rum doesn't like my stomach and I once had a heavy episode with tequila and ever since I can't even smell it. I've always had an issue with it, as I repeat it often... (repeat: spanish slang for when you eat something and every burp you have for the following day tastes like it).

When I was a kid, we could order non-alcoholic daiquiris... then again, I lived in a tropical country, so anything with rum was pretty common.

I don't think it's that hard. According to the guys at the restaurants it's pretty easy. You just have to buy a litre of pure alcohol at 100% (for human consumption), 2 litres of water, concentrated lemon and sugar... they didn't say how long it's supposed to ferment, but again, I'm sure the result will be pretty heavy.

oh, 'lime'n'cello'... now I get it. :dunce:

According to my uncle (who drinks about a bottle of Absolut every week), you might taste the difference, but you really feel the difference the next day. Cheap vodka will give you an impressive hangover, while the good stuff will make you feel nice.

Personally, I prefer good vodka, since it's not as dry as the cheap ones.

@ Diego - Tequila has that, erm, 'quality'... it can't be a coincidence that so many people, me included, can't stand even the smell of it now... a few other drinks do that to me, Southern Comfort being the other most famous one... for some odd reason, the smell of either SoCo or Tequila turns me over - but I can still drink it in an emergency :P Some malts, even really good ones, I find I have to be in the mood for, otherwise it's a complete no-go... Conversely, some drinks which should have been banished from my 'Forbidden Drinks Cabinet of Mystery' have somehow escaped punishment, like Jack Daniel's for example...

Wyborowa Esquisite

wyborowa.jpg

The nicest vodka i have sampled. A friend of mine works for a advertising agency who deal with wyborowa and often gets a bottle of this sent to him. Not being a vodka fan the kind lad gives it to me to enjoy. Ive never seen it in the shops and a little research found out why

Wyborowa
The Wyborowa Exquisite concept originated from the 18th century when vodka was distilled at country houses and monasteries. The gentry and monastic orders actually competed with each other to produce the finest quality vodka. At this time distilling vodka also symbolised the achievements of Polish science.
True to that tradition Wyborowa Exquisite now represents one of the greatest achievements in vodka making. Based on a unique recipe it is produced at a single distillery in Turew, which ensures consistent quality and character. The entire production process, which includes small-bath distillation, is supervised be Master Distiller's team on the estate.

at around 40 GBP per bottle i feel pretty lucky to have had 3 bottles of the stuff for free!

i think both TM and Spec should be taken as experts in this thread.... Why i hear you ask?

please note the variety of shaped and size glasses....

for me it has to be Malibu and pineapple juice mmmm
gin is the work of evil and leads to foolishness and embarrassment :scared:

It depends which brands I'm comparing, but I can usually spot the difference if I have it in something fairly straight, like a vodka tonic or a dry martini. It's harder to tell some of the premium brands apart unless I'm drinking them totally straight, though.

If a I order a vodka tonic with Grey Goose, then turn around and order one with a typical 'house' vodka like Smirnoff, I can tell. But if you give me a Grey Goose and a Belvedere side by side and ask me to identify which is which, I don't think I could do it. (even though I've had copious amounts of both)

One exception is Absolut, which has a fairly distinctive taste, I can always tell it from anything else.

Dude, is that Vodka or perfume?

That pic is awesome... I knew it was a good idea to put all those glasses together... even daan's spilled cider glass is there! I think I have a better quality version of it.

My borther in law drinks Malibu all the time. It smells like freakin' Coppertone! I have about 4 bottles of it, since he buy one every time he comes to visit.

I'd have to say gin... again. It's usually my cheap-but-available drink.

oh, so that's why my bum hurt the following morning? :embarrassed:

Anyway, ever noticed how drunk people tend to close their eyes whenever you take a pic of them?

Oh my... Nick (Smallhorses) doesn't look too good either

So what's everyone's down-in-the-dumps-my-girlfriend/wife-just-left-me-I'm-looking-to-get-s&*^faced-drink?

I know I can't ever finish a 40oz of vodka in one night without getting some serious poisoning, so I think I would grab a 40 of vodka and see how far down it can go before I forget. That's probably the best and easiest way.

For serious drinking, I like a good blended like whiskey like Johnnie Walker Black myself. I tried attacking a bottle of Jack some time ago and couldn't stomach more than a third of it before it started turning my stomach. Johnnie, I can drink and enjoy pretty much till I pass out.

Any sake fans in the house?

Johnnie Walker. My grandfather liked it with ice, he let me have some when I was 21 (beer is crap compared to this, kid)...and to enjoy it slowly. It makes me feel like the world is right again, and I get nostalgic about the good times. Actually, I like it when I'm feeling good, too. Red or Black Label, I can't really justify the cost Blue Label stuff. Too expensive to order from a bar, home and friend's home use only! It also gives me terrible breath.

Sake is also a great temporary eraser of life's problems. Gekkeikan isn't half bad at room temperature, since most other brands I've tried require a warming up for best taste. Stove + Had a Few = Bad situation.

Long Islands ftw!
Great for ordering a strong drink when going out to eat or the rare times I go to a bar. I refuse to learn how make my own, for fear of becoming a drunknard. I'll have a Kamikaze if my wife and I are drinking, it's the only thing she'll drink other than an occasional glass of wine.

Otherwise, I'm fairly uncultured in the world of mixed drinks.
